115 Years Ago – 1915
A.H Dwight, prominent Marcus citizen died Tuesday morning, August 30 at the home of his son, Dr. Charles Dwight.
Will Woods has resigned his position in the telephone office and left Saturday for Ida Grove where both he and Mrs. Woods will have positions in the telephone exchange.
105 Years Ago – 1920
Beatrice Ferrin and George Anderson of Tilden township were married Tuesday, August 31 in Sioux City.
Lyle Gowan of Marcus, Francis Swindle of Cleghorn and John Dewar of Pilot township returned home from the state fair Sunday, having won the 5th place in the boys livestock judging contest.
The marriage of Elizabeth Pfeiffer and Patrick Brady was solemnized Tuesday morning August 24 at Holy Name Church, with Rev. Cooke officiating.
Mrs. John Carey received a message Tuesday announcing the passing of her father, Scott Zink, a former Marcus citizen, at his home in Elliott, ND
100 Years Ago – 1925
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Barnes were the instigators of a very happy affair last Sunday when 60 relatives gathered at the Tourist Club in Cherokee to celebrate jointly the birthday anniversary of Walter Bares and Bobby Pitts.
M.J. O’Brien, owner of the Red Mill Cafe, has leased the rooms in the First National Bank building which were used by the bank. The rooms are now being put in condition and Mr. O’Brien announced that he will move to his new quarter September 15.
C.D. Campbell of Miller SD, is now operating the Ed Jimmerson Pool Hall located in the Exchange Bank building.
95 Years Ago -1930
Mr. and Mrs. George Weimer celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at Riverside Park in Cherokee August 22. The Weimers have been residents of Cherokee County for 35 years..
Mr. and Mrs Floyd Moore are the parents of a girl born August 29. She has been named Bonnie Beatrice.
The public school resumed classes Monday and after registration it was found that 263 were enrolled. Of this number 98 are high school students.
90 Years Ago -1935
Dr. R. E. Simonsen recently completed a deal whereby he became the owner of the quarter section farm north of Marcus, owned by the Dunn estate and farmed by Walter Dunn.
Treinen and Riter, proprietors of the Marcus Cafe and managers of the Japanese Gardens, dissolved partnership Saturday when Roman Treinen bought out Eldon Riter’s share of the business.
85 Years Ago -1940
The marriage of Mayme Offerman and Leo Wagner was solemnized at five o’clock Monday morning, August 26 in St. Mary’s Catholic church in Remsen.
Many relatives and friends gathered at Holy Name church Friday morning to pay their last respects to John C. Toomey who spent 24 years in Marcus as a businessman.
80 Years Ago – 1945
S/Sgt. Cecil Dunn, son of MR. & Mrs. Walter Dunn, arrived home last week from Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Where he received an honorary discharge from the US Army August 28.
A pretty wedding was solemnized at the Carl Lutheran Church Saturday, September 1, when Paul Benson and Dorothy Winchester of LeMars, were united in marriage.
S/Sgt. Raymond Flanagan telephoned his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Flanagan, Saturday that he had arrived safely in the state from Italy where he had been the past 20 months.
75 Years Ago -1950
A beautiful wedding was solemnized Sunday, August 27 at the Mount Pleasant church when Donna Simons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Simons, and Johnson Leavitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Leavitt, were united in marriage.
Mr. & Mrs. Glen Cave are parents of a girl born Friday, August 26 at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. She has been named June Marie.
Mr. and Mrs. James French observed their 50th wedding anniversary at open house attended by 185 at their home Sun., August 20.
At a nuptial mass Saturday morning at Immaculate Conception Church in Sioux City LaVonne Erbs became the ride of Paul Ament.
70 Years Ago -1955
Glenn Barnes, 65, a native and for many years a resident of this community died suddenly last Friday evening at the home of his niece, Mrs. Delmar Drefke, two miles southwest of Marcus.
The marriage of Miss Jacqueline Bentz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clara Bird, all of Marcus, was solemnized on Tuesday morning August 30 at Holy Name church in Marcus. The double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. T.J. Fitzpatrick.
Eva Grauer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Grauer, appeared on the Horace Heidt show in the R.A. Long gymnasium in Longview, Wash., August 21.
Lt. Francis Johnson, USNR, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Johnson, has received his commission in the regular Navy while serving at Clarksville Base in Clarksville, Tenn.
65 Years Ago -1960
O.W. Ekbald of Covina, CA and former resident of Marcus, passed away Sunday, August 28.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kestel on August 30 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars, he has been named John Gerald.
The marriage of Rose Mary Nacke, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Knacke of Marcus, and Franklin Hogan of San Francisco, CA was solemnized on Saturday morning Sept 3 at St. Patrick’s church in Council Bluff.
Funeral service for Mrs. Estelle Christy White, 84 were held in the Nelson Funeral Home in Marcus Tuesday afternoon, Sept 6 with Rev. Kenneth Bressler officiating.
Announcement was made this week that the Sac City Hatchery here, taking possession September 1 The firm name of Marcus Chick “N” Feed has been adopted.
