115 Years Ago – 1907
T.R. Fenton, a real estate and loan agent from Marcus offers the best cheap land in the country from $10 to $25 per acre.
110 Years Ago – 1912
Jenks and Grauer of Marcus and proprietors of Imperial Café here, have completed arrangements to open a café in Cleghorn, north of the Snyder Drug Store.
Joseph Metcalf sold 1,200 bushels of potatoes and received $1,200 for them. They filled two cars and were shipped to southern Iowa to be used for seed potatoes.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Fred Quirin returned Friday morning from Newton where he purchased a prize-winning Belgian stallion at $2,500.
Seven eclipses are to be witnessed from the plant Earth in 1917. Four of these will be of the sun and three will be of the moon.
An old time blizzard, unequalled velocity by a storm since ’88 struck this country early Sunday.
90 Years Ago – 1932
The fire causing $10,000 damage was fought five hours steady at Nagle Brothers produce Friday night.
Mrs. William Hoxie was pleasantly surprised on her 70th birthday Thursday when friends and neighbors came in.
Mr. & Mrs. Francis Swindle are the parents of an eight pound baby girl born January 23.
Dr. R. E. Dubois has moved his dental equipment from the rooms of the Lyric Theatre to the ones over the Farmers State Bank.
85 Years Ago -1937
L.C. Wagner of Remsen recently purchased the local J.P. Beck Company’s general store.
Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Smith are proud parents of a daughter born on Tuesday, February 2.
Lois Anderson entered sixth grade in the public school this week.
Dorothy Qurin, senior in Marcus high, was chosen as a delegate from this county by Daughters of American Revolution to attend a meeting in Des Moines in the near future.
The Aurelia-Marcus game played on the local floor Friday evening was on of the easiest games of the season for the Golden Eagles who won 38 – 13, using second stringers the last two quarters.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Peters and Mrs. Jay Peters escaped injury when their car upset near Meriden, while enroute to Cherokee, Tuesday.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Conrad Anderson accepted a position in Research Laboratory of Western Electric Company in Chicago.
Mr. & Mrs. Jay Peters and Wilmer Lenhoff returned Monday from a 25 day trip to California where they visited with David Peters at Santa Monica.
Peters Brothers installed a new fast battery charger. In most instances it is possible to charge a rundown battery in 30 minutes.
About 35 friends and relatives attended a linen shower held for Irma Juhl in the Donald Gray home Sunday.
75 Years Ago -1947
Elmer Olson, who suffered a broken vertebrae in his neck in an accident at the intersection where the Community Co-op Oil Company is located, is still in the St. Joseph hospital at Sioux City. He expects to be home in a few days but will have to wear a cast on his neck for several weeks.
Viola Pingel, a Marcus teacher, and Elmer Kroeger were married Saturday afternoon, February 1st in Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus. They will be at home on a farm southeast of Remsen after March 1st.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Following the fire in which the Lynic Theatre was destroyed, along with the household goods and personal possessions of the Ed Delaney family. Vic Straub of Straub’s Lockers placed a receptacle in his business place and marked it for the Delaney family. His customers responded generously and Wednesday morning Mr. Straub turned over $110 to Mr. Delaney.
More than one hundred relatives and friends gathered in the municipal Building in Marcus Sunday noon to honor Mr. & Mrs. Bill miller of Cleghorn on their silver wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Harm Seggerman, Jr., entertained a dinner Sunday in honor of their daughter, Joyce, who was baptized Sunday at Peace Lutheran church.
65 Years Ago – 1957
James Jones suffered a heart attack while in the Hatz locker plant. Dr. Hayden was called and he was taken to the hospital immediately.
The Ray Sand family, which has been living in Phoenix, AZ for several years will return to Marcus soon, where Ray will resume active partnership in Sands Seed Service.
Tom Carney Jr., bought the Kracke house which was sold at public auction here last Saturday. The property bought $2,400.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Vernon Ebert will receive his Bachlor of Science degree in chemical engineering a the State University of Iowa’s mid winter commencements.
Dick Garvin and Bob Garvin will hold a combination farm sale at the formers place northeast of Marcus next Tuesday. To be sold are Bob’s farm machinery and Dick’s machinery, stock and feed and grain.
Peace Ladies Aid observed its 17th Anniversary Sunday, January 28. A potluck dinner was served at the church parlors. Pastor Schutz acted as master of ceremonies. A welcome was given by Grace Dorr, president of the Aid.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Kauffman became the parents of a 7 lb. 8 oz. daughter, born Monday, January 23, at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee.
Bill Miller competed in the National Western Livestock Show the week of January 13-21 in Denver, CO. bill received a white ribbon in recognition of his placing his shorthorn steer as third in a field of thirty-four
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Hueser moved into their new home last Wednesday which they purchased form Mrs. Elmer Donner. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Letsche and family moved into the Herman Hueser farm home.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Jane Ann Carey has been named Marcus high school’s Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow for 1972.
Jean Haines, bride-to-be of Dennis Means, was honored at an open shower Sunday, January 30 at Holy Name Hall.
Twenty-six cars ground it out on a rough track Monday night at the annual Pinewood Derby held at Holy Name gym. It was a grueling contest with Mike Letner’s car finally coming in first. Coming in second was Keith Ebert and James Mayer came in third.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Jim Gregg and Norma Rupp, both of Cherokee, announce the purchase recently of the Marcus Hardware building from Mervyl Olson, also of Cherokee. The building will house a branch of Motor Parts Sales Co. The store will be managed by Doug Rowher of Paullina. Doug will move here to Marcus as soon as repairs begin on the building.
Miss Lynn Hoefling, daughter of the James Hoefling of rural Marcus has been selected for a good Citizen award sponsored by Pilot rock chapter DAR. An award tea to be held on February 5 in the Sanford museum will honor Lynn, who represents the Marcus Community School.
40 Years Ago – 1982
The Marcus High School Speech Team won seven superior (I) ratings at District Large group contest at Cherokee on Saturday.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Juhl were pleasantly surprised Sunday when friends and family honored them on their 43rd wedding anniversary.
Patty Anderson and Jody Moser entertained a group of young folks for their birthdays Saturday evening in the Dale Wood home.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Jeannine and Bill Berger, rural Marcus will celebrate their silver wedding anniversary on February 1. The couple was married February 2 1962 at Grace United Methodist Church.
Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Mayer celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary Thursday, January 22.
Patrick Wolf, son of Mr. & Mrs. Emmet Wolf of Cleghorn, has been accepted into the Farming Equipment Mechanics Program for the fall quarter at Iowa Lakes Community College.
Loren Stowater accepted his award for 40 years of service from IPS in ceremonies Monday for his long career with Iowa Public Service.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Tim Bies of Marcus and Jane Fraser of Hebron, NE are planning a May 23 wedding in Bishop Marty Chapel at Mt. Marty College. Both are senior nursing students there. They will be graduating in May.
Kelli Pitts, an eighth grader student at Meriden-Cleghorn won the spelling bee there and will represent her school in the AEA 4 contest Saturday, February 15 at Sioux Center.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Mike and Matt Hueser, Andy Hanson, Doug Steward, and Tim Smith journeyed to Sioux City to hear the former Notre Dame football coach.
During “Pack the Pit” night the MMC boys basketball team defeated the Sgt. Bluff Warriors 68-63.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Mildred Mame Galvin born at Marcus on January 30,1902, celebrated her 100th birthday. Mildred married Art Nielsen in October 1928.
Tory Johnson is pictured looking over the shelves of books at the MMC Primary Library to locate his favorite Harry Potter book. The books are a memorial gift from the Johnson family.
