105 Years Ago – 1920
The Honorable Nate Kendall candidate for governor, gave the address here Memorial Day.
W.H. Lykins, who has been in the employment of the Thompson Garage, will open a battery service station in the Wixcel Building on Main Street June 15.
H.E. McKeller, new superintendent of Marcus schools, and his wife have arrived form Winner, South Dakota and are occupying the residence vacated by Fred Knox.
Henry Dorr is erecting a new hog house which is 24 x 26 connected with it, on his place which was formerly the Hooper property.
100 Years Ago – 1925
Over 3,000 feet of underground cable is being laid by the West Iowa Telephone co. at a cost of $2,500.
Edwin Krekow of Marcus, is among those receiving a baseball award at Iowa State College this year.
Funeral Services for Gaberal Barr, a pioneer resident who passed away at Sacred Heart hospital on Memorial Day following an operation, were held in the Methodist Episcopal Church Monday afternoon.
Eleanor Tregoning has been honored twice this year by being elected president of Iowa League of Women’s Voters and the Sigma Delta Sorority of Iowa State College.
90 Years Ago -1935
James Evans, Janes Hogue, Gerald Rae and Jr. Treinen, Des Moines Register and Tribune carrier salesmen in Marcus, have been invited to attend the 6th Annual Carrier Salesman’s Convention in Des Moines, Monday, June 10.
W.E. Willey and family of Marcus plan to leave about the first of August for their new home in the northwest part of Montana. Mr. Willey’s interest in the auto salvage business has been sold to Alfre Nitzschke, who will conduct the business in partnership with Gene Tschill.
Dorothy Quirin, Verna Wulf, Elizabeth Wilcox, Darrell Miller and Walter Miller went to Iowa City Sunday to enter in the Annual “Cranium Derby” held there Monday and Tuesday.
Herman Gutenkaup, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Gutenkauf, was injured Tuesday morning when he was hit by an oil truck.
Vernon Lundell, son of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Lundell is ill with a siege of the measles.
John Delaney and G.W. Evans have the carpenters at work making improvements on their homes.

Margaret Rasmuss1en began work at the News office Monday morning as local page and society new editor to fill the position vacated by Norma Alesch, who resignation took effect today.
Marcus has the distinction of being the home of the only living Civil War Veterans in Cherokee County. N.T. Wells will be 95 his next birthday on the 25th of October.
The infant son of Mr. & Mrs. George Neir, born Wednesday, May 22 at the Sacred heart Hospital in LeMars, passed away Friday, May 24.
The members of the O.E.S. pleasantly surprised Mrs. Hattie Wilson Monday night in honor of her 80th birthday anniversary.
Following the service Sunday at the Christian Church Rev. and Mrs. N.W. Underwood and two children, will leave next Sunday for Laurens, Iowa, where he will begin his duties as pastor there.
Frank Sand, pioneer resident of Cherokee county and of the Marcus community, passed away at his home in Hollywood, CA on June 6.
A new Tudor Delux Ford sedan was delivered to Herb Hueser Tuesday by Peters Brothers Motor Company.
A dry week was enabled farmers to plow corn this week and some fields were getting quite grassy after the rains of last week. Some corn is now a foot high and warmer weather is in prospect.
Marcus met its first Red Cross Quota of $139.00 and the money has been sent to the county headquarters.

Mrs. Hattie Wilson was given a personal happy birthday greeting by about 60 friends that gathered at the Lloyd Barnes home Saturday afternoon during open house hours.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Birch, a daughter on Thursday, May 24 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Vernon Donner of Marcus, Iowa P-51 Mustang airplane mechanic in the 364th fighter Group, has been promoted from Sergeant to the grade of Staff Sergeant.
Lighting stuck a barn at the Ed Polson residence early Friday morning during an electrical storm. The Marcus fire department was called to the building which was only slightly damaged.
Those seeking renewals of gas ration during the past week found Marcus without an active organization and it was necessary to go directly to Cherokee to have this necessary function fulfilled.
The ground was broken for the erection of the Straub Locker Plant Monday morning and the work of excaating is progressing favorably.

