105 Years Ago – 1920
Mr. & Mrs. Russel McConnell visited in Sioux City Sunday. Russel is now driving a new Oakland.
Mrs. James Meylor and daughter, Dorothy, returned from Sioux City Monday evening, where Dorothy had undergone an operation.
Mrs. Teresa McDonald, of Sioux City, came to Marcus Thursday to make her home with her son, Dr. McDonald who recently purchased the Charles Swindle residence.
100 Years Ago – 1925
A fine residence costing about 8,000 is being built by Jay Peters on his lot on Ash Street. The house is a brick construction will be two stories high and containing seven rooms.
Kennethy Lingston who recently purchased the Kay Theatre from G. A. Brink is improve the interior of the building.
90 Years Ago -1935
A mass meeting of the property owners and other interested citizens of Marcus has been called for this Thursday evening at the Lyric Theatre for the purpose of listening to a discussion of the question of paving a few blocks in the business section of Marcus.
George Bifler, employed at the Ray Carey farm, died at the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars Wednesday, June 19.
Roland Satterlee was injured in an automobile accident while returning home from Spirit Lake Monday evening. He received two fractured ribs and bruises when his car collided with a truck.
Tuesday the application of Mark Flanagan, for a position on the sate highway patrol, was temporarily approved.
85 Years Ago -1940
A very impressive wedding ceremony took place at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Methodist church when Vista Pepple, became the bride of Donald Holtzman.
Rev. Fred Jacobsen will be installed as paster of the Danish Lutheran church here at the regular service Sunday.
Dr. Joynt was elected president of the Marcus Rotary Club at a meeting of the newly elected board following the regular meeting of the Rotary Club.
A new barn with Golden style roof, is to be built on the farm owned by Mrs. George Johnson, three miles south of Marcus to replace the barn that burned May 4.
A very impressive wedding ceremony took place at 3:00 Wednesday at the Methodist Church, when Vesta Pepple, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. C.J. Pepple, became the bride of Donald Holtzman of Cumberland, Maryland.

80 Years Ago – 1945
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Gutenkauf left Friday to attend the commencement exercises at the University of Iowa Sunday when their son, Herman graduated from the college of medicine.
Sunday 44 relatives and friends came to the home of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Miller to help them celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
Capt. Thomas Birch recently was awarded the oak leaf cluster to the bronze star for gallantry in action December 13.
Miss Joyce Anderson is among the students registered for the first time at the Iowa State Teachers college for the summer quarter. Joyce is enrolled for the two year elementary course.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Peters have received word that their son in law. Robert Burnett, has been promoted from S/1c to Petty Officer 3/c. He is now a radio man in Admiral Halsey fleet serving in the South Pacific.
Mr. & Mrs. Gene Tschill announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Hope Marie, to Harris Parker, of a
Lakeland, Florida. The wedding will take place June 29 in Settle, Washington.

A pretty wedding was solemnized Wednesday, June 21 in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Art Beerman, when there daughter, Mary Ann, became the bride of Myle Kracke, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Kracke.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Stientjes are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday, June 20. She weighed 8 lbs. 12 ozs.
Delores Geringer, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Geringer of Marcus, became the bride of Clayton Johnson of Ruthton, Minnesota at Morningside Lutheran church in Sioux City on June 11.
The Rock Island Lumber Company is having a new office building built. The Carl Klingborg crew is doing the work.
Doris Brandt, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Adolph Brandt became the bride of Darrel Stroud of Quimby Sunday, June 4 at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Bonnie Meylor, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Meylor, and Donald Schmillen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Matt Schmillen spoke their wedding vows Tuesday morning, June 20, in Holy Name church.
70 Years Ago -1955
Clarence Beck, secretary of the Western Cherokee Mutual Insurance Association, took over his duties as president of the Marcus Rotary Club at Tuesday noon’s meeting.
C.G. Lighter of Ocheydan father of the editor of the Marcus News, barely escaped with his life in the $100,000 fire at Ocheydan the night of July 4.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Nielsen are the parents of a daughter born Friday, July 1 at Sacred Heart in LeMars. She weighted 10lbs 1 oz and has been named Susan Kay.
Mrs. Frank Leesly of Oto, 69, passed away Saturday, July 2 at St. Joseph Mercy hospital in Sioux City after a lingering illness. Mrs. Leesley was the mother of Mrs. Cyril Brownmiller.
A lovely church wedding took place Monday morning June 27, when Teresa Meylor and Richard Westcot exchanged vows in a double ring ceremony.
A party was held Thursday evening in the Grace Methodist in Grace Methodist church parlors in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Harold Schlenger on their 35th wedding anniversary.
Airman Second Class Richard Roberson was awarded a letter of appreciation by Colonel Windfield W. Scott. Maintenance and Supply group Commander in recognition of his choice as Crew Chief of the month in the 45th Flight Line Maintenance squadrons.

Rev. Roger Augustine, son of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Augustine of Remsen, will celebrate a Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving in St. Mary’s Church Sunday, July 10.
Mr. & Mrs. Leon Ebert are the parents of a 6 pound 2 ounces daughter born June 23, she has been named Carol Ann.
Carol Marie Stocks, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George Stocks of Minneapolis became the bride of Bernard Meyer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Meyer of Marcus, June 25, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Minneapolis.
Rick Ohlendorf, son of Mr. & Mrs. Eddie Ohlendorf, left last Wednesday for Lakeland, TX, where he entered the Air Force.
Mrs. DeWayne Schott returned form Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars where she had undergone surgery last week.

Karen Fischer, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Herman Fischer, was the winner of a free four day family vacation at Cherokee Village, Arkansas.
Mr. & Mrs. Dick Cannon left today for their new home at Yankton, SD.
The Women’s golf league will have a stek fry immediately following league Monday evening, July 12.
Mr. & Mrs. C.A. Brownmiller and Mrs. Vern Brownmiller attended the funeral of Jerry Clausen Wednesday afternoon.

Mrs. Charles Bass, 52, of Marcus passed away at an Omaha hospital Monday, June 29, following a long illness.
Hans Delaney and Herb Stowater were injured Tuesday morning when a scaffold collapsed in the wood shop of the Marcus Lumber company, where the men were working on a small building.
Ronnie Rupp has been promoted to SP/4 in the US Army.
Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Klemme, of Akron, announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Merie Katherine, to Ronald Joe Prunty, son of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Prunty of Marcus.

Mark Roethler has been appointed to the National Funeral Directors Association and the Iowa Funeral Directors Association.
Mrs. Albert Dorr underwent major surgery on Friday morning at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Glen Igou will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Saturday, July 5.
Relatives of Mr. & Mrs. Mark Carey met at their home Sunday evening to honor them with a housewarming.
A special meeting will be held July 9 at the Marland Theatre. The subject will be the Nursing home in Marcus.

Mrs. Lucille Schuttpelz is a patient at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.
The Marcus Merchants won two games from Alton on Friday by the scores of 5-3 and 12-4.
The Flanagan family reunion was held Sunday in the Lawrence Rupp home.
The Handcraft club will meet with Rose Lage Monday, July 7.
