105 Years Ago – 1920
Reverend F. Tuker of Erie, Illinois has accepted a call from the Marcus Church of Christ and will begin his ministry Sunday morning May 23.
100 Years Ago – 1925
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Pierce entertained at a dinner Sunday in honor of Grandma Couglis on her 77th birthday anniversary.
The trip the Marcus ball team took the other night proved disastrous. Besides losing the game with a score of 7-11, four of the boys were knocked out in the first inning and ha no substitutes.
Marion Frank, 17 years old Marcus lad, was drowned in Storm Lake Sunday morning while he and two companions were on a fishing expedition. Sherman and Fred Hoxsie were rescued after the boat capsized.
A grand opening of the new dance hall in Ekblad building on Thursday will feature Cato’s Vagabonds.
Mrs. Elizabeth Collins received a message Saturday, May 2 announcing the death of her daughter, Mrs. Edward Bogen of Montevideo, Minnesota.
J.B. Carey, 81, died at the family home in Marcus Sunday, May 3 after a long illness due to heart trouble and complications.

James Gurley, 77 a Marcus Resident for 50 years, died at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars Sunday following a long illness.
On Tuesday evening the annual Junior/Senior Banquet was held at Holy Name School. Reverend George Cooke and Reverend Arnold Ahlers were honored guests.
Colonel Claude Stanly of Corning, Iowa has been secured as the speaker for Memorial Day in Marcus.
Monday, June 3 was set by A.A. Corburn, President of the Wool Grower’s Association, as the day for growers to pool their clips for shipment to the warehouse in Des Moines.
Mrs. Irma Juhl is opening her Modern Beauty Shop in the rooms below the Farmers State Bank on Saturday, May 11.
85 Years Ago -1940
Forty acres of ground was plowed in 41 hours on the Peters farm Saturday with one tractor and plow. The tractor used on the farm, which is equipped with lights, was operated continuously with drivers taking turns.
Six horses, 23 head of hogs an done calf died in a fire which destroyed a barn on the Mrs. George Johnson farm Saturday night. The livestock was owned by Mr. & Mrs. Otto Jorgensen.
The Home Society will meet on Friday afternoon May 10 with Mrs. Charles French
The next meeting of the Marcus Tourist Club will be May 22 with Mrs. Eva DuBois.
William Muller has sold his shop to Art Jenkins and has bought into the Eastside Tavern.
Mrs. A.P. Johnson has passed away after a serious illness for the past several months.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Pfc. Mr. & Mrs. Charles Bass arrived in Marcus last Friday from Camp Carlson, Colorado, where Pfc. Bass received a medical discharge from the U.S. Army.
Mr. & Mrs. Ed Schnoes received a telegram last Friday from the War Department saying their son Pfc. Edward Schnoes was slightly injured on April 12 in Germany.
Mrs. Lyle Schlenger has resigned as clerk at the Clarkson grocery store.
Mr. & Mrs. R.J. Pattison, formerly of Marcus now of Merrill, will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on the last Sunday in May, the 27th, with an open house.
75 Years Ago -1950
Services for Mrs. Henry Wendt will be held Friday, afternoon at the Peace Lutheran Church with Reverand R.W. Meyer officiating.
Carol Weimer has been chosen by the committee of the American Legion Auxiliary to represent Marcus at Girls state this year.
Fire chief Howard Peavy presented medals to Felix Treinen, Ray Walsh, Clarence Dorr and Fritz Wilkens for their many years of service in the department.
Janet Miller and Duane Prunty won the first prizes in the two divisions of the Poppy Day poster contest being conducted by the local Legion Auxiliary.
F. Aurthur Johnson, former resident of Marcus, died April 20 form a heart ailment at the age of 68 years.
Earl Rae has been selected for a role in the Drake University production of Shakespeare’s “Merchant of Venice,” to be presented in the Des Moines Auditorium May 11-13.

Miss Claire Meehan, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Meehan, was elected queen of the Freshman class to crown Our Lady of Lour, freshman in the grotto on Angel Campus at Clarke College in Dubuque.
Mrs. Bertha Hendrickson passed away at LeMars Wednesday afternoon.
Mary Ellen Kelley, Marcus received still another honor last week when her article, “Was Chosen by God?” was awarded a first place in the national writers contest sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women.
JoAnn Jordahl, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Kenmar Jordahl, has been appointed to the student development commission by student body president Jim Kucera of Tabor, South Dakota.

Mrs. Norman Treinen, 41, passed away at her home six miles north of Remsen Wednesday evening following a short illness.
Rex Dorr, who resigned this spring as superintendent of the Marcus Community Schools, has accepted a position with the Iowa State Parole Board.
Henry Sanow, 70, a Remsen farmer, passed away Wednesday morning at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Rassel are the parents of a son born Friday, May 13, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
The employees of the Western Iowa Telephone office entertained Mrs. Frances Stowater Monday evening honoring her birthday.

Karl, son of Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Dorr, broke his right thumb last Tuesday afternoon when getting off a school bus.
Frank Barwick, 68, Washta, died Monday at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines where he had been since 1941.
Mrs. Charles Letsche was the winner of the watch given away Saturday evening at Nagle’s Apparel.
John Clarkson went to work this week as a bookkeeper and counterman at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator.
Gail Bancroft participated in the National Guild of Piano Teachers audition held in Sioux City and received a superior rating in the state preparatory division.

Gary Fischer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Herman Fischer, has accepted a position as an industrial engineer with the Singer Company Vapor Corp.
Otto Henry Nitzschke, 74 Remsen, died Saturday, May 9 at his home at Remsen from a Heart Attack.
Mrs. Lovil Laws, 63, Marcus, passed away Wednesday morning at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars following a lingering illness.
Mr. & Mrs. John Vander Haag of Sanborn have adopted a second child into their home, a son.
Mrs. George Grauer, 91, Marcus passed away May 7 in a Cherokee.
50 Years Ago -1975
Mrs. Olive Grace Hansen, 79, died Sunday at a Fort Collins hospital after a lengthy illness. She had been a former resident of Cleghorn.
Dr. J.A. Given, 79, Grand Rapids, Michigan, died there on May 4. He had been a resident of Grand Rapids for 15 years.
A daughter was born May 9 to Mr. & Mrs. Ronald Johannsen of Sioux City.
Mr. & Mr.s Franklin Davis of Bettendorf, former Cleghorn residents, will be honored with an open house in observance May 24 at the Asbury Methodist Church in Bettendorf.
Miss Valarie Slagter has been selected by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 517 to Iowa to attend the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girl’s State, to be held at the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, beginning June 8. She is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Larry Slagter of Marcus.

Terry Horsley, who coached the Marcus Eagles to the Boys State Basketball Tournament for the first time in the schools history has won conveted honors as KCHE Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.
Mrs. Earl Holmquist, 46, Remsen, died Sunday, May 4 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee after being stricken at her home.
Mr. & Mrs. Terry Reusch, Marcus, are the proud parents of their first child born May 6.
Mrs. Cletus Vaske, 61, Remsen, died May 6 at her home in Remsen of a long illness.
George Delperdang, 86, Remsen died Tuesday, May 6 in the Happy Siesta home at Remsen after a long illness.
