130 Years Ago -1893
J.D. Bishop has disposed of his fine farm just north of Marcus to Mr. C. Strubher of Danvers, Illinois. At least 15 people from Danvers have purchased property in the Marcus vicinity in the past two years. They are all practical farmers with plenty of means, the kind that make an area prosperous and solid.
John Dunn, a Marcus resident for several years, has purchased the half section farm of John Metcalf, just north of Marcus, and will move there about the first of March. The present tenant, Joe Cousins, will go to Paullina.
125 Years Ago -1898
Rev. Father O’Reilly of Holy Name Church united Harry Mick and Anna Walsh in marriage at 5:30 p.m. A reception was held in the elegant home of the bride’s sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Niemann. The Mick’s will make their home in Marcus.
On Wednesday evening, February 23, Miss Vera Bradly and Mr. Andrew Rae were united in marriage by Rev. Black.
110 Years Ago -1903
Rev. C.W. Coons resigned his pastorate of the Methodist Evangelical Church here. He moved his family to Jennings, Louisiana due to Mrs. Coon’s failing health.
The mercury dropped to 12 degrees below zero, accompanied by a northwest wind.
Jacob Liggett, father of Henry Liggett of Marcus, died in his home at Winnebago, Illinois February 10. He was 80 years old.
110 Years Ago – 1913
George C. Tutt of Storm Lake purchased the one-half interest of Charles Addy in the Day and Addy Hardware stock. Mr. Tutt has rented the J.A. Keys residence and his wife and two children will move to Marcus next week.
A “shadow social” will be held -on Friday evening, February 28, at the Marcus Township special school. Ladies are asked to bring suppers for two.
Archie Thompson, of Sioux Rapids, has accepted a position with Collins-Treinen Auto Co.
Mr. and Mrs. P.O. Bird and daughter returned home after visiting a few days with his brothers, Charles and Will and families at Ellsworth.
105 Years Ago -1918
Maynard Collins and Rose Theisen were married last week.
L.M. Miller and Brown will sell their 60 Percheron horses at a sale in the Sioux City pavillion in the stockyards February 27.
The U.S. Food Administration will penalize anyone found guilty of hoarding flour $1,000.
Ella Grauer and Bernard Ohlendorf were married February 27 at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Dorothy Annette Quinn celebrated her 8th birthday party Saturday afternoon with ten little girls present.
Mrs. Margaret Wirt celebrated her 80th birthday Saturday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ivan Addy.
Ray Peters, Max Radcliffe and Earl Gill are officers of the Marcus summer band.
Elizabeth Bierman was wed to Leslie Hodgens February 25 in the Paul Bierman home.

Beulah H. Simons and John F. Coburn were married February 22 in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Simons.
Bea-Jo Style Nook will soon hold a formal opening in their location in the Dempsey Building.
Ben and Bill Radcliffe lost a valuable horse this week which had been entered as a trotter in several fairs.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Norma Alesch visited her parents for the weekend. She is employed as a transport clerk in the Veteran’s Hospital at Lincoln, Nebraska.
The OPA has set 12 hours per day and no more than 72 hours per week for Marcus Service stations, as well as all other through out the county.
75 Years Ago -1948
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Petersen and daughters, Janice, Marilyn and Carol moved into their completely finished modern home, one mile southwest of Marcus.
Marcus farmer, Marvin Seel, is improving after being thrown from his tractor when he ran into a concrete post near Jaminet’s Mobil Service in east -Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Woodall began moving into their home in east Marcus from the farm 5 1/2 miles southeast of town.
70 Years Ago -1953
Joe Brady has decided to quit farming and will hold a closing out sale Wednesday, February 25, on the farm two miles east and two miles south of Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Max Delaney of Marcus are the parents of an 8 lb. 2 oz. son, named James Max, born Thursday, February 9. He has a sister, Beverly Jean.
Percy Means will sell the small, new house on his property east of Highway #143 in Marcus. It is 12’ x 26’ – two rooms and a bath with 6’ x 8’ built on porch. It will be sold at auction on Thursday, February 26.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bird are the parents of an 8 lb. 8 oz. girl born Sunday, February 15.

