Naomi Niemann, Agnes Garvin, Luella Toomey and Nellie Bird were graduated from Holy Name school June 4.
Pearl Sims was graduated from the home economics department of Iowa State College at Ames last week.
Marie Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Miller, and Nels Pallesen were married in Sioux City last week.
Mr. and Mrs. E. Turner and Gladys and Florence left Sunday evening to make their home at Minneapolis.
Mrs. Margaret Wirt entertained at a farewell party in honor of her son, Joseph, who is leaving for the Army.
In the primary election Monday John W. Stevens defeated James Payton for county recorder and Low McDonald won over W. P. McCulla for county attorney.
100 Years Ago – 1923
The new Farmer’s Co-op Elevator at Cleghorn will be ready for business soon. The present office building will be moved to its new site, nearer to the elevator.
Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Dempsey are the parents of a 7 lb. Daughter, Helen Katherine, born Thursday, June 7.
The Kay Theatre here will show the movie “Thelma”. Starring Jane Novak on Wednesday and Thursday.
Everett Dorr went to Iowa City to have a final examination of his back taken at the hospital there.
Specials this week at the Mich & Kass store are canned dates, 8¢ per package, Baker’s chocolate, 23¢ per can, bulk oatmeal, 4¢ per pound.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wendt have moved into a fine bungalow in the east part of town which they recently purchased.
Minnie Fry, former Marcus high school principal, became the bride of Dr. Robert McBride of Iowa City.
Fred Kirchoff and Mrs. Louise Bierman were married Friday, leaving afterwards on a fishing trip to Brown’s Lake.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Beck are the parents of a son born Tuesday, June 5th.
Arthur Evans, who is in the clothing business at Schaller, was united in marriage to Ruth Bruning of Cedar Rapids.
The barn and garage of the Lutheran parsonage at Germantown was destroyed by fire. Damage was assessed at $300.
Mrs. Josie Erickson passed away Wednesday morning in the home of her daughter at Boone following a paralytic stroke.

Buddy Jenkins broke his arm while riding a pony Tuesday.
Esther Specht and Albert Nielsen were united in marriage June 2 in Trinity Lutheran Church.
A lovely June wedding united Bernita Dorr and Richard Drefke at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mildred Alesch became the bride of Joseph Delaney in Holy Name Church June 7.
Anders John Peterson, 91, passed away Saturday morning leaving his wife and four children to survive.
Pearl Heinis and Otto Frangenburg were married in a ceremony Monday morning in Holy Name church.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Delaney and family left last week for Polson, Mont., to make their future home.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Elmer Bjornstad 82/c is on duty in the Atlantic. He was the music instructor at Marcus High.
Roger Leavitt spent last week buying lumber in northern Minnesota. Sons, Roger and John, and Tom Olson and Herb Stowater accompanied him, and they enjoyed the week fishing north of Brainerd, MN.
Eddie Dean Frangenberg celebrated his birthday Sunday and his parents, Otto and Pearl, observed their 5th wedding anniversary the same day.
John Melrose of Battle Creek has been hired to direct the city band during the summer.
Edgar Hagey, HAEC, Pvt. Robert Hagey, Cpl. Frank Norris, Cpl. Orville Chum and Pvt. Leland Hogue are home this week on furloughs.
June Carey was honored at a 14th birthday party Sunday evening in the municipal hall.
Don’t forget that ration stamp No. 17 will expire June 15.
75 Years Ago -1948
Mary Jo Barnes resigned her position as clerk in the Ckarkson Grocery as she is getting married June 20. Bonnie Meylor replaced her for the summer.
The body of John Keegan, USMC arrived in Marcus Saturday evening. He was killed March 2, 1945 in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Funeral services will be held in Holy Name Monday morning with burial at Fairbanks, Iowa.
Frank Norris and Fred L. Mossman, both of Marcus, graduated Tuesday from the University of St. Louis, Missouri. Each received a BS in Commerce.
70 Years Ago -1953
Pvt. John R. Bird departed for Camp Stoneman , Ca. after spending. a leave in the parental Leo Bird home. He will be going to Korea.
Dr. and Mrs. D. E. Haines are the parents of a daughter, Jean Mary, born Tuesday, June 9.
Pvt. James F. Meehan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Meehan, is nearing completion of a 16-week training cycle at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., with a unit of the 6th Armored Division.

