100 Years Ago – 1923
Marjorie Mossman won the girls’ 50 yard dash and William Woodall won individual honors for high points with 21 counters to his credit at the junior track meet of Marcus High School.
Edwin Benson was on the Sioux City market May 25 with two loads of Herefords, which he sold at $10.25 a hundred-weight, topping the day’s market.
Harry Grauer arrived a few days ago from Los Angeles, Calif., for a visit with Marcus relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ohlendorf entertained relatives at Sunday dinner in honor of their little daughter Merlyn’s birthday.
John Lawneszak has purchased a new Overland car.
The park boosters have recently started to make the park a reality in’ Marcus, and work should be completed on it this week.
95 Years Ago -1928
Judge Parsons of Des Moines delivered the Memorial Day address.
Fifteen members of the senior class were graduated from Grand Meadow High School May 24.
James Rae is now distributor for the Maytag washer and will begin an active selling campaign.
C.H. Grimes, owner of the well known sand lake at the edge of LeMars, is making preparations for opening his resort for the summer season.
Arrangements are being made for the county Farm Bureau picnic which will be held June 7 at the park in Cherokee.
85 Years Ago -1938

The Honor Roll Board on the north side of the Marcus Municipal Building is nearly completed. It is in red, white and blue with the servicemen’s names in black.
Maxine Poison, Betty Evans and Joyce Woodall of Sioux City spent the weekend in the homes of their parents.
Velma Cook and Gertrude Hazen went to Washington, D.C. to accept jobs with the FBI. They returned home as they could not fined living accommodations.
Home this week on furloughs are Lt. Francis R. Brady, Pfc. Emory Brandt, Sgt. Ben Radcliffe and Pfc. Charles Bindner.
75 Years Ago -1948
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Grauer have bought the Mayme Peavey home on the west edge of Marcus and will move to town later. Mrs. Peavey purchased the Ralph Slagter home in southwest Marcus.
Loren and Leo Kauffman and Arnold Carlson enjoyed a weekend fishing trip to Round Lake. They returned home with 6 fish.
Mrs. Mayme Peavey has purchased the Ralph Slagter home in southwest Marcus and will move in soon. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Grauer have bought Mrs. Peavey’s home on the west edge of Marcus and plan to move to town later.
70 Years Ago -1953
Madeline Dalton of Cleghorn has opened a new business in Marcus. the Kid’s Korner, on the Nagle lot west of the Marland Theatre. They will serve ice cream, sandwiches and soft drinks. Sherry Dalton and Darlene Froelich are employed there.
The name “Marland” was chosen from a large number of suggestions entered in the contest to name the new Marcus Theatre. Winner of the contest was Wilfred Gill.
65 Years Ago -1958
Mr. and Mrs. Elmore Chase and family and Irving, Chase of Meriden spent the weekend fishing at Lost Island.
Darlene Eldrcdge of Marcus and Peter Tesch were married Thursday, May 27 in the Little Brown Church at Nashua.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Simons honored their daughter. Beverly, on her graduation from Marcus High with a gathering of relatives and friends at their farm home following the commencement exercises.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bunkers announce the arrival of a son, born Sunday, June 1. He has been named Jeffrey.
60 Years Ago -1963
Mrs. Walter Barnes, 92, nec Lora Houston, died Tuesday. June 4th after a long illness. Survivors include a son, Wayne and a daughter, Mrs. Blanche Pitts. Funeral services were held in Grace United Methodist Church with burial in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery.
Sp/4 Gene Cargin and Pfc. Terry Cargin, both of the U.S. Army, spent time in the parental Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cargin home at Cleghorn.
M.W. McCoy will hold a public auction of their Marcus home and household furnishings at 200 South Elm on Saturday, June 15. They are moving to Gulfport, Miss.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Spieler will observe their silver wedding anniversary June 16. An open house will be held at the V.F.W. Hall in Remsen.
Mr. and Mrs. John Reimers entertained about 50 relatives and friends in their home May 21 following commencement exercises at the Meriden Cleghorn Community School, honoring their daughter, Diane, a member of the class.
55 Years Ago -1968
Mr. and Mrs. Don Briggs and family have moved from New Hampton to the farm recently vacated by the Dave Nelsons.
Linda Brady of Marcus and Tom Christensen of Granville were united in marriage May 11th, in Holy Name Church at Marcus. They are at home at Vermillion, S.D
Gary Sanow, Marcus speedster, holds almost every 220 yard dash record in northwest Iowa. In addition, he holds numerous records in the 100 and 440 yard dashes and the long jump. He also holds a total of 23 meet records, plus all individual Marcus school dash record.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Rae of rural Marcus have received word that their son, Michael, has been wounded in Vietnam. He was struck by shrapnel on the inner thigh on May 19, and is in a hospital at Danang.
50 Years Ago -1973
Douglas Goodburn of Cleghorn graduated from Iowa State University May 26 with a B.S. degree in animal science. He will be employed by Mid-Continent Insurance Company of Des Moines.
Jalaine Marie Specht of Marcus and Dean Vavricek of Schuyler, NE. are planning a July wedding at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church at Schuyler. She teaches grade school there and he is in farming.
Marvin Hesse has announced the purchase of Nagle Chevrolet effective June 1. Mary was the Buick dealer in Cherokee for a number of years prior to his purchase of the Chevrolet franchise.
Marilyn Goodburn, June 3 bride-elect of Steve Fassler, was honored with two bridal courtesies both held at the Meriden Community Building.
Holy Name Catholic Church was the setting on May 19 for the wedding of Joyce Alesch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Alesch, and Larry Keffeler, son of Mrs. Armella Keffeler.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Flanagan and Lynn attended Gary Flanagan’s graduation in the Commercial Art Course from Des Moines Area Community College at Ankeny. Gary has accepted a position with the Idea Press at Perry.
Jill Ducommun of Cleghorn and Robert Thomson Jr. of Sioux Falls were married June 10 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Cherokee.
40 Years Ago –1983
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sand of Granville are the parents of a 7 lb. 4 oz. daughter, named Cassandra Marie, born June 5th. She has a sister and 3 brothers
Selmer T. Straub,59, son of Mrs. Victor Straub and the late Victor, died Sunday, May 29. Survivors are his mother and a sister. Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery at Germantown.
Michael J. Earnest of Sioux Falls, S.D. will be the director of the Nelson-Earnest Funeral home in Marcus. He, his wife, Vicki, and children Lisa and John will be moving here soon.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Harold and Rita Donaldson of Cleghorn celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, June 11, in the Cleghorn schoolhouse with an open house. Their children hosted the event.
Mr. and Mrs. Brian Brinig of San Diego, Ca. announce the birth of their 8 lb. 5 oz. son, named Kevin James, born May 5th. He has a 17 month old brother, Brendan. Mrs. Brinig is remembered as Rosemary Whealon.
30 Years Ago – 1993
John and Doris Fry will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house Saturday evening, June 19, in the Marcus Community Center, hosted by their children.
The Board of Directors of Heartland Care Center have accepted the bid for the general contractor by the Carl A. Nelson and Company of Burlington, Iowa for $1,573,493. They will be working in conjunction with Ebert Construction.
Mrs. Floy Johnson was honored at a retirement party, May 26, for 45 years of continuous and faithful service on the Marcus Library Board.

The new ambulance fund in Marcus has reached $23,125. the Marcus Fire Department appreciates all donations to help them better serve us.
