110 Years Ago – 1912
Mr. & Mrs. Fern Addy are moving into the Fred Collier home in Marcus today.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Cattle belonging to Eugene Weber were looking for water. Five of the animals fell into a well and drowned. The steers weighed close to 1100 lbs.
During the storm here Tuesday lightning struck the Farmers Elevator. Only damage reported was a few shingles being blown off.
Wrong orders given from the eastbound train Wednesday caused the head-on collision east of Cherokee with the westbound Clipper.
E.T. Sheppard, newly elected superintendent to the public school, was here Monday to attend the board meeting.
An eight-hour rain fell Monday to the relief of corn and probably can be a million-dollar rain.
More cream is the growing need if the Sjostrom Brothers at there local cream and butter plant.
85 Years Ago -1937
Lee Grauer, Lovell Simons, and Nace Collins are farmers building combination corncribs and granaries.
Ray Walsh, rural mail carrier, is driving a new Plymouth coach purchased from C.W. Dorr.
Lucella Kahl began duties as a waitress in the Marcus Café Wednesday morning.
80 Years Ago – 1942
The American Legion expressed its wish to re-organize a Boy Scout troop in Marcus. Dr. Hobson has indicated his willingness to serve as scoutmaster and Lowell Nelson has granted his assistance to Dr. Hobson.
Mrs. Sina Bork brought a prize dahlia, measuring 20 inches in circumference and 8.5 inches in diameter to the News Office.
Irene’s Hamburger Shop opened for business Wednesday in the Seegar building.
75 Years Ago -1947
Lynn Simons and Donald Peters received serious injuries in a car motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon near Cherokee. Both boys received broken legs as well as other bruises and injuries.
Edwin Benson, 61, of Meriden, who died Monday following a car-train crash in Sweden in which his brother Joel, 58, of Cherokee was killed, was at one time a farmer in this community,
Paul McClintock, six-year-old son of Mrs. Minnie McClintock, fell last week while playing and broke a bone in his elbow. Paul will wear a cast on his arm for the next 3 weeks.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Bill Walton announced that he will close his Shoe Repair Shop August 9 instead of September 1.
The Marcus Lumber Company crew is tearing the front end of the company’s office building, preliminary to constructing a new modern front.
Fred Anderson, formerly of Cleghorn, has taken over the East Side service station and is now operating it under the name of Anderson’s East Side Service.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Alesch of Marcus announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Marilyn Phyllis, to William Hays Betz, son of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Hays Betz.
Earnest Nelson has bought the L.P. Fitzgerald residence property in south Marcus, which the Fitzgerald vacated upon the completion of their new home
Nathan Rowen has purchased the Ed Strief Jr. residence property four blocks southeast of the bank corner in Marcus and the family will soon move from their present basement home.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Juhl announce the engagement of their daughter, Carolyn Lee, to Clifton Albrecht, son of Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Albecht of Odeboldt.
John Haywood of Pasadena, CA died suddenly while on a vacation trip. He was the son of the late Mrs. Lillian Haywood and was raised in Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Virgil Kirchoff of Bellville, Ill. Are parents of a son born Saturday, July 28. Grandparents are Mr. & Mrs. Lester Kirchoff of Cleghorn

Rose Galles resumed her duties at Nagel’s Apparel Monday after two months of recuperation from surgery.
Mr. 7 Mrs. Paul Arndt announces the arrival of their first child, a son, born Monday, July 31.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Bolton are flying to Jacksonville, FL to be guests of their son Mike, of the U.S. navy aboard Aircraft Carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Ben Beck, the oldest resident in Marcus, is 96 years young today, August 3. Mr. Beck resides at home with his daughter, Bernice Beck.
The First Church of Christ in Cherokee was the setting for the July 15th wedding of Diana Jean Skaggs and James William Johnson.
Niels Pallesen, 72, of Marcus died suddenly Thursday evening at his home, his death being the result of a heart attack.
30 Years Ago –1977
Brian Zimmerman of Fairfield left for his home Friday after spending the past two weeks in the home of his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Schlenger.
Mrs. Margaret Meehan spent the past two weeks in Minneapolis in the Dennis George home helping care for her new grandson, Dennis Charles.
Mrs. Vera Barnes, 73, of Marcus passed away Thursday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee after a brief illness.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Farmers State Bank would like to announce the recent promotion of Dave Strautz to assistant vice president of the bank.
Charles Beaton, general manager of Farmers Cooperative Elevator, was honored recently by Land O’Lakes Ag Service. He received a gold watch for 25 years for service to Midwestern farms through the cooperative system.
About 50 relatives attended a college graduation party for Lorna Leavitt at the Art Hulstein residence in Orange City on Saturday.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Larrabee will celebrate their Centennial from August 7-9 with a huge assortment of activities that promises to entertain even the most discriminating.
Dominic Wibe, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Wibe, was transferred from Lt. Lewis, Washington State to Ft. Ord, CA.
30 Years Ago – 1992
On Friday, August 7 the family of Melvin and Margaret Dorr will be hosting an open house celebrating their 50 year ownership of the farm now know as Pine Grove.
Casey’s General Store has finished its overhaul with the new over pump canopy. That in addition to the enlargement of drive-in parking area. Kent Carlson Construction of Marcus did the construction. Greeting you as you walk in the door to inspect the new changes at the store will be Carol Huffman, Peg Hohbach, Judy Claussen and Ada Carter.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Steve Utesch, MMC wrestling coach, was presented the most dedicated coach award for his wrestling program. They had an 8-3-1 record this past season. Miranda Boekhout, 11 of Marcus qualified for the National Track and Field meet at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, July 24.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Matt and Jennifer Rosener are the proud to announce the birth of their first child. Joseph Michael, born July 15 at Mercy Medical Hospital in Council Bluffs. Grandparents are Joe and Barb Rosener of Marcus.
Mary Annette Olson, 55, of Mount Vernon Washington died July 18, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mary is survived by Husband Doug and 2 sisters and 1 brother.
