130 Years Ago -1893
John Ernster has sold a half interest in his shoe and clothing store to a Mr. Cooney of Anthon, Mr. Cooney and his family are at home in the Nokes house.
C.W. Cisne and George Prunty were chosen as directors at the recent school election, replacing John Knox and John Straw.
C.E. Morgeson has purchased the interest of his partner in the Giant Clothing House of this city. He will continue the business.
125 Years Ago -1898
Mrs. Charles E. Ames, nee Caroline Townsend, passed away in her Marcus home February 24. She is survived by a son, Arthur, and a daughter, Helen.
F.S. Barnes was chosen to fill the office of treasurer of the Independent School District of Marcus. Dr. Fry received the most votes for the director position open.
120 Years Ago -1903
The public school entertainment in the Opera House netted $67.75. It was delightful and the public looks forward to more.
Louis N. Bourke (Burke/Bork), 36, passed away suddenly of pneumonia on Monday morning. He is survived by his widow, seven young children, and one unborn. He was born in Denmark, came to America in 1887 and has made Marcus his home since 1889.
115 Years Ago – 1908
Mr. and Mrs. John Lyon, parents of Mrs. J.O. and Mrs. F.V. Barnes of Hopkington, Iowa arrived in Marcus and expect to make their home here. They will build a home on the lots just across the street from F.V. Barnes.
L. Heaton of Marcus topped the Sioux City market with a load of 49 head of Duroc Jersey hogs. They weighed 19,800 lbs. and bought $4.65 per hundred.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Sister Mary Corona, music teacher at Loretto Academy here, lift Sunday evening for Dubuque. She had been in Marcus for ten years.
S.M. Wixcel and D.A. Day will represent the Mitchell, Paige and Marathon autos in Marcus. A Model Greenwood five passenger touring car costs $1,275.
105 Years Ago -1918
Miller and Brown held a shorthorn dispersal sale on the Charles Brown farm south of Marcus March 25.
C.J. Pepple of Sioux City will return to Marcus in April to work as a painter and paper hanger.
Many patriotic Marcus people have returned sacks of flour to the stores where they purchased it in order to save wheat to win the war.
95 Years Ago -1928
Trula Smith, Grand Meadow teacher, resigned due to ill health.
Kenneth Bancroft has purchased an interest in a meat market at Correctionville.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hohbach and Mr. and Mrs. Amos Weber are parents of sons born on March 18.
85 Years Ago -1938
Cherokee County agent, C.H. Thompson, states the corn goal in the county for 1938 is 113,119 acres.
Mr. and Mrs. John Lepper moved into the residence vacated by the Orville Ferrins.
W.W. Bass defeated T.E. Herbert for mayor of Marcus 335 to 264 votes.
80 Years Ago – 1943
At a candlelight service Friday evening, March 19th, Hope Eileen Faul and Lyle W. Schlenger were united in marriage by the bride’s father, Rev Fremont Faul in the Marcus Methodist Church.
Mrs. Francis Toner will make her home in Marcus with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Delaney, while her husband is in service.
A music festival will be held Friday evening, August 9, in the Marcus High school. Mr. Morford is the current music instructor as he replace Arnold Rudd after his resignation in February.
75 Years Ago -1948
Over 140 guests paid honor to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Porter on their golden wedding anniversary. Sarah Heller and Ralph Porter were married March 23, 1898 in her parents home, Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Heller in Amherst Township.
Earl Davis is arranging the opening of an accounting office in Marcus about April 1st.
Louis Jorgesen purchased the plumbing and heating equipment of the Marcus Hardware and will house his new business in one of the Leavitt buildings near the Lumber yard.
70 Years Ago -1953
Earl’s Tavern and Lunch here was robbed of $276 sometime Friday night or Saturday morning. They forced a window open on the east side of the building.
Viktor Straub of Marcus bought the Remsen Locker Plant at auction Saturday afternoon for $15,000 and has taken possession as of March 16. He will continue to operate the Marcus locker and grocery as well as the Remsen locker.
65 Years Ago -1958
A capacity crowd gathered in Holy Name hall to honor the athletes and cheerleaders of Marcus Public and Holy Name High Schools. The annual banquet was sponsored by the Marcus Commercial Club.
Five Easter hams and $25 in Marcus money will be offered Saturday night. Last Saturday, Edith Vikander and Albert Seel each took home $25 prizes.
The town of Marcus collected $365 for the March of Dimes.
60 Years Ago -1963
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hinspeter celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, March 24, with an open house in the Grace Methodist Church parlors.
Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Stowater are the parents of a 10 lb. 9 oz. son born Tuesday, March 12. He is named Todd Alan and has a brother Tyler.
The estate of the late Arthur Melberg will be sold at Public Auction on Wednesday, March 27, on the farm southwest of Marcus.
55 Years Ago -1968
Mr. and Mrs. James Staab became the parents of their first child, a son, born Tuesday, March 19. He weighed 7 lb 5 oz. and is named John Roman.
Susan Erickson and Duane Wittkop and Debbie Davis and Marty Irwin were the Knights and Ladies for February and March of Marcus Community High School.
Keith Rupp has been notified that his persuasive essay has been accepted by the National Essay Press for publication in “Young America Speaks.”
Fire fanned by gale force winds burned a corn crib and granary, a small tool building and about 12,000 bushels of corn and grain on the Gerald Woltman farm southeast of Marcus.

Chuck Rassel will sell his farm machinery, hay, etc. and the 1973 lease on his farm at Public Auction on Wednesday, March 28.
Marcus Ken’s Foodland features a 3 lb. can of Folgers for $2.39 with coupon, a quart jar of Miracle Whip with coupon – 49¢ and Wells Cottage Cheese – 2 lb. carton for 69¢.

A Public Auction of Vernon Healy Estate will be held on the farm northwest of Marcus on Wednesday, March 29.
