130 Years Ago -1893
One of the heaviest snow storms known in this section for several years arrived Monday. It started early and continued until late in the evening. No trains arrived from the east until Tuesday morning. The streets were nearly blockaded.
Many of the Marcus wells have gone dry and if we have a dry spring, there will probably be a water famine.
125 Years Ago -1898
Mr. Andrew Scott of Granville and Miss Maggie Sandbeck of Marcus were married Thursday afternoon, February 24, in the Peter Moller residence, Remsen Township.
The Herbert boys of this area loaded a car with farm machinery, stock, household goods, etc. and departed for Minnesota where they will run a large farm.
120 Years Ago -1903
Mrs. Gund and daughter, Cora, returned from Jefferson, Iowa, where they had attended the funeral of Mrs. Gund’s mother.
E.J. Traumbauer and family departed for Winterset, Iowa, to make their future home. They intend to go into the blooded hog business on a large scale.
115 Years Ago – 1908
Marcus basketball players defeated the Sioux City high school boys basketball team 27 to 26 in the Y.M.C.A building at Sioux City. Marcus players were roughed up, the referee from Marcus was attacked as well as an attempted one on the lady spectators from Marcus. The Marcus crowd was egged on its way to the depot to ride the special train home. Since then, the principal of the Sioux City schools and some of the spectators have’ sent letters of apology to Marcus.
J. Beck purchased half of the old school building and P. Poulson gets the other part. It sold for $600. Beck intends to put her 30’ x 40’, two story high, back of his present store building and will remodel it for an opera house.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Former Marcusite, Mae W. Hamilton, now of Redondo Beach, Calif., is advising young men to stay in the East. She has hit an unusual winter with hail, frost and uncomfortable weather. She has also witnessed glorious sunsets, etc.
Miss Annette V. Rosene of Meriden and Walter J. Popma of Cherokee were married in the home of her parents in Meriden on Wednesday, February 26, at high noon. He is in the barber business at Cherokee where they will make their home.
Henry Abels and family of Flanigan, Ill., have taken possession of the 240 acre farm in Amherst which he bought from O.H. Briggs for $200 per acre.
Mr. Boodah, a young Persian student at Morningside College, filled the Presbyterian pulpit at Cleghorn Sunday morning and evening and gave two very interesting talks.
105 Years Ago -1918
Miss Beatrice Corbett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Corbett was married to Cally LeRoy Ellis at the home of the bride on Tuesday, March 5.
Peters Bros. are showing the Titan Tractors this week.
Clyde Hull, the old reliable horse buyer, will be in Marcus Wednesday at the Nagle Livery Barn and will offer top prices for riding and work horses.
Amos Weber has a bone broken in his ankle. His horse he was riding, slipped and fell on him.
95 Years Ago -1928
The Marcus boy’s basketball team brought home the county trophy by defeating Grand Meadow 18 to 10 at Washta. Marcus players included Dale Barnes, Jack Friend, Elroy Baumann, Ab Anderson, Vernon Simons and Delbert and Delmer Drefke.
E.C. Walrod, proprietor of the Subway Bob and Barber Shop, sold same to Lattman and Nelson of Sioux City.
Emil Digel, 43, passed away February 21, after an illness of only a few hours.
85 Years Ago -1938
Adeline Treinen of Marcus and Marvin Semmens of Cherokee were married in Immaculate Conception Church at Cherokee on February 21.
The Fred Zoch family moved from here to a farm near Cherokee.
Stanley Simons won second place in the 165 lb. class at the wrestling meet at Fort Dodge.
Fire damaged the Jake Roseen home southwest of Marcus and also the Harvey Miller home on old #5 last week.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Sgt. Laurence K. Bass, 26, and Pfc. Carl O. Benson, 24, were reported missing in action since February 17 in the North African Campaign.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burch are the parents of a daughter, born Tuesday, March 2.
Betty Holmes, Sue Hogue, Ruth McQueen and Barbara Wallin have had perfect spelling papers for six weeks.
F.C. 2/c Jim Knox of the U.S. Navy completed his schooling at Norfolk, Virginia, and spent a few days leave with his mother, Mrs. Dess Knox.
Earnest N. Wells, 68, passed away on February 25 at Sioux City. He is survived by his aged father, N.T. Wells, a son, a daughter and three brothers.
75 Years Ago -1948
The Marcus community donated $222.50 to the March of Dimes.
Broblek and Woodall have received the Kaiser-Frazer Franchise to sell and service their autos in Marcus and the surrounding area.
Shirley Pearson and Darrell Johnson will represent the Marcus public school in the annual county spelling bee, scheduled for Monday, March 15.
Donald White, Paul Johnson and Doris Miller of Marcus #6 have been absent with the mumps.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ohlendorf have moved into their newly built home south of the Dr. G.A. Wiedemeier home. Their son Glen and his wife have moved to the Ohlendorf farm.
70 Years Ago -1953
Dr. Paul Norris of St. Louis is spending a week with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Norris. Paul is doing his residency in surgery at St. Louis’ Barnes Hospital.
William and Harry Kaiser flew to Long Beach, California to be with their critically ill mother, Mrs. Anna Kaiser.
