110 Years Ago – 1912
Showers were given this week in honor of Mrs. Ben H. Hall, former Hallie Fry.
Mildred Mossman was awarded a diamond ring last Saturday by the Marcus Cooperative company for a word contest.
Peter Miller was their first man drawn in Cherokee county for the first conscription army.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Vera Dawson and Leonard Ferrin were injured in an auto collision near Cherokee July 14.
Myron Dorr was badly injured on Tuesday when the car he was driving collided with one driven Mrs. Kehrberg of LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Goodburn are parents of a baby girl who has been named Esther LaVonne.
85 Years Ago -1937
E.P. Westerbuty has decided to close his bakery business in Marcus and return to Sioux City.
Thirty five men of this community went to the Louis Means farm Friday and shocked 50 acres of grain as Mr. Means has pneumonia.
Nancy Heline underwent a tonsillectomy at Sioux Valley Hospital at Cherokee on Monday.
Earl Jenkins is employed in Wagner’s store, succeeding Earnest Wienk who left this week for California.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Marvin Polson, Howard Johnson, William Cronin and Donald Hendrickson received diplomas Monday evening having completed a six months course in radio theory and international morse code.
Clyde Dunnington was recently installed as commander of the local Legion post.
Kenneth Pallesen, who recently attended boys state at Grinnell gave a report to the Legionnaires at their last meeting.
The new chancel will be dedicated at the Methodist church Sunday.
75 Years Ago -1947
Mrs. C.L. Flanagan, 72, of Marcus passed away Wednesday, following an illness of several months.
Lyle Weicht of Marcus has reenlisted in the army, rejoining at the grade in which he was discharged, a corporal.
Seventeen ladies gathered in the home of their neighbor and friend, Mrs. Myrtle Benedict, Friday afternoon to honor her at a hanky shower on her birthday.
70 Years Ago – 1952
The Marcus cubs won their own baseball tournament her on Wednesday evening, beating the Granville boys 8 to 4 after being with in a half-second of defeat.
Mr. & Mrs. Vern Barnes announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Shirlee, to David Leon Nelson to take place, August 17.
Marion Richer, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Ricker, who has been on the critical list at St. Vincents’s Hospital in Sioux City is reported to be holding her own. She was photographed in the respirator, talking to comedian Bob Hope who was in Sioux City to star in a show staged for the benefit of polio patients. Mrs. M.A. Van Dam, Harrison Specht, Lois White and John Hipple are others with new cases of polio.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Butch Ames, son of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Ames, has become the youngest business operator in Marcus. The 14-year old youth purchased the Kid’s Korner drive-in from Mrs. Madeline Dalton, and is now in possession.
Officials of the West Iowa Telephone company and their attorney met with the mayor and town council Wednesday evening to discuss plans for dial service in the town of Marcus.
The Rev. C.W. Samuelson, who has been pastor of Carmel Lutheran Church in Marcus the past 25 years will retire from his duties this month.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Equipment for a new beauty shop in Marcus is being installed by Margie Schnoes in the home of her sisters, Mrs. Minnie McClintock. Margie was an April graduate of the Ellis Beauty School in Sioux City and has been with Maxine’s at Sheldon.
Church Simons, a veteran of 4-H work, and son of Mr. & Mrs. Donald Simons of Marcus, showed the champion baby beef at the Cherokee fair last week. He is a member of the Tilden Tillers.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Petersen announce the engagement of their daughter Marilyn, to James Kruse, son of Mr. & Mrs. Truman Kruse of Granville.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Craig Peterson, 16, son of Marie Peterson, lost the tip of a finger last Friday while chopping weeds in the bean field on the Clifford Ferrin farm.
The equipment of the Idle Hour Cafe in Marcus will be sold at public auction this Sunday afternoon, Harold Ladenthin, operator of Harold’s Rexall Drugs, has purchased the building and plans to use it as an expansion of the drug store quarters.
Linda Dorr, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Dale Dorr, completed 2100 hours of training at the Stewart School of Hairstyling in Sioux City on August 3.
50 Years Ago – 1972
In a nuptial Mass at Visitation parish at Maryhill on July 8 Roberta Ann Swanger and Gary Gary were united in marriage.
Rockie Bork, son of Mr. & Mrs. Haorld (Bud) Bork has received his B.S. in Education degree in elementary and secondary physical education from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion.
30 Years Ago –1977
Jill DeMeris Hogue, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Leland Hogue, has just completed the LPN course at Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg.
Mr. & Mrs. Bentley Brown, Paullina, announce the engagement of their daughter, Rachel Lynn, to Terry Pallesen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Pallesen.
Brian Zimmerman of Fairfield left for his home Friday after spending the past two weeks in the home of her grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Schlenger.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Jim’s Farm Service has recently moved into the No. 1 feed sales position for the ”Top 25” dealers out of the Estherville branch of Golden Sun Feeds.
Fred Hoover returned home Sunday afternoon from Redlands, California, having been called there by the illness of his mother, Mrs. Jane Underwood.
Capt. and Mrs. Ronald Garvin and Becky of Shaw A.F.B. S. Car., retuned to their home Friday after spending several days in the Merlin Garvin home.

Ann Schmillen announces the opening of her new beauty salon “The cutting Company” family hair care.
Mark Theisen returned home after completing his Reserve Basic Training at Ft. Still, Oklahoma.
Harold Johnson, 81, of Cleghorn passed away Monday in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Jim Glackin, son of Alice and the late Joseph Glackin, a 1983 graduate of Marcus High, assumed command of B Co. 1-38 Inf., Fort Benning, Georgia, on July 22, 1992.
Ray and Marian Schmillen will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary January 7.
Babies on Parade was held on Thursday evening and had twelve babies decked out for the fair. Mark Nelson paraded as a future farmer, Rachel McDermott and Karl Letsche as future athletes; and Taylor Stowater, Jenna Mittelstadt, Nathan Wendt, Melanie Means, Shelby Landers, Megan Deichman, Robyn Cave, Stephanie Puhrmann and Ashley Weber were in their Sunday best.
Abby Schlenger, daughter of Ed ad Kate Schlenger of rural Marcus is the 1992 Little Miss Marcus. First runner up is Jill Staab, daughter of Pat and Claudette Staab.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Alvin Steffens, 69, of Cleghorn died Monday, July 28, burial was in Cherokee at Memory Gardens. Survivors include his wife, 3 sons and 2 daughters.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Ty Spieler was born to Jeff and Kara Spieler, Marcus on Sunday July 21 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars
Bethany Rassel donated her Locks of Love recently. Ann Schmillen from the Cutting Company cut her locks.
