Personal Mention
Thursday doesn’t seem to be a good day as far as the last two weeks are concerned. Two weeks ago, school was let out early because of high winds on that Thursday and this past Thursday, there were 28 schools that were two hours late because of snow that had come in after midnight into Thursday morning.
I had seen it was snowing when I went upstairs about midnight, but at 1:15 a.m, Steve called me. My first thought was that he was stuck someplace delivering papers. No, he called to say he had looked outside and saw it was snowing. I told him it had been snowing for awhile!
There was a School board meeting on this past Monday night. Salary raises were given but not as much as asked for. I saw in last weeks’ Marcus News that years ago, the teachers got a raise. That probably was good at that time but a mere laugh if given now. There was one year when Floyd was working for the Co-op that he got a penny an hour raise! Of course someone sitting at a desk thought that was a great raise (as long as it wasn’t that person!)
Well, my dryer is sitting in the kitchen but at least it didn’t go to the garage where it would never get worked on. One more part is supposed to be coming. I really don’t know if the person working on this really knows what the problem is. For the time being, I do have a borrowed dryer, so at least I don’t have to go out of town. However, I am looking forward to packing up all the clothes that was cleaned and not being used any more, and taking all to somewhere where someone can make use of them. At least two rooms in the house wouldn’t look like a consignment shop for clothes!
Zachary prepared some ribs on the grill Saturday night. The night before, he had put some “seasoning” on them and put them in the refrigerator. When I opened up the door, the smell was terrible! I don’t know why the two in the household have to have everything so “strong” tasting. I declare that they both have lost their sense of taste and smell as well as thinking something is hot when it really is only lukewarm. I am forever heating something up and trying to avoid something that is as strong tasting as it smells.
Steve and I went to the MMCRU Middle School play at Remsen on Friday night. I was glad to see so many people there. It is good for these kids to be able to get up in front of people before they get to high school. The play was about a ghost telling tales of what goes on in a haunted mansion. It was amazing how many kids were involved in it as actors/working on stage set-up/sound effects (which were good!)
We had gone early in order to get a good parking place. While sitting in the auditorium, there was a boy wearing head phones sitting beside a man with a younger girl on the other side of the man. We were two rows behind them. Soon, the boy poked his Dad and said that Steve, sitting behind, was the person that watched him at school. He introduced Steve to his Dad and sister. So, Steve got to see the rest of the family.
I did an article on Sherree Ogren and hope it gets in as her birthday is this Wednesday, March 29. She really has been an asset to our town. I hope she receives many cards. I don’t regret having cards sent to my sister as she really enjoyed looking at them frequently. I remember my grandmother and her cards. She would have (if it was birthday cards) those cards set up on a table for anyone to see until the next bunch (maybe Christmas cards) came. Sometimes it takes so little to make someone happy!
I remember one night at a City Council meeting when Sherree was a Council member and she answered as I had never heard her before! There were some people a block or so away from me that (I really don’t know what they did except take pallets apart) we could hear all over the neighborhood. Their language would have curled any fuzz on a bald man’s head! It was a wet spring and they had two vehicles on their property that were sunk in mud and hadn’t moved for a long time. At this Council meeting, someone asked Sherree (who was on the nuisance committee) if she had seen this mess. Yes, she had. Then she was asked, “Are the tires on these vehicles flat?” (If they would have been flat, then there probably was an ordinance that would have said they would have to be gone.) She answered, “How would I know? I wasn’t going to go through mud to check this out!” Nothing more was said after that!
It doesn’t seem like it should be Palm Sunday next Sunday and then Easter Sunday. Lent has passed quickly. Our Jean Marie was born on Palm Sunday that was April 8 that year (1962). We got to the hospital just before an expected blizzard came. When we left the hospital 5 days later, we got home just before another one hit. Up to that time, there really hadn’t been much snow.
A reminder that next Sunday, April 2 there will be an Easter Egg Hunt at Heartland Care Center starting at 1 p.m. Bring your baskets, sacks, or whatever to collect the eggs!
Remember in your thoughts and prayers those who have lost friends/family to death, have had their lives changed, have health problems some of which are terminal, are struggling to make ends meet even though they have a job, help those who desire “wants” rather than “needs” that prestige isn’t everything and be with those who are still trying to shorten the distance between family/friends to build a bridge instead of a wall. Count your blessings.
I will close with this quote from Orison Swett Marden (1850-1924): “A will finds a way.”