Harry Weicht of Marcus has completed his training at the Extension School at Omaha and is now a student operator at the Cleghorn depot.
James Apel, a member of the army reserves, has been recalled for two years of active service. He is stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Mr. and Mrs. Welton Hesse of Meriden are the parents of an 8 lb. 7 1/2 oz. son, Ralph Welton, born Sunday, March 1.
65 Years Ago -1958
Holy Name’s basketball team won the Sectional Tournament and upset Quimby boys in the first round of districts and lost to Hospers in the second round.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Comp will move to Storm Lake where they will operate Dairy Queen.
Marcus Public School will host the district debate tournament with eleven schools competing.
Mrs. Kenneth Prunty of Cleghorn returned home from Gordon Memorial Hospital at Sioux City, after a two week siege of virus pneumonia.
Mr. and Mrs. John Dunn of Marcus are the parents of a 7 lb. 1 oz. daughter, born March 2.
60 Years Ago -1963
Felix Treinen was honored on his 80th birthday by a gathering of family and friends. Four of his eight children live in California and they were unable to be here.
Kathy Bird was honored on her tenth birthday as fourteen guests joined her for a party.
Peter Juetken, an exchange student from Holland, gave a very interesting talk on his country at Family Night at Mt. Pleasant Church.
Mrs. Orman Nafziger and girls are spending several weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cy Delaney, at Marcus while Orman attends training school at Chicago.
Former Marcus resident. Mrs. Lulu Miller, will present the program “Armchair Adventures” at Marcus Community School. She will share her trip to England with the group.
55 Years Ago -1968
Ed Schnoes, Sr., 78, an area resident for many years, passed away Wednesday, February 28 in his Marcus home. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, four sons, one sister and one brother.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Glackin of Marcus are the parents of a 6 lb. 6 oz. daughter, Melissa Jo, born Tuesday, February 20. She has two brothers and two sisters.
Dean and Darren Saner were honored on their third birthday with a party Sunday afternoon given by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Saner.
Harold Brooks, janitor at Marcus public school told students that he walks about ten miles per day. They figured that in the eight years before he retires, he will have trod 24,000 miles.
A post wedding reception, honoring Captain and Mrs. Michael Treinen, was held in Holy Name Hall here Sunday, February 25. They were married January 20 at Fort Lee, Virginia.
50 Years Ago -1973
Mrs. Harry Hazen, nee Hazel McNally, is the Senior Citizen of Marcus for February.
Miss Joyce Peavey of Marcus and John Legg of Anita, Iowa are planning an August wedding.
Mary Kestel, Cindy Rupp, Brian Friedrick and Cindy Ohlendorf earned I’s at the district speech contest and will continue on to state.
Mark Wilcox, 18, of Marcus was selected as the first recipient of the Floyd Andre Memorial Scholarship of $200. He is a 1972 graduate of Meriden-Cleghorn.
Thomas Roberts, 83, a life long Marcus resident, passed away after a lingering illness. He is survived by his wife, Lilly.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Floyd V. Nagle, 83, passed away after a long illness. He and his brother “Bud” had many business ventures in Marcus — poultry and eggs, miniature golf course, Japanese Gardens dance hall, grocery store, apparel shop and the Nagle Bros. Chevrolet. He is survived by his wife and one brother.
Marcus Board of Education accepted the bid of Hesse Chevrolet for a new station wagon for special education transportation the bid was $4, 986.
Pascal Deblaise, a French farmer, will spend a year on the Verdell Johnson farm at Cleghorn as part of an exchange program.
Cynthia Lee Ohlendorf and Mitchel D. Bauman are planning a May 27th wedding.
Mark VerSteeg, Doug Rasmus and Julie Helget are pictured in the Meriden-Cleghorn Senior Spotlight.
40 Years Ago –1983
Jeff and Ann Schmillen are the parents of a 7 lb. 15 oz. son, Joshua Robert, born Saturday, February 26.
Melanie Birch, 8th grader of Meriden-Cleghorn, will advance to the Area IV spelling competition at Sheldon High School March 19. Jamie Egger is runner-up.
St. Mary’s Parish Activity Club at Remsen is sponsoring a Dinner-Theatre on March 20. It will include an Iowa chop supper and “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” for $5.00.
There is a written memorial in this issue to Lon Brownmiller of Kids Korner. Who could ever forget Lon? She always found something good in the worst of us.
The annual winter concert of the Marcus High School Music Department will be presented Wednesday, March 9, under the direction of Jerry Bertrand and Liz Swanson.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Gentry Berger and Michele Hanson of Marcus took part in a three-day, nine-city concert tour with the University of South Dakota Symphonic Band.
Marcus and Meriden-Cleghorn joint sharing committees of the two school districts met to discuss issues and make recommendations to the two boards.
Jason Ladenthin and Kenny Drefke tied for first in the Middle School Math Contest. Ted Willis placed second and Denny Lauters and Allison Dorr tied for third.
30 Years Ago – 1993
The third grade Search students visited the Bob and Nancy Hier home. Nancy and Bob have lived in the family home for generations. They served the children apple cider warmed over the fireplace.