Pvt. Francis L. Wendt has arrived at his new station at Inchon, Korea.
Louie Miller of Marcus underwent surgery in the University of Iowa and is making a rapid recovery according to his wife, Rachel.
Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Goodrich of Cleghorn will observe their 60th wedding anniversary at an open house in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday.
Mrs. Lowell Nelson returned home from Sioux City’s St. Vincent’s Hospital where she had spinal surgery five weeks ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Galles are the parents of a 8 lb. 10 oz. son born Wednesday, February 12. He is named Joseph Trent.
60 Years Ago -1963
Leeds High School, Sioux City, placed 1st in the War Eagle Conference basketball conference with the Marcus Eagles placing second.
Rev. C.W. Samuelson of Marcus passed away Sunday, February 24, at Iowa City University Hospital. His is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, and a sister. Burial was in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.
Evans Implement will hold Open House on Tuesday, February 26, with free door prizes, movies, coffee and doughnuts and show the all new 1800 and 1600 Oliver tractors.
“The Spiral Road”, a dramatic story of Dutch doctors at work in jungle colonies, starring Rock Hudson, Burl Ives and Gena Rowlands, can be seen at the local Marland Sunday and Monday nights.

Marine Lance Cpl. Michael W. Rae of Marcus is now serving in Vietnam.
Lee Grage, wrestling in the 95 lb. class, won 1st place in the Class A sectionals at Hawarden.
Diana Drefke celebrated her 8th birthday Sunday evening with a party hosted by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Drefke.
The Marcus Eagletts completed their regular season with a 17-5 record — they defeated Hull Western Christian 52-45 on February13.
50 Years Ago -1973
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shea are the parents of a son born Sunday, February 18. William Patrick weighed 6 lbs. 11 oz. and has two brothers and two sisters.
Marilyn Ferrin, Judy Wilkens, Jerry Kuehn and Steve Bryant will be singing in the Tall Corn Festival at UNI.
Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Mayer returned home after spending two months visiting in the homes of Mrs. Charles Rosburg and family and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mayer. Both live at Ventura, Calif.
Norman (Dutch) Hagenbucher, 63, was killed in an automobile accident at Spencer on Saturday, February 17. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, three brothers and three sisters.
Soybean prices soared to $5.83 per bushel. Plymouth County sheriff, Ed Guntren, warns farmers to beware of the active thieves in the area. They back up to bean spouts and drive away with the expensive beans.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Busch are the parents of a 7 lb. 7 1/2 oz. girl, Katie Jane, born Thursday, February 16.
Beverly Taylor of Cherokee and Steven Stodden of Marcus are planning a June 3 wedding.
Mr. Bertrand and most of the Marcus Jazz Band enjoyed the Maynard Ferguson concert at Sioux City on February 11.
The Meriden-Cleghorn board of education discussed golf and softball spring sports for the girls but no action was taken.
Marcus Eagles lost their third game of the season to Granville Spalding 57-51. The Eagles failed to score on 13 attempts in the first quarter. Bird led the Eagles with 13 points.
40 Years Ago –1983
Frank Bierman, 87, of Marcus passed away after a short Illness. Funeral services were held Friday, February 18. He is survived by three daughters and four sons.
Mrs. Linda Bindner talked to the Marcus fourth graders about Wildlife Habitat and Conservation of our soil. She works for the Conservation Office.
35 Years Ago – 1988
The Marcus Clinic announces the addition of Jackson Craig as Physician’s Assistant. He will be working with Drs. Powell and Doorenbos and he will make his home at Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Letsche of Marcus are the parents of a 9 lb. 10 oz. son, Jeremy Edward, born February 15.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Marcus received over 14” of snow this past weekend and are enjoying sub zero temperatures with sheer wind gusts.
An open house honoring Stanley Nervig on his retirement from the Farmer’s State Bank of Marcus will be held March 6 at the local Community Center. He joined the Marcus bank in 1956.
