125 Years Ago – 1896
Mr. and Mrs. James Walsh of our city are the parents of a bouncing baby girl born last week.
Weart and Lysaght have made some nice improvements on their office building here.
I.M. Jackson was called to Nebraska due to the illness of his aged mother.
120 Years Ago – 1901
Marcus is to have a telephone exchange here. The fee will be $1.50 for a business phone and $1.00 for a private residence. There are already over 50 subscribers.
Some corn is being cribbed and huskers are making $10 to $14 per week.
George H, Cargin of Wells, NY has purchased R.W. Steen’s interest in the blacksmith shop of McIntosh and Steen here. It is now the McIntosh and Cargin Shop.
115 Years Ago – 1906
The Marcus News office has been removed from the post office building and their new phone number is 98.
Marcus has a lot of “whiz wagons”. There are 5 or more autos on Main Street at one time.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Many of the Marcus Public high school boys are spending their “ happy hours” at MHS after dismissal at 3:45 p.m.
Nine friends of I.M. Jackson, an old pioneer of Marcus called on him for an evening of remembering the early days of Marcus. Louis Gund, Ed Rose, Ben Radcliffe and John Jungers, were among them.
Ben Hully and crew completed the carpenter work on the new residence in Amherst Twp. for the Ernest Wells family. It is 28X30 with 9 rooms including a bath, 2 porches and an 8 feet deep full basement.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Mr. and Mrs. Orrin Shoemaker and family returned to their Fielding home after visiting her family, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick McDonald at Wessington Springs, SD.
S.M. Wixcel has the contract for redecorating the interior of the Christian Church in Cleghorn. He has started the work.
More than 50 transient corn pickers spent time at the Marcus Hotel last week. Mrs. W. H. Leonard is the landlady here.
90 Years Ago – 1931
“Henry’s Wedding” will be presented by 125 local people November 5 and 6 in the high school auditorium, sponsored by the Amerian Legion. Ray Peters, Mrs. Roy Williams, Howard Flanagan, Norma Turner, Mrs. Hope Niemann and Carl Reed will play leading roles.
The Marcus Exchange Bank building was sold to W.E. Simons for $19,771.91. (It is the current Marcus News Building).
Mr. and Mrs. Gideon Berendes are the parents of a son born Sunday.
85 Years Ago -1936
Marcus Eagles upset Cleghorn 7-6 for the first time in five years. Marcus has a 4-1 record.
The Lone Eagle station at the Marcus mile corner, is being raised to the level of the new pavement #5.
Mr. and Mrs. Delbert McGee of Amherst Twp. are the parents of a baby girl October 22 and named Barbara Kay
80 Years Ago – 1941
Jessie and Lyle McIntosh of Cleghorn departed for Burbank, Ca. for the winter
Jimmie Smith attended homecoming activities at Creighton University in Omaha and was a guest of his cousin, Charles Evans, a student at Creighton.
Mr. and Mrs. Ole Bakkene moved to Salix and Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Edsall moved into the home they vacated, the Mrs. Katherine Walsh home. Ole was a barber in Marcus and the Edsalls are teachers in Marcus Public School.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Straub and family moved into the S.M. Wixcel resident which they purchased as the Wixcels moved to Waterloo.
75 Years Ago -1946
Corn picking and bean combining are being held up in this area due to the wet weather. High winds have also blown down some corn. Moisture content is in the high twenties making it too high to crib.
James M. Powell, 66, a retired Illinois Central Railroad worker, had twice been stationed in Marcus. He passed away Wednesday, October 23 and was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Survivors include his wife, 3 daughters, two sons and a brother.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Jim Rae and Earl Devin returned home after several days of pheasnat hunting around Yankton, SD. They reported a successful trip. Mrs. Devin spent those days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Cunningham in Sioux City.
Mary Sand, who attends school at Carroll, spent the weekend in the parental John Sand home.
Pauline Witter was a weekend guest of Jean Lindeman in Waterloo. They attended homecoming at Cedar Falls Saturday.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Susan Hayward stars in “I’ll Cry Tomorrow” showing in the Marland Sunday and Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Gravenish are the parents of an 8 lb. 6 oz. daughter, born October 6th. She is named Virginia Lea and has 2 sisters and 3 brothers at home.
Harry Baumgardner and son advertise their barber business as open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday evenings.
A Galloping Breakfast was held at the Mt. Pleasant Church Thursday morning. The men and the women made it a huge success.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Katie Ernst and Clara Ricker were Friday afternoon visitors in the Gladys and Lyda Williams home.
Former area residents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bates, now of Whittier. CA, are visiting relatives and friends here.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Lee Garvin bought the Mrs. Lelia Ames residence at auction for $5, 000.
The Hoover Oil Company will open for business soon after November 1st, according to owner, Fred Hoover. He will handle Conoco products and offer tank wagon service.
Mrs. Donald Mc Queen and Nancy were Saturday afternoon callers in the Roger Leavitt home.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Blietz will observe their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, Nov 7th with an open house in Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus from 2- 4:00 p.m. Hosts are their daughters, Delma Wallin and Arlene Rubink.
Lawrence Rassell, 25, was killed when the truckload of cattle he was driving went out of control near Vermillion, SD. His brother, Charles, was in the sleeper and received serious injuries.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Mr. and Mrs. David Bolfik are the parents of a son born Oct. 11th, named Michael David. He has a sister, Debbie Sue, to welcome him home.
Randy Benton, a baritone saxophone student of Jerry Bertrand, has been selected as a member of the All-State Band.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Debby Urbach will hold an Open House of her “Headquarters” Beauty Shop at 105 N. Walnut, Nov. 4, 5,and 6.
A public auction will be held Sunday, November 8 of the Lauretta Nagle estate at 207 S. Ash Street in Marcus.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Little Kyle Wurth of Remsen is lucky to be alive. He fell into a wagon load of beans that were being emptied into a hopper. He was sucked under the beans and was not breathing and had turned blue when extricated from the beans. Dad did CPR and Kyle was rushed to the hospital via the Remsen Rescue Unit.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Marcus Alexander Sand was born Oct.11. He weighed 8 lbs., 12 1/2 oz. Parents are Tom and Laurie Sand and he has 2 sisters and a brother at home.
Michelle La Croix, of Jefferson, SD, bride-elect of Kevin Hueser, will be honored at a miscellaneous bridal shower Saturday, Nov. 2 in Marcus Holy Name Hall.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Juliann Renee Zook and Kirby Jo Hohbach were recently married in Trinity Lutheran church. They are making their home an a farm south of Marcus.
Stan and Joyce Nervig returned home Monday, Oct. 11 after an 11 day bus tour through the Carolinas.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Bart Alesch of MMC qualified for state as he placed 4th in cross country and the top seven placers go to State.
