105 Years Ago -1920
Fred Knox, proprietor of the Idle Hour Theatre, will take charge of the Bas and Nagle ice cream parlor and new stand. Mr. Knox while not ready to make any announcement state that Marcus will not be without a picture theatre. W.W. Bass of Maurice Nagle have not announced their plans for the future.
100 Years Ago – 1925
65 businessmen and women attended one of the snappiest meetings in the history of the Marcus Booster Club at the Marcus Cafe last Thursday night and outlined many important activities for the summer season. It was decided to keep the stores open on Wednesday nights each week during the busy season of the farmers.
W.W. Bass has installed a frigidaire costing $500. The new improvement will permit him to carry several different kinds of ice cream during the summer season.
Death claimed Mrs. Anna Kaja Amudosn, 82 at her home Saturday, March 21 after a few days illness with pneumonia.
95 Years Ago -1930

90 Years Ago -1935
Much field work has been done in this territory the past 10 years. The top soil is in excellent condition and seeding of oats and barley has been done. Early seeding received the benefit of the snow on Monday which fell softly and melted as it touched the ground.
Mrs. Charles Peach of an Francisco, California received last week a copy of a new waltz which she composed and which is being published by an eastern publishing company. The title of the waltz is “When the Silvery Moon Swings Low.” Mrs. Peach was formerly Miss Hazel Williams of Marcus.
C,I. Hageman, proprietor of the Hageman kenels, dshipped a litter of wire haired terrors to a pet shop in Pennsylvania last week.
Tuesday night March 26, the Marcus Boy Scouts will play basketball with the Cherokee Boy Scouts at the high school auditorium. Between halves Scoutmaster Wixel will present awards for advancement and recognition.
Miss Kathryn Matcalf is working the switchboard at the telephone office this week.
85 Years Ago -1940
The Black and White Hamburger Shop opened for business Saturday in the Seeger building. The room has been re-decorated and nicely equipped. Ralph Booth, the proprietor has had previous experience in the restaurant business here in Marcus.
A baby girl was born to Mr. & Mrs. Lorenz Meyer April 1.
Mr. & Mrs. Homer Weimer are the proud parents of a son born Wednesday afternoon at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Gene Kieffer, publisher of the Remsen Bell Enterprize has thrown his hat into the political ring by announcing for the nomination for state senator from the 26th district including Cherokee, Plymouth and Ida counties.
Coach “Yoder has plans for a spring program of sports for the Marcus high school boys, but the snow and mud have prevented outdoor work. Baseball and track will each have a part in the program and practice will begin as soon as weather conditions permit.
The freshman of Holy Name school entertained the high school with a St. Patrick program Friday afternoon.
Kenneth Nagle has been installed as mayor of Meriden Mr. Nagle formerly lived in Marcus and was in business here, but new operates the Meriden Cash Store.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Cpl. John Keegan, 19, was killed in action March 7 in performance of his duty and service of his country according to a telegram received Friday evening March 30 by his mother, Mrs. S.A. Smorawske.
Last rites for Mrs. Frank Porter were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist Church with Rev. Rhompson, pastor of the Methodist church at Larrabee officiating.
Mr. & Mrs. Forrest Burch and family were pleasantly surprised at a housewarming Friday evening March 30 when members of the Birthday Club when members of the Birthday Club called at their new home.
Pfc. Harold Wallin and Cpl. Elmord Wallin recently met in Germany. It has been 15 months since the two brothers last saw one another. Harold has been overseas 8 months and Elmore more than a year.
Word has been received by relatives that Lr. Russel Rohlfson was killed in a plane accident March 7 on Morotar Island in the Pacific theatre,
Mr. & Mrs. August Riedemann, Paullina, have received word of the death of their son Cpl. Ferd Riedmann who died March 18 in Belgium.
Staff Sgt. George Dorr son of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Dorr of Marcus has been presented the Air Medal. He is radio operator abroad a 13 AAF B-24 Liberator.
75 Years Ago -1950
Don Peters, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Oeters of Marcus, is a member of the Iowa State Teachers College choir that is presenting a series of concerts in northeastern Iowa.
New officers for the Marcus Rotary Club include Melvin Dorr, Clarence Beck, Rev. R.W. Meyer, Harold Stientjes and W.W. Bass.
Christy Flanagan suffered very painful burns around the face last week when a gas range he was lighting exploded in his face.
The Marcus Merry Makers 4-H girls enjoyed a demonstration on making bread and different types of rolls in the home of Mrs. Will Ament Saturday afternoon.
Mayor A.J. Lenth was re-elected at Monday’s municipal election here by a comfortable majority, receiving 211 votes to 68 for Francis Treptow on the second ticket on the ballot.
The Marcus Tourist Club met in the home of Mrs. Guy Rae.

