110 Years Ago – 1912
At a meeting held in the Center school in Liberty township last week, it was voted by the citizens to spend $2,000 in erecting a new school.
105 Years Ago – 1917
At a meeting of the members of the Marcus band, held last Friday evening, it was voted to employ Ellis Redel of Sioux City as leader of the band during the coming season, and his salary was fixed at forty dollars per month.
Work was completed last Tuesday in wrecking the old mill. Nearly all of the lumber was sold to local parties. The machinery was shipped to Sioux City.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Chris Pingel, living in Liberty township, suffered a bad fire loss last Wednesday night. His home and nearly all household goods were destroyed in the blaze.
Miss Alice Johnson, daughter of Mrs. P.J. Johnson and George W Neir, son of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Neir, were united in marriage Saturday morning in the Carmel Lutheran parsonage with Rev. D. N. Anderson officiating.
85 Years Ago -1937
Anticipating the early paving of Main Street this spring, the Marcus council passed Ordinance No. 145 on the fourth day of last November, requiring that all property owners on blocks to be paved should make water and sewer connections to their lot line within 30 days following the publication of the ordinance, in the event such connection had not previously been made.
Spring may have officially started at 6:45 p.m. last Saturday according to astronomers. But it got a terrific setback Wednesday when one of the worst blizzards of the year raged through the northwest Iowa, paralyzing traffic and hindering the means of communication.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Coach Birney’s Eagles have ended another successful season, winning nineteen out of twenty-three games during the season.
The Payroll Allotment Plan for the purchase of Defense Bonds was started this week by a committee of Marcus insurance men headed by Robert Roberts, local chairman.
75 Years Ago -1947
Albert Krause, 59, passed away on Thursday morning, March 20 at his farm home seven miles south of Marcus. Mr. Krause had been in ill health for some time.
A beautiful and impressive candlelight ceremony took place at eight o’clock Tuesday evening in the Church of Christ at Cleghorn when Iris Smith daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Darwin Smith of Cleghorn, became the bride of Lyle Schmillen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Schmillen of Marcus.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. & Mrs. William Collins received work this week from their daughter, Sister Mary Donard B.V.M. informing them that she was appointed to St. Eugene’s Convent in Chicago where she is teaching third grade.
Fire and water did considerable damage to the Emil Engelbrecht apartment and the Luxembourg Tavern at Remsen Saturday.
65 Years Ago – 1957
The people of the Marcus community will have a chance to examine one of the miracles of the electronic ages this Friday and Saturday when the Addy Electric holds an open house. Features of the two days will be a demonstration of the Hotpoint electronic oven.
If the main corner of the Marcus business section looks a little bare it is because of the disappearance of one of the street’s oldest “landmarks.” The clock which hung from the front of the Simons building.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Three Marcus girls were injured in varying degrees last Friday afternoon, and the 1955 Chevrolet they were in was demolished in a one car accident. Most seriously injured was Sandra Dorr, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Dale Dorr, Sandra’s sister Linda, and Lynn Rae daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lewis Rae.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Dean Sand, son of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Sand underwent a tonsillectomy Monday FVH.
Dr. & Mrs. Ray Drefke became the parents of their first child born Sunday, March 26 at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee. He has been named Brent Warren.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mrs. James Cronin was pleasantly surprised last Friday evening when her children and there families and others relatives dropped in to celebrate her birthday.
Jane Bird, Terri Rassel and Barb Prescott were all named to the Little Sioux Conference first team recently.
45 Years Ago – 1977

Members of the Marcus Economic Development Corporation join Coast to Coast promoters in a board cutting ceremony on the opening of the new Coast to Coast Store here in Marcus.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Mike Wankum, son of Mr. & Mrs. Don Wankum of Merrill, and grandson of Mrs. Ann Wankum of Marcus has been named to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.”
35 Years Ago – 1987
Chuck Schmillen of Schmllen Construction Co. swings the big payloader into position to dump one of many scoops loads of snow into a hauling truck to make Marcus streets possible following last week’s blizzard.
The Marvin Hanson Outstanding Athlete was presented to Bryan Case at the Marcus Winter Sports Banquet held in Holy Name Church basement.
30 Years Ago – 1992
The Roy Johnson Memorial Award was presented to Ron Schmillen. Ron has been a very active in helping to promote the fair for many years.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Erin Bindner of Marcus and Greg Schroeder of Oyens are planning a July 12th wedding in Marcus Holy Name.
MMC School Superintendent Frank Ashmore submitted his resignation to the school board on March 26.
