Howard Allen and Phillip Florine of Cleghorn went to Omaha the first part of the week to get their new cars.
Walter E. Wiese of Meriden offers a Model T-35, 5 passenger Torpedo Touring Cutting car with regular equipment for $1,250.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Dan Sims sold 39 head of steers which brought $11.75 per hundred, the highest price of any steers ever sold in Marcus.
Norman Smith bought a new Overland car in Sioux City Friday.
Louis Pingel has accepted a position in a Paullina garage and is now on duty there.
Many farmers are shelling and disposing of corn which is selling at a very favorable price.
C.E. Anderson has opened a cream station in the Peters building and will buy cream for the Hanford company.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Arnold Wittkopp wan first place in the essay contest on the Constitution sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
Alex Olson of Meriden won the Ford car Thursday evening given by the Better Marcus club in connection with the playground improvement plan.
Helen Roberts of Lewis, Iowa has opened a beauty shop in the Countryman barbershop.
John Sand returned Wednesday from St. Mary’s hospital at Rochester where he underwent an operation.
85 Years Ago -1937
Mrs. E. J. Schumaker, mother of Kenneth Schumaker who is employed in the Farmers State Bank, passed away Saturday evening in the hospital at Long Beach, CA.
A large group of friends surprised Norman Smith on his birthday anniversary Saturday evening.
Elizabeth Delaney was surprised Wednesday evening when a group of 12 young people gathered in the Ed Delaney home for her birthday.
80 Years Ago – 1942
The floor in the building used for seed storage room by John Sand collapsed Tuesday morning and many bags of soybeans seed and corn seed dropped to the basement.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Dunn received a cablegram from their sons, Delmar and Cecil Dunn, from Ireland after not hearing from them for several weeks.
James Smith and LeRoy Mossman will enter sub-state music contest at LeMars April 10 with solo numbers.
75 Years Ago -1947
M. W. McCoy, manager of the Dorr Hatchery, reports that he is working on a new angle of their poultry improvement plan, and has finally managed to produce a baby chick, for the fryer trade, with four drumsticks and two wings.
A rousing Charivari, surprising Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Schmillen, newlyweds, was held Wednesday evening in the home of the bridegroom parents, Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Schmillen.
Mrs. Ben Saner served a lunch of ice cream and cookies to members of the first grade class in Marcus public school in honor of the 7th birthday of her son. Eugene.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mrs. Fred Mossman had accepted the position as librarian of the Marcus public library, made vacant by the resignation of Mrs. Camilla Ament.
Sand Seed Service charted a plane Sunday and flew part of their employees over the flood district in the Sioux City territory. Those making the trip were Merle Sand, Kenneth Pallesen, Paul Pedersen, Bob Sand, Bill Horstman, Paul Sand, Jeanne Meehan, Mr. Ray Sand and Lawrence Swanson.
Jack Reynolds and Percy Means, employees of the Marcus Lumber, were in Marshalltown last week attending the annual school put on by the Lennox Furnace Company.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Mr. & Mrs. Edger Roseen announce the birth of a son born April 8 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee. He has been named Douglas Edgar.
Dale Spieler, sophomore at Holy Name School, was named Outstanding Boy for 1956-57 by the Legion.
Mrs. James Mulvany, who has been residing in LeMars since January, left Sunday morning via plane from Omaha and arrived in Frankfurt Germany where she was united with her husband Pfc. James Mulvany.
Chief of Police Nile Ebely will be armed with a new and modern police car in the new future. The town purchased the car from Nagle Chevrolet, where the additional police equipment is being installed.
60 Years Ago – 1962
The Meehan Produce has moved to the Carl Klingborg building diagonally across the corner from the Municipal building. The building has been located in the former Carl Dorr building which is to razed to make room for the new Community Medical Center.
The work of razing or moving two long storage building at the Marcus Lumber Company is nearly completed, and with it some landmarks of the community are gone. Parts of the structures date back to the early days, and many of the homes and farm buildings of the community passed through them in the form of boards and timbers.
55 Years Ago – 1967
The Marcus Fire Department committee has accepted the bid of Jorgensen Brothers of Marcus for the new van for its rescue squad.
Mr. & Mrs. Merle Sand were honored at a dinner at the Weaside Wednesday evening on their 28th wedding anniversary.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mrs. Henerietta Tentinger was honored on her birthday by her sisters and several ladies from the Remsen area. The guests arrived during the afternoon and remained with Mrs. Tentinger for a birthday supper.
45 Years Ago – 1977
King and Queen candidates for this year Prom King and Queen are Kevin Schmillen, Steve Snyder, Steve Taylor, Kris Hueser, Tammy Miller & Barb Petersen.
Blaine Case, son of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Case of rural Marcus, will ride in the Indiana University Little 500 bicycle race on Saturday, April 30.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Jim Stowater bagged a huge 23-lb. Turkey while hunting during the spring turkey season here in Iowa.
Wade Nielsen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jim Nielsen, made a “Hole in One” on the No. 4, 195 yard hole using a 3 wood at the Marcus Golf Course.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Rod Ebert, Kim Carlson, Ray Addy and Rick Dreckman took a few days off to see the basketball tourney in New Orleans recently.
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Brady returned home last week after spending a week in the Scott Brady home at Charleston, SC.
30 Years Ago – 1992
An open house honoring Mr. & Mrs. Aaron Waller on their 50th Anniversary will be held Sunday May 3 at the Mr. Pleasant Presbyterian Church in Marcus.
A reception honoring Mary Schulte on her 90th birthday was held on Saturday, April 18 at the Marcus Golf Course. Their children and spouses gave the reception.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Ryan Petersen, Andy Busch and Lisa Plueger are featured in Focus: Class of “97. All plan to further their education.
Mariran Rickert, a resident in Heartland Care Center, won a quacking duck and a jar of Easter eggs, donated by Kurt and Nick Jones. She had the closest guess as to the number of eggs in the jar.
20 Years Ago – 2002
On Saturday evening at the MMC gym Austin Paradise was crowned the Prom King and Sarah Utesch was crowned the Prom Queen before a large crowd of spectators.
