Personal Mention
The last week of school arrived! We had Meals on Wheels for two weeks and the last Monday of delivering, I thought I heard voices coming from across the street where we were leaving a meal. Yes, it was the Mark Brighton Elementary Track Meet and I had missed it this year! Monday was a good day for it as the next two days were cold and rainy.
Tuesday was the day that the two teachers, Laurie Lang (34 years) from R-U and Julie Letsche (37 years) from Marcus were having retirement parties from 4-6 p.m. Lang’s was held in Middle School Media Center and Letsche’s was in the Commons.
On Wednesday rain was predicted off and on for the day. That was the day at 10:30 a.m. that the groundbreaking for the new elementary school and high school upgrades was to take place. Supt. Dan Barkel spoke to the group that had come to the groundbreaking about the future plans. Then it was time for the shovels to “break the dirt”! After the adults were done, some students took to the shovels to try groundbreaking, also! The project will take a year and a half for completion and then the current elementary school will be demolished.
Wednesday was also the day that the kids got out early for this school year. For some, it might not be long before they are in the Extended School Year that MMCRU is offering. Remsen-Union has no teacher for this ESY so Remsen students will be transported to Marcus for the June and July sessions.
Long-time Marcus citizen, Nancy Hier passed away May 15, 2022 and her funeral will be on Thursday, June 2, 2022.at Grace United Methodist Church at Marcus. Rest in peace, Nancy until we meet again.
An elementary school in Texas was the place where 19 4th grade children and 2 teachers were killed by an 18 year-old that locked himself in their room and let his gun go off. Now there is all kinds of talk about how late the police were in arriving and just why they didn’t get into the room sooner than they did. The shooter was shot dead by a police officer.
The day of the shooting, he had other plans other than going to his school. At 11:28 a.m. his truck was slammed into a ditch behind an elementary school and Ramos jumped out carrying an AR-15-style rifle. Five minutes later he opened an outside door (that was not locked but propped open) and went to the fourth grade room where he killed 19 students and 2 teachers. It was not until 12:58 p.m. that it was announced that Ramos had been killed by the police. A half hour before he did the shooting, he sent three private messages on Facebook that he was going to shoot his grandmother, then he had shot her, and finally he was going to shoot up an elementary school. At first people said that they never knew him to have any criminal or mental problems and he never really bothered anyone. Now some of the students his age are coming up with just how they had seen him a loner that had probably been bullied earlier in his life.
Texas is lenient on gun laws. Salvador Ramos, 18, legally bought the rifle and a second one like it the week before just after his birthday on May 16. It is hard to believe that an 18 year old would want two of these guns that he chose to buy. Now, 19 children were killed along with 2 teachers and leaving the kids that survived, with problems all their lifetime.
Do you believe you can die from a Broken Heart? Two days after one of the teachers had been shot to death, her husband died of a heart attack. Could a Broken Heart have caused the heart attack? A recent article reported that heart attack symptoms can arise when the coronary arteries are clear. In some of these cases, broken heart syndrome may be to blame. It is also known as takotsubo syndrome or stress cardiomyopahty, this uncommon condition usually results from severe emotional or physical stress, such as from the death of a loved one, a serious illness or surgery, or a natural disaster. Other possible triggers include a fierce argument, financial loss, intense fear of (in rare cases) even happy emotional events, such as a wedding or surprise party.
Could this have been the reason the teacher’s husband had a heart attack and died? I had two friends that after her husband died, she died 10 days later. I do believe she died from a broken heart.
Many years ago, we had two geese at the pasture. The gander was always finding a way to escape to greener places. One day he was hit by a car at the end of the street. It was five days later that the goose was found dead in the pasture. Sounds strange, doesn’t it, but some animals could have the same feelings as humans.
I went to make instant potatoes the other night and found I didn’t have any milk. The package did say some “milk”. I had buttermilk and sour cream, but they wouldn’t work. They I saw a partially Cool Whip. I carefully blended it in with the warm water and found that it worked! The two that ate the mashed potatoes didn’t know anything about the substitution!
I’m cutting this short so perhaps one of the many articles that there hasn’t been room for, can find a place. Remember in your thoughts and prayers those who have lost loved ones to death and their lives have been changed because of this, have health problems with some being terminal, are struggling to make ends meet in spite of having a job, encourage those not working to find a job, be with those in Uvalde, Texas as well as other places where a shooting rampage has taken place, and help those who are still distanced from family and friends to build a bridge instead of a wall.
I will leave you with this: An unspoken compliment is like a wrapped gift not given.
