Cherokee County Board of Supervisors Meeting
The Cherokee County Board of Supervisors met in special session on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at the Cherokee Fire Station with Rick Mongan, Duane Mummert, and Dave Skou present. Bryan Petersen and Cheryl Ellis were unable to attend. Jake Kurtz, Aurelia Star, represented the press. Justin Pritts, Steve Schmillen, Pat Bunt, Conrad Ebert, Robin Jenness, Charissa Frangione, Robin Harvey, Gene Suhr, Roman Redig, Sue Johnson, Steph McSparran, Police Chief Brian Flikeid, Deputy Jackie Stephens, and Sheriff Derek Scott were also in attendance.
Chairman Mongan called the informational meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.
The purpose of the special meeting was to discuss ways to retain individuals to provide death investigator services in the county. Cherokee Regional Medical Center has provided these services in the past but has notified the Board of Supervisors that they will no longer act in this capacity as of June 30, 2023. Several options were discussed and suggestions were offered by those in attendance. After a productive brainstorming session amongst representatives from Aurelia, Marcus and Cherokee County; it was determined the best approach was to have law enforcement officers administer the program. Police Chief Flikeid and Deputy Stephens will co-administer and schedule additional individuals as needed to respond to the scene of a death. 28E agreements between Cherokee County and the cities of Aurelia and Marcus will be drafted to state responsibilities of each entity for death investigation services and reimbursements of costs to be paid by Cherokee County.
There being no further business, Chairman Mongan called for a motion to adjourn the meeting.
Motion by Skou, seconded by Mummert to adjourn the meeting at 6:45 p.m.