Eunice Dorr of Marcus and Joseph Tschampl of Sioux City were married Saturday, June 14th at Sioux City.
Friends and family helped Kathy Brownmiller celebrate her 10th birthday Tuesday, June 10th in the parental Cy Brownmiller home.
Open house will be held at J & D Cafe here this Friday, the attraction being free coffee to patrons. John Anderson recently purchased the business from Herman Lage.
The Golden Slipper tavern in Marcus has been enlarged by moving the west partition back. Lovell Roberson is the operator of the business.

Mrs. Ed Meehan, nee Judith Laws, received her nursing degree from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing at Sioux City.
The Class of 1938 of Cleghorn High School held their 25th reunion in the Collonade Room at the Lewis Hotel in Cherokee, Saturday evening. All but two of the graduates were present.
Linda Thorell of Holdrege, NE and Berdene Shefstad of Marcus are planning an August wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Olson are the parents of a daughter born June 9. She has four brothers and one sister.
Mr. and Mrs. Roger E. Leavitt are parents of a daughter, Kathy Sue, born June 8.
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Rupp of Omaha, Nebr., are parents of a daughter born June 10. She has been named Rae Ann

Mr. and Mrs. Dick Garvin of Marcus are the parents of an 8 lb. 12 oz. daughter, Karen Marie, born Wednesday, June 5th. She has 2 sisters and 2 brothers at home.
Chuck Addy spent several days in Marcus before leaving for Denver, Co. where he will be employed for the summer.
Specials at Mighty Mite IGA include a quart of salad dressing-29¢, a head of lettuce- 10¢, sirloin steak-99¢ a lb., and 3 lb. can of Hills Bros. Coffee-$ 1.99.
Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus was the scene June 1 for the lovely evening ceremony with Pastor Calvin Rossman uniting in marriage Julie Benson and Lu Verne Halstrom both of Meriden.

Joyce Peavey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Peavey of Marcus, graduated June 7th as a registered nurse from the Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines.
Janice Grauer of Marcus and Thomas Irwin of Washta were married May 20th at Trinity Lutheran Church, south of Marcus. They will be at home in Spencer where both are employed.
Eugene R. Miller returned to Madison, Wisc. after spending ten days in the parental Oliver Miller home at Cleghorn.
Fourteen-year-old Beth Mugge, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Mugge of CI’eghorn, departed June 14 to spend two months in Germany as a participant in the International Cultural Exchange program.
Mr. and Mrs. George J. Hueser celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on June 21.

RocheIl A. Specht, Kathleen. I. Dunn and Mary J. Bird, all of Marcus received perfect 4.0 grade averages for the second semester of the 1977-78 academic year at Morningside.
The Cherokee Community Theater is holding auditions for their coming production, The Sound of Music”. Age range is 5-60. Production dates are July 27-20.

Laurie Kruse of Sturgis, S.D. and Dean Behrens of rural Meriden were married May 15th at Sturgis, They will make their home at Tyler, TX where he is employed.
Rick J. Sand of Granville graduated from Wentworth Military Academy, Lexington, MO. as a 2nd Lt. on May 22.
Dinah Bindner received first place in the adult division of the Lions Club Contest, “Marcus, Iowa – Home to Me”. Aaron Schnoes placed first in his age group and David Erickson, first in his group.

Diane Wilkens of Marcus and James Sumner of Watertown, S.D. are planning an August 6th wedding at Watertown.
Tim Mason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Mason of Meriden, was one of 52 ministers ordained Sunday at the Iowa United Methodist Annual Conference at Ames. He will be the minister at the Akron Wesley United Methodist Church.
Kathy Reekers of Hospers and Lance Ehmcke of Cleghorn are planning a Saturday, September 3rd wedding at Sioux City. Both are employed in Sioux City.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Alice M. Curry,89, of Marcus, nec Alice Thiel, died Sunday, June 13. Services were held in Holy Name Church with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include two sons
Freddie Hoover was awarded a certificate by the Jefferson Award Committee for all the nice and generous ways he helps people.
Br. David Fitzgerald, C.S.C. of San Antonio, TX and his mother, Eileen Fitzgerald, of Marcus, spent last week in the Ann and Mike Lichty home at Plymouth, MN They attended the graduation of Suzanne Lichty from Wayzata High School.

Dr. Bruce John Tabke joined the Marcus Veterinary Clinic here.
Shiuvaunne Booth, MMC graduate, closed out her high school golfing career with a runner-up silver medal at the Iowa State Golf Championship. She returned home and pitched the MMC softball team to a 9-6 win over the West Sioux Falcons,
