105 Years Ago – 1917
Mr. and Mrs. Alseph of Amherst announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Mary Isabella, to John Richard Gregg of Cherokee.
Charles Woodall was called to Merrill this afternoon by reason of the dearth of the two year old child of his sisters, Mrs. Joe Donlin.
Carrying out his promise made last week, engineer Gaynor of Sioux City, was in Marcus yesterday and last night, discussing with the council concerning an electric light plant.
85 Years Ago -1937
Howard Peavey had a bone in his leg cracked while playing football with the Marcus team against Washta Friday night. Howard now has his leg in a cast.
Nagle Bros. has recently completed the building of poultry trailer, 8 x 18 feet in dimension, in which they will haul poultry to Chicago and other eastern markets.
Coach Orr’s Golden Eagles opened the football season with a grand flourish on a new field Friday night, playing the first football game in the history of Marcus, the Eagles defeating Washta 13-0.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Thieves, who identity remains a mystery, broke into the Satterlee drugstore Tuesday night, and made a good haul of cash and narcotics.
The Marcus High Football team opens their season against the strong Cherokee eleven, at Cherokee Friday night.
Ann Sothern and Red Skelton are starring “Maisie Gets Her Man”, showing in the Lyric.
75 Years Ago -1947
Mrs. Charles Crocker, on boarding the bus from Evenston, IL fell. On arriving home she went to the doctor’s office and found she had broken two ribs and torn the ligaments in her right knee.
The 160-acre John W. Galles farm, four miles west of Marcus, occupied by the Gordon Garvin family, was sold last Thursday to Ray Alesch.
70 Years Ago – 1952
For the first time in the history of Marcus pasteurized milk is now available from a local plant.
Mrs. Gene Tschill entertained twenty girls Sunday afternoon in honor of her daughter, Carole, on her eleventh birthday anniversary.
Marjorie, Rose and Leo Schnoes visited Sunday at LeMars in the Sacred Heart Hospital with Paul, the six-years old son of Mrs. Minnie McIntosh who was under treatment for pneumonia and a serious head infection.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Mr. & Mrs. Bernard Gravenish of Meriden are the parents of a daughter, Marilyn Kay.
Theodore Treinen, a resident of this community since 1890, passed away in the Sacred Heart Hospital.
Kenneth McQueen arrived home Monday to spend a leave from the Marine Corps.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Ogren were pleasantly surprised on their 20th wedding anniversary when many friends and neighbors dropped in.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Briggs announce the birth of their second child, a daughter, Evelyn Jane. She has a sister, Wendelin Beth.
Meehan Produce here closed its doors last Saturday night. Andy Meehan, operator of the business, starting that the egg-buying field has grown too crowded, making his business inoperable.
Walter “Bud” Harvey, 68, died suddenly Sunday afternoon in Cherokee. He had been helping load our horses following a trail ride when he dropped to the ground.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Tom Sokolowski won the bicycle given away by the Marcus Lumber Company during their recent sale. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Sokolowski of rural Marcus.
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs., LeRoy Brownmiller. She has been named Glenda Kay.
Neal Drefke has been elected president of the Society of American Military Engineers at South Dakota State University for the 1967-1968 school year. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Drefke of Marcus.
50 Years Ago – 1972
A Marcus Community School bus, carrying about 12 to 14 passengers, collided with Sanborn milk truck. The accident occurred at an intersection south of Marcus.
Cadet Viktor E. Nenortas, son of Mrs. Stasys Nenortas of Marcus is one of more than 850 cadets entering their senior year at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Grauer of Marcus observed their 25th wedding anniversary at an informal gathering Sunday, afternoon, October 1, in their home.
Reverend C. W. Samuelson told the Marcus Commercial Club that the colt show showed a profit of nearly $600. They discussed plans for improving the fair grounds, and also dismantling the Marcus Honor Roll board.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Marcus Medco Salutes Doug Rohwer, better known as “Yogi” He operates the Motor Parts Sales Co.
The Marcus High School marching band performed at halftime at the football game with Jeannine Dunn as majorette and Julie Goth, Connie Hodge, Bobbi Nelson, and Robbin Hanson as twirlers.
40 Years Ago –1982
The congregation of the First Presbyterian Church at Cleghorn celebrated their 100th birthday Sunday with special morning and afternoon services. Two hundred thirty three members and guests registered for the happy occasion on a beautiful made to order fall day.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Grauer will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary with an open house and customer appreciation dinner at the Marcus Club House on October 2 with a social hour and dinner.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Homecoming royalty chosen by the student body were King Bruce Dreckman and Queen Rhonda Yockey. Attendants were Stephanie Simons, Karla Alesch, John Kauffman and colt Berger. Crown bearers were Heidi Dreckman and Johnathan Schreier.
Bill and Lori Sokolowski of Washta are the proud of parents of twin boys, Jordan Michael and Travis Robert. They were welcomed home by Jacob and Simone.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Cheryl Dreckman and Karen Garvi Wayholbplayed in the ASA Women’s national Softball slow pitch tournament at Marietta, Gerogia, September 24 and 25. They placed first in th estate and second in regionals, to advanec to nationals.
Glen Self had a green pepper in his garden that weighed 1 pound and 1.9 ounces.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Alice Tracey Pitts, 80, a former Marcusite, passed away September 18th in her home. She is survived by 6 sons, 4 daughters, a sister and 2 brothers.
Area quilter, JoAnn Erickson was awarded a $500 first prize on her original “Radiant Kaleidoscope Stars” wall hanging.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Amella Keffeler, 95, of Marcus died Saturday, Sepetember 21 at Heartland Care Center.
Craig Lane, President of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation presented the Ogren Family a Centry Farm plaque for owning the same farm for 100 years or more.
The MMC Homecoming Canidates are Bart Alesch, Zach Wilcox, Cody Schneider, Rachel Monen, Missy Prunty and Brandi Hanson.
