Patrick Londergan has gone to George, IA to reside with his son. Steve.
D.H. Ehlers sold his fine residence property to James Gurley.
August Road sold his fine residence property adjoining the Swedish Lutheran Church to the church and they will use it as a parsonage.
125 Years Ago -1898
Lizzie French, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John French of Amherst, was married to Mr. A.A. Goodburn at 6:00 p.m., Dec. 19, in the home of the bride’s parents.
E.J. Trumbauer, land agent at Marcus, offers cheap, beautiful, fertile land in southern Minnesota from $9.00 to $22.50 per acre. From $1.00 to $4.50 per acre is required as first payment.
110 Years Ago -1903
Fourteen to eighteen below was the reported temperature in this area this past week.
The Cherokee Herald has been consolidated with the Times and it will be called the Times-Herald.
G. M. Alvord has moved his stock of goods into the P.N. Brown building opposite L. Seeger’s harness shop and will eventually move into the Turner Building.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bjork of Marcus Township are the parents of a son born Friday, Jan. 3.
M. Weber and his wife, of Sulphur Springs, are seeking a home in Marcus where he is clerk at the Illinois Central depot.
Carl L. Fry and his nephew, Kenneth Fry, of Northville, NY, spent two weeks in Marcus in connection with the settlement of the Fry estate.
Andrew Galigan is holding a Public Sale, Wednesday, Jan. 29. He has decided to quit farming and will sell 15 head of horses, 42 head of cattle, hogs and machinery at his farm one mile northwest of Marcus.
A reception was held Friday evening in the Chris Grauer home honoring his daughter Lottie and her husband Chels Metcalf, who just returned from a wedding trip to Marshaltown.
Christmas Eve brought a baby boy to the Jethro Stowater home. He checked in at ten pounds.
95 Years Ago -1928
A new Whippet Coach, driven by H.F. Treinen, and a Hudson, driven by J.T. Woodall, collided near Washta.
C.W. and H.L. Brower of Marcus were two of the members of the Brower quartet heard on KWCU radio station.
Wm. Muller is on the sick list and Lou McDaniel, a former barber, is assisting in the shop.

The Better Marcus Club collected $1,493.44 from local sources to promote business during the past year.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sagness of Marcus are the parents of a daughter born Jan. 18.
Jean Stowater was honored on her 17th birthday Saturday evening at a party given by friends.
George W. Johnson retired this week from the photography business after over thirty-three years of business.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Mrs. Agnes Haahr received a telegram from her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Jens Andersen of Denmark, through the Red Cross. It is the first news received in two years. They assure Agnes that all are well.
Pvt. Harry F. Rasmussen of Morris Field, Charlotte, NC is spending a ten day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Rasmussen.
Former Marcusite Pvt. James Radcliffe and Ella Jean Newholm of Dayton, IA, were married Jan. 8 at Kansas City, MO. Jim graduated from Marcus High, attended Wayne Nebraska Normal and has been an employee of Republic Steel Corp., Chicago.
Lola Grauer and Arno Wittkopp exchanged nuptial vows on the evening of January 3 at 9:15 o’clock in the First Lutheran Church in Omaha. NE.
Marion Stowater became the bride of Raymond Schmillen January 7 at five o’clock in the Carmel Lutheran Church.

Dr. M.F. Joynt attended the funeral of his brother-in-law, Vincent Southworth at Emmetsburg.
Clark Gable and Deborah Kerr star in the “The Hucksters” now showing at the Lyric Theatre here.
Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Aim of Cleghorn announce the engagement of their daughter, Doris, to George Gottsche, Jr., also of Cleghorn.
Alice and Sade McClintock were pleasantly surprised when 30 ladies gathered in their home to celebrate their recent birthdays. The ladles enjoyed playing Bingo.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Brady are the parents of an 8 lb. 3 oz. son, Timothy Frank, born Monday, Jan. 5. Timothy has one sister, Jane.
The Marcus boys receiving honorable discharges from the armed forces are Sgt. Derald Hendrickson, T/5 James Muehl and Cpl. Dale Young.

