110 Years Ago – 1912
Miss Franck of Sioux City is the new stenographer at the Wixcel Co.
The new lumber company owned by V. Sjostrom went out of existence last Saturday when he sold the business and stock to the other three lumber companies here.
Ed Olson sold his shoe shop here to A. Kefflin of Sioux City. Mr. Keflin took possession and Ed returned to Sioux City to reside.
105 Years Ago – 1917
The first street concert of the season by the Marcus band will be given next Saturday evening under the direction of Ellis Redell of oakland, CA a former orchestra leader.
Many farmers are shelling and disposing of corn which is selling at a very favorable proce.
C.E. Anderson has opened a cream station in the Peters building and will buy cream for the Hanford Company.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Morrissey and Stein of Sioux City took possession of the Marcus Cafe May 1. Mr. & Mrs. J.H. Brownmiller, former proprietors, may return to their old home at Pierson.
The site of the playground in Radcliffe’s addition is being prepated by farmers, contrators and members of the Better Marcus Club this week.
Ellen Toner became the bride of Aloysious Staver of Quimby at 8:00 Tuesday Morning in Holy Name Church.
Marjorie Means is among the nurses who will complete their courses at St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City this week. Miss Means is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Means.

A electiic storm struck Marcus Wednesday morning breaking fflass on the east side of the Greenhous. Gardens were seriously damaged and telephone lines torn down.
Lorna Specht as Valedictorian and PAul Norris as salutatorian, won honors in the senior class of Marcus high school this year at teh annual commencement exercises.
Jim Smith, with an alto saxophone solo, and th emixed chorus of Marcus puplic school won first place in the state music contest at Spencer last weekend.
75 Years Ago -1947
When authorites opened an ordinary looking black bag Saturday which Emanuel Hurd had placed under his hospital bed at Alta, they were astounded by discovering its contents to be $58,000 in cash and securities.
Earl Gill will start his vacation from his duties as rural mail carrier Saturday. Mr. & Mrs. Gill and son Wilfred will leave on tat day for a trip through Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.
Mark Brancroft was elected commander of F.I. Goodburn post of the American Legion at Monday evenings meeting.
Mr. & Mrs. A.L. Pitts entertained at dinner in their hom eSunday evening in honor of the second birthday of their grandson, Kenny Ogren.

Sgt. James Whited was listed in Wednesday’s press dispatches as on of 3,054 army combat veterans which arrived in San Francisco, CA from Korea Tuesday.
Mr. & Mrs.George Rabel returned home on Monday from a week’s vacation trrip through Iowa and Minnesota.
Pfc. Richard Garvin, son of Mr. & Mrs. Vincent Garvin of Marcus, received extensive injuries on Thursday morning of the last week when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his father’s car enroute to Marcus from Sioxu City.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Sneak thieves pilfered $33.78 in change from the office of Sand Seed Service some time Friday night. Enterance was gained by opening a window,
Mr. 7 Mrs. Hans Meehan announce the arrival of a daughter, Kathleen Ann, born May 13.
Mr. & Mrs. leonard Bindner were honored Saunday evening, May 19 by a number of relatives on their 15th wedding anniversary.

Vanna Joy Marquis, daughter of Col. & MRs. Vance Marquis, had the misfortune of breaking two bones in her left arm Thursday.
Robert Block was revealed as Valedictorian of the holy Name graduating class at its commencement exercies. He is the son of Henry Block of Marcus.
55 Years Ago – 1967
The Marcus fire Department was called to the Carroll Kuehn farm Sunday afternoon by a chimney fire. No damage was done.
Mrs. Carlyle Peterson has accepted the position of city clerk, following the resignation of Ray Quirin because of ill health. Mrs. Peterson had been employed at the Marcus school.
David Nestor reveived the $100 Gund cash award. This award is given to the student with the highest academic average of the graduating class.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Gary Rasmussen is the proud owner of a new Volkswagon Beetle as the result of winnthe the championship match on the 15th annual Channel 9 Big Bowl last Saturday.
Patricia Hirschman, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Hirschman, and Ray Sivesind, son of Mr. & MRs. Joe Sivesind of O’Neil, Ne, were married on May 13 at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.
Mr. & Mrs. Denny Horstman are parents of their first child Jennifer Lea born Tuesday, May 16.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Dr. And Mrs. C.E. Nims of Westbro, Mo. are proud to announce the birth of a baby girl on May 23. She has been named Nancy Marie and has a brother Michael to welcome her home.
Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Mayer hosted a Pork Barbecue for friends and neighbors at their farm Sunday evening in honor of their sons, John and Bill, who graduated from college over the weekend.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Pat Collins caught a 7 pound walleye at Storm Lake while Larry Weber, the other fisherman with Pat, reported they both caught their limits.
M. Jeannine Dunn, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Dunn, Marcus, and a student at Morningside College, received a psychology award from the college.
1982 Cheerleaders will be Sally Alesch, Peg Bierman, Rhonda Reuter, Brenda Sand, Susie Sand and Dayna Smith.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Kathy Wankum, math teacher, is featured in the Spotlight on Marcus Teachers.
The former Gates building on the corner of Main and Cedar Street has been purchased by Linda Rassmussen and has made it into a liquor store.
Marc and Susan Bies of Grundy Center, are proud to announce the arrival of their son, Joshua Joseph who was born on May 11.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Michael Kundson, a 1980 graduate of Marcus Community High School, received his MD Ph.D. at the University of Iowa.
Leo Unkur has joined the Hesse Chevrolet Sales Staff.
Mira Klingenberg was awarded a BS nursing degree at Briar cliff with the distinction of “summa Cum Laude”
25 Years Ago – 1997
Jesse Pick, son of Gary and Linda Pick of Marcus has been accepted in the Agri Business Technology Program for the fall semester at Iowa Lakes Community College.
Ed and Dorothy Schnoes will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on June 8, with a Mass at Holy Name followed by an open house in the church hall. Ed and Dorothy were married on June 19, 1947 at Maryhill Visitation Church by Rev. J.P. Hausman.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Long Time teacher Martha Heser was honored on Sunday with a farewell reception at MMC. She started teaching forty four years ago. A postage stamp cost 3 cents and the minimum wage was only $1.00 when Martha taught her first class in the then Marcus Community School District in 1958.
Jack and Lorraine Rawson of Pierson, and Patrick and Claudette Staab of Marcus, announce the engagement of their children Laura and Michael. A June 28 wedding is planned at Holy Name Church.
