100 Years Ago – 1925
The bankrupt show stock of J.A. Hamad was sold Monday afternoon by the auction route to Dr. R.E. Simonsen for $975.
James Crouch, an early settler of Cherokee County, passed away Friday in Cherokee.
O.W. Ekblad, manager of the Ekblad Theater, states that he is delighted with the way his regular Thursday night dances are being received and patronized. On an average of 150 couples attended each Thursday night dance.
90 Years Ago -1935
A casualty which might easily have proven to be more serious than it was occurred on Main Street Wednesday evening when a car belonging to Eli Grass crashed through one of the plate glass windows in front of the J.A. Michaelson grocery store.
The marriage of Miss Evelyn Kroll, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Krohl, of Crete, Nebraska, and Evertt Dorr, son of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Dorr, was solemnized Saturday, July 20 in the home of the bride’s aunt, Mrs. F. Pipec, in Omaha.
William Warburton passed away Saturday evening, July 14 at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Percy Trott, near Washta.
The George Sweet Company of 25 players attracted capacity crowds to the big tent theater at Sjostroms Park Monday – Wednesday evenings.

Work began this morning on a $5,000 improvement on the Methodist Church property in Marcus.
Phillip Toner was married Monday morning to Helen Devenne, of Des Moines, St. Mary’s Church in Des Moines.
Marshall Decorator will complete their work this redecorating the high school gymnasium.
Miss Cora Gund is remodeling the old barn on her property and a modern garage is constructed in the west part.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Edgar Roseen, S/C is spending a 30 day leave in the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Jake Roseen. Edgar has just returned from a years duty in Africa.
S/Sgt. Kenneth Birch left Sunday for Los Angeles, California, after a weeks visit in Marcus with relatives and friends.
75 Years Ago -1950
Dr. Thomas Knox, a native of Marcus and for many years a doctor here, passed away Wednesday at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
W.W. Bass has purchased the Evans Clothing building in Marcus recently vacated by the liquor store.
The basement has been excavated this week for the new Francis Treptow home in south Marcus.
A picnic was held Sunday, July 16 at the park in Cherokee honoring Jerry Schmillen, whose fourth birthday occurred on that day.

Miss Marguerite Meehan, 53, died Sunday night, July 31 at the home of her sister, Mrs. Herbert Hueser, of Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Nielsen entertained at a dinner Sunday in honor of their daughter, Susan Kay, who was baptized Sunday in Peace Lutheran Church.
A large group of relatives and friends gathered at Holy Name gymnasium Friday, July 22 to honor Miss Patricia Krohn, of Remsen, at a miscellaneous shower. She is the bride elect of Phil Brady.
The Garden Club met Tuesday, August 2 in the home of Mrs. Charles Christenson as assistant hostess.
One of the biggest annual event of the community of Marcus, the annual meeting of the shareholders of the Farmers Elevator, is slated for this Saturday evening. The meeting will be held in the driveway of the hugte new concrete building that the elevator built the past year. Chief items of business will be the report by manager Harodl Stenjes, of the cooperative operations during the past year and the election of officers. As in the past, free ice cream will be served to the partrons and friends of the cooperative and free tickets to the Marland theatre will be distributed.

Danny Schlenger, eight year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Schlenger, slipped and fell at the swimming pool, gashing the back of his head and requiring seven stitches.
Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Pearson are the parents of a daughter, Janet Lynn, born Sunday, July 24.
J.O. Whealon returned Saturday from Huntington Park, California, where he had been called by the illness and death of his sister, Mrs. Vivian M. Stone, 42.
Mr. & Mrs. Bernard Meyer, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, were surprised Saturday evening at the home of Mernard’s parents, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Meyer, when 35 relatives and friends gathered for a charivari.
Joan Eileen Rieper, of Marcus, will receive her diploma from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines Sunday, August 7.
Duane Beaton and children, of Phoenix, Arizona are spending two weeks visiting in the home of Duane’s Mother, Mrs. George Beaton, and with other relatives.

Mrs. E.J. Plummer, 82, passed away suddenly at her home Friday afternoon, July 30, following a brief ilness.
Marsh Synder underwent surgery Wednesday morning at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Sioux City.
A/2C James Clarkson left Sunday for McGuire, New Jersey, and left Tuesday from there for the Azores.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Sand are parents of a daughter born Wednesday, July 28 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mrs. Herbert Rohlfsen and her daughter, Carolyn, entertained at a picnic Sunday, honoring the birthdays of Mr. Rohlfsen and his brother, Stanley.

Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Anderson, of Marcus, are the parents of a six pound 15 ounce daughter, Cheri Ann, born Thursday, July 23.
Jeff, nine year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Larry Holmes, was injured Sunday afternoon at the Marcus swimming pool.
A miscellaneous shower honoring Nancy Bancroft was held at Faith Lutheran Church on July 23.
Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Lage were Sunday dinner guests in the Raymond Smith home at Correctionville.
Thirty eight relatives and friends gathered at the Marcus shelter house Sunday evening, July 26 for a pot luck supper honoring Hazel Harnack on her birthday.
50 Years Ago -1975
Mrs. Harm Seggerman, Jr. 58, of Marcus died July 22 at her home after a sudden illness.
Mr. & Mrs. John Dunn attended the Mayors’s Day, 12th Annual Rivercade as guests of the Port of Sioux City Committee last Wednesday.
The Marcus Midgets won the District tournament Tuesday evening by defeating Sgt. Bluff 4 to 2.
Angela Marie Koth, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George Koth, of Marcus became the bride of Ricky Joseph Konradi, son of Mr. & Mrs. Earl Konradi, of Storm Lake, on May 3 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Storm Lake.
Harld Reynolds, 61, of Marcus died July 24 at Veterans Hospital in Omaha after a short illness.
45 Years Ago – 1980
An open house in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Clinton Bunt on their 35th wedding anniversary will be held on August 3 at their home in Oyens.
Marcus High School, class of 1955 will hold its 25 year reunion Saturday evening, August 2, at the Marcus Golf Course.
Four person were injured, two seriously, in a two vehicle, smashup between a car and a pickup last Monday morning on a gravel road intersection one mile north and one east of Marcus.
Forrest Booth, of Marcus, has been admitted to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Sioux City.
Rusty Pallesen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Pallesen, of Marcus, is amount 25 students awarded University of Iowa Foundation Honors Scholarships for the first semester.