Holy Name Wildcats ran their winning streak to eleven with a 60 to 45 win over Alton St. Mary’s. Dick Boever was high for Holy Name with 19 points.
Bud Nagle served 600 donuts and used 10 pounds of coffee at the formal showing of the 1953 Chevrolet. The BelAir was on display.
Volunteer help is needed in the work on the new Marcus theatre, it is nearing completion.
Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Miller are the parents of a son, Richard Oliver, born Wednesday, Jan. 14. He weighed 8 lbs. 9 oz. and has two brothers, Eugene and Jimmy.
Wendell Grauer assumed duties as the new president of the Commercial Club at the noon meeting Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Claire Green of Cherokee announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Doris Viola, to Edgar S. Roseen.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Weber are the parents of an 8 lb. 15 oz. son, Richard Joseph, born Thursday, Jan. 16.
Frank Lawhead, 80, of Marcus passed away in the Dill Nursing home here. He came to Marcus about 1900 and is survived by his only daughter, Mrs. Matt (Leona) Schmillen of Marcus.
Jack Clarkson was high scorer for Holy Name Wildcats with 17 points as they defeated Storm Lake in the Class B division of the diocesan tournament.
The sophomore class of Grand Meadow enjoyed a skating party Monday evening, followed by supper in the Walter Bates home.
Melvin C. Nelson will hold a Public Sale of his farm machinery, hogs, etc. on Thursday, Jan. 23, on the farm one mile north and one mile west of Bud’s Station at Cleghorn.
60 Years Ago -1963
The Marcus Garden Club met Jan. 8 in the home of Mrs. Vance Marquis. After the regular meeting and lunch, the group enjoyed the beautiful antiques in the Marquis home.
The Grand Opening of the Cleghorn Lumber Co., the former Rock Island Lumber Co. will be soon.
Greater Marcus, Inc. will hold their annual meeting in the Marland Theatre, Secretary John Leavitt will report on the operation of the theatre for the past year and three directors will be elected.
The Marcus Community School will present its annual Winter Band concert on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Capt. Dick Jacobs, clarinetist from the Sioux City Air Base will be featured with the concert band.
The Marcus Community school’s new gymnasium will be the site of the Northwest Girls’ Conference basketball tournament on the next three Saturdays.

Sp 4/c Robert Worden arrived home from Vietnam on Jan. 12 to spend his leave with his parents, Skip and Irene Worden.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Meylor moved into the home they recently purchased from the Wm. Roethler estate. Mr. and Mrs. George Hoefling of California moved into the farm home of the Ed Meylors.
David Delperdang, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Delperdang of Remsen, remains in grave condition following a one car accident Sunday afternoon. He has been employed at the Marcus Farmer’s Co-op Elevator for several months.
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Nillis of Remsen are parents of a daughter born Sunday, Jan. 14, 1968.
Mr. and Mrs. Ned Bork will be honored Sunday, Jan. 21, at an open house in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Joe Kestel of Marcus has opened a TV Appliance and TV Repair shop in the Knudson building where the post office used to be 103 W. Cedar St.
Jeanette Juhl, operator of the R & E Cafe is open for business and will hold a Grand Opening soon.
Ken’s Foodland advertises 3 – 46 oz. cans of Hunts Tomato Juice -$1.00: a 2 lb. carton Wells Cottage Cheese – 69¢; and a quart of Miracle Whip – 49¢.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Boy Scout Troop #113 of Marcus received eight new tents as the result of picking up corn on the Ron Schilmoeller farm and getting $200 from the local Jaycees.
The Meriden-Cleghorn continuing Adult Education program is offering a four-week course on Microwave Cooking.
Kris Lenertz of Remsen and Ron Schnoes of Marcus were married Dec. 3, 1977 at Remsen St. Mary’s Church. Father Bob McClintock, cousin of the groom, officiated at the ceremony.
Helen Ehmcke was installed as Worthy Matron of the Marcus Chapter O.E.S. and Langdon Polson is Worthy Patron.
40 Years Ago –1983
Mr. and Mrs. Steve Erdman of Marcus are the parents of a 7 lb. 7oz. son, Benjamin Lloyd, born Tuesday, Jan. 11.
Cherokee County collected a total of $8,632,193 in property taxes during the year ending June 30, 1982. That includes $1,456,382 in tax credits from the state.
Kathy Weber, formerly of Marcus, and Larry Paulson of Maple, MN are planning an April 30th wedding at Marcus Holy Name.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Doug Briggs, Jeff Schmillen, John Ryan, and Dennis Brady attended the National Jaycee Convention in Reno, NV, where they were nominated for national awards.
Jill Cronin led the Lady Eagles with 25 points in defeating Akron-Westfield 53-44.
The Cleghorn Lions Club will sponsor an omelet brRobert Hanson, manager of the Marcus Division of the Moorman Mfg. Co. will be transferred to the home office at Quincy, IL, February 1.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Edgar and Doris (Green) Roseen will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a family party in their daughter and son-in-laws home, Karen and Jim Kunkel with Doug and Linda Roseen and Brian Roseen as co-hosts.
Brian and Geri Lynn Specht are the parents of their first child, a 6 lb. 14 oz. daughter, Stephanie Lynn, born Friday, Jan. 15.