Wayne Baldner who farms south of Marcus has been honored at the Sioux City Junior Chamber of commerce’s selection as the outstanding young farmer of northwest Iowa.
Garry Arthur Johnson, infant son of Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Johnson, passed away at birth Monday, April 4
Iowa fur buyers reported a sharp decrease in fur supplies for the 1954-55 trapping season, with only about half as many pelts purchased as in other years.
Chapter FM PEO. met in the home of Mrs. Lucy Kuehn Monday, April 4. Mrs. Ruth Rae was in charge of the program.
Mrs. Myrtle Benedict has announced the engagement of her daughter Mary Ellen, to James Gerald Meyer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Meyer.
Mrs. Earl Davis entertained fifteen boys and girls at a party Tuesday afternoon in honor of her duaghter, Julie Ann’s seventh birthday.
Don Simons bought a 147 acres farm belonging to the estate of the late L.E. McGee at auction last Thursday. The farm brought $286 per acre.

Harry Baumgardener, 67, a Marcus barber for the past forty years, died Saturday, April 2. His death was due to heart failure and followed a number of attacks during the past several years.
Burdette Hansen, presently superintendent of the Ashton public school, has accepted a similar position with Marcus community School, according to announcement made this week by a local board.
Miss Susan Tregoning, a life long resident of Marcus Municipal building honoring Mr. & Mrs. Joe Broblek on their 30th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Alfred Nitzschke, 50 of Marcus died suddenly Saturday morning April 2 at Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City. The cause of her heath was heart failure.
Mr. & Mrs. Phil Treinen of Phoenix, Arizona are the parents of a son born Saturday, April 2.
60 Years Ago -1965
Henry Vogelman has accepted the position of head football coach at Denison Community High School Vogelman has been coach here since he graduated from Iowa State in 1962. His football teams compiled a 15-9-1 record in three seasons.
Two mooses, meese or mice which were brought back from Edmonton, Canada by Paul Rassel and Larry Homes, Ames and Bass truck drivers are guests at the Bass farm just west of Marcus for several days. They are en-route to Laredo, Texas to be put in a private zoo.
Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Prunty of Hawarden are parents of a daughter born Friday, April 2 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Pamela Grauer was one of 23 students at the Lutheran School of Nursing at Sioux City to receive her cap at the capping ceremonies on Sunday evening.
Harold Zarr, a farmer from the Larrabee community, has been named assessor for Cherokee County by the board of supervisors. Mrs. Zarr fills the vacancy by the death of Howard Montgemery.
55 Years Ago -1970
Daniel McCarthy, 69 died Monday at a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.
Mrs. Nick Kloster, 71 of LeMars, died March 26 after a brief illness.
Students all over the US participated in a national writing contest. The Marcus students wrote about “How My High School Years Could Be More Meaningful.” or “How I Could Better Serve My Country as a Citizen.” Theresa Brady, Becky Erickson and David Mayer, senior composition students, received work from the National Essay Press that their compositions were accepted for publication.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Seggerman became the parents of a son born Tuesday, March 24.
Vincent Galvin, 53 of LeMars died unexpectedly March 30 at New Prague, Minnesota while on a visit.
50 Years Ago -1975
Mrs. Earl Davis 50, of Marcus died March 28 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
Mrs. Ben (Winfred) Wolken of Granville died March 11 at a Des Moines hospital following a long illness.
Ray Hanson has opened up the Phillip 66 station that has been closed for some time. In addition to the usual petroleum products and lubrication services, Ray also gives complete motor overhaul and transmission service.
Gross, Inc. will have open house Thursday, April 3. Coffee and ham sandwiches will be served throughout the day.
Mrs. Ed Recker, 59 of Alton, died April at her home of an apparent heart attack.
45 Years Ago – 1980
After more than 61 years, Ervin Mayer, 85 Marcus has received the Purple Heart for wounds that he incurred while serving with the expeditionary forces at the Argonne Woods in France.
Marian Bird, 75, of Marcus, died Monday, March 31 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee after a brief illness.
Mrs. Bessie Lang, 88, of Remsen died March 27 at the Happy Siesta Retirement Home, Remsen after a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Brobleck will be honored on Saturday, April 5 on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Jim Nielsen of Jim’s Farm Service has been selected by Golden Sun Feeds, Inc. in the Esterville plant area to serve on the company’s Dealer Advisory Council for 1980.