Thomas Niemann, senior sociology major from Marcus, has been awarded a $25 savings bond in an advertising campaign contest.
Dean Barnes has been appointed a county youth assistant by State University College in Ames.
Frank Kline, a Marcus resident for 53 years, passed away at his home in Marcus Monday, June 5.
Sneak thieves broke into the Marcus oil and Supply Service Station here Monday evening and pilfered a small change box of $3.00 – $4.00 and a flashlight.
The Hobby Club met Tuesday evening, June 5 at the home of Jean 5 at the home of Kean Alesch.
Mr. & Mrs. Carroll entertained at dinner and supper in honor of their son, Douglas Allen, who was baptized Sunday.
Miss Bonnie Meylor, who will become the bride of Don Schmillen on June 20, was complimented at two showers this past week.

Mr. and Jacques Apel was graduated cum laude at St. Thomas Military Academy, St. Paul, Minnesota, with the military rank of captain.
Mr. & Mrs. Francis Bierman are the parents of a son born June 12 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
A birth shower was given Wednesday evening, June 8 at Holy Name Hall complimenting Mary Rassel.
Mr. & Mrs. Donald Simons entertained at a picnic supper at their home last Wednesday evening in honor of their son Marvin on his birthday.
Mr. & Mr.s Lovell Roberson have leased the Marshall building formerly occupied by the Soda Lunch, and will open a cafe there Monday morning.
Trinity Lutheran church at Marcus was the setting of a beautiful wedding Sunday afternoon, June 12, when Marjorie Krewkow became the bride of Roger Frisbie of Cherokee.
A new ranch style home is being built on the Stanley Birch Farm south of Cleghorn. The Herman Fischer crew is doing the work.

Jerry Golden, coach at Holy Name School, was named Commander of the Marcus Post of the American Legion at the organization’s election Monday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. Don Goodburn are the parents of a son born Monday, June 6, 1960 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mary Ellen book, “But With the Dawn, Rejoicing,” was placed second in the non fiction book division by the National Federation of Press Women, which convened in Topeka, Kansas.
Miss Carolyn Juhl has accepted a position at Nagle’s Apparel Shop.
Gene Oswald, son of Mr. & Mrs. Leo Oswald received his Bachelor of Science Degree at the graduation exercises at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 5
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Addy have just returned form Waterloo, where they were honored along with other DX distributors, for having completed 25 years of continuous marketing of DX Sunray Oil Co. Products.

Gary, Karen, and Nancy Fischer will be host and hostesses to an open house Sunday, June 20 at the Marcus Municipal Building honoring their parents Mr. & Mrs. Herman Fischer on their 25th wedding anniversary.
T/Sgt./Mr. Willis Neustrom, are the parents of a son born Saturday, June 12.
Dr. Michael Joynt, 82, of Marcus, died early Thursday evening. While the community knew that Dr. Joynt had been critical ill for several days, his death was still a shock.
Mrs. Emma Roberson says that the J&D Cafe is very likely to become a thing of the past. Recently she advertised it for sale due to health reasons and while she has had several prospective buyers inquire, the cafe is not yet sold.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Rupp, 82, died early Wednesday morning, June 3 in Cherokee after an extended illness.
Marcia Qualls of Marcus was named Miss Cherokee at the city’s Annual Beauty Pageant last Saturday night.
If all goes well, Kathy Bird, 17 years old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Bird of Marcus, will spend several weeks this summer in Yucatan, Mexico as a part of an exchange program developed by the “Partners of the Alliance” program sponsored by the State Department.
Clarence Sand, 77, a lifelong resident of the Marcus Community, passed away Friday, June 5 at a Sioux City hospital, following several month illness.

Paul Bird, 53, of Garden Grove, California passed away June 4 after an extended illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Edward Dunklaw of Houston, Texas became parents of a baby girl born June 9 at Methodist Hospital in Houston.
Thomas Olson, 79, of Alton passed away Tuesday morning, June 10 at the Orange City hospital.
Ken Rimmer of Cherokee announces the opening of a Montgomery Ward Catalog Store in Marcus.
Jim Nielsen is pleased to announce the hiring of Albert Nielsen as outside salesman for Cork and Jim’s Farm Service.

Jack Shea, Fire Chief, presented a 40 year plaque to veteran fire fighter Howard Peavy on his retirement from the department.
Brad Benton left early Friday morning for Des Moines, where he is attending the American Legion Boys State at Camp Dodge this week.
Randy and Joan Bunders of Cherokee, are the proud parents of their first child, a daughter born May 17.
Cathy Andrews, daughter of Margaret Andrews, recently received the St. Catherine Medal at the College of St. Mary’s in Omaha. This award is the highest honor given to an underclassman for outstanding academic spiritual and social achievement.
