Candidates for the 2023 City-School Election
Cherokee County has several seats up for the City-School Election on November 7, 2023. Nominations for open seats can be filed between August 28 and September 21. See all key dates and deadlines at www.sos.iowa.gov. All nominations must be turned into the respective School Central Office or City Hall.
Nomination papers for mayor and city council seats are available at City Hall and at the County Auditor’s Office. City candidates must obtain signatures of qualified electors who reside within city limits (always recommended to get more than required):
• Aurelia – 10 signatures required
• Cherokee – 25 signatures required (For offices that are elected by ward, signers must live within ward.)
• Cleghorn – 10 signatures required
• Larrabee – 10 signatures required
• Marcus – 10 signatures required
• Meriden – 10 signatures required
• Quimby – 10 signatures required
• Washta – 10 signatures required
Current City seats up for election:
- Aurelia – Mayor (two-year term), 2 Council Members at Large
- Cherokee – Ward 1 Council Member, Ward 3 Council Member, 1 Council Member at Large, 1 Council Member at Large to fill a vacancy (two-year term)
- Cleghorn – Mayor, 3 Council Members at Large
- Larrabee – 2 Council Members at Large
- Marcus – Mayor (two-year term), 3 Council Members at Large
- Meriden – Mayor (two-year term), 2 Council Members at Large, 1 Council Member at Large to fill a vacancy (two-year term)
- Quimby – Mayor (two-year term), 2 Council Members at Large
- Washta – Mayor (two-year term), 2 Council Members at Large
All city positions are elected for four-year terms, unless otherwise noted above, with elections taking place in odd-numbered years.
Nomination papers for school board seats are available at the School’s Central Office and at the County Auditor’s Office. School board candidates must obtain signatures of qualified electors who reside within the school district (always recommended to get more than required): - Cherokee Community School District – 43 signatures required
- Marcus Meriden Cleghorn Community School District – 20 signatures required

- Marcus Meriden Cleghorn Community School District – 3 Director at Large Seats
All school board members are elected for four-year terms, with elections taking place in odd-numbered years.
