105 Years Ago -1920
Mr. & Mrs. C.R. McConnell and son, Ralph moved this week to their fine new home which Ralph built this season on the quarter section farm his father presented him a year ago.
Peters Brothers have completed moving their equipment into their new annex which was recently added to their fine garage building. Their garage is now 50×200 feet and has an entrance on two sides.
H.J. Raun has set the date of February 12 to hold his closing out sale. The Rauns will move about March 1 to Morningside, Sioux City where they will occupy their new home which is under construction.
Mrs. L.C. McDaniel and daughters, Lois and Dorothy, visited in the home of her father in Leeds from Friday until Sunday.
100 Years Ago – 1925
Although the Board of Supervisors at a recent meeting agreed to pay the county assessors 25 per cent more this year owing to the extra work of taking the state census, assessors are not satisfied with the amount according to J.B. Dunn. Marcus assessor.
Mrs. E.J. Keleher departed last night for Chicago to enter a wholesale millinery house preparatory to taking a position this season.
Miss Lauise Ogbert, public health nurse of Des Moines arrived Sunday afternoon to spend six weeks in the Marcus schools.
95 Years Ago -1930
Mrs. E Cowan celebrated her 90th birthday in the home of her daughter Mrs. J.W. Mitchellon New Years Day.
Mrs. A.E. Wilson died at her home in Amherst Township Friday, January 2 after a brief illness.
Earl Lundgren had a serious accident Saturday evening while returning from Cleghorn with his team hitched to a bob sled. The team ran away, knocking Mr. Lundgren unconscious and badly cutting his face.
Reports at the annual meeting of the Marcus Library Association last Saturday shows that the association is in a prosperous condition with a membership of 144 members. Receipts amounted to $384.52 this year.
90 Years Ago -1935
F.G. Mossman of Amherst Township was sweepstakes winner in the Cherokee County poultry show held at Cherokee last week.
Mrs. Glenn Barnes entertained a group of ladies at quilting party in the home of Mrs. Alice Thompson Friday night.
The Marcus Eagles defeated the Quimby team Saturday night with a score of 41-16.
Lovell Simons, Amherst Township farmer, recently purchased an improvement forty acres farm in Amherst Township from Mrs. Charles Brown for about $135 per acre.
Mr. & Mrs. Albin Hanson are parents of a daughter born November 10.

Mr. O.H. Briggs, 68, widely known farmer and a long time resident of Cherokee County passed away at his home at noon Thursday, January 11 following an illness for a few days.
Miss Dorothy Quirin, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. E.P. Quirin is announced as one of the finalists in the 1940 Old Gold Student Year Book beauty contest at Iowa State Teacher’s College.
A district Boy Scout meeting will be held Thursday evening, January 23 at the Masonic Hall in LeMars to which all parents and friends of scouts are invited. After a fifty cent dinner twenty six boys will be advanced to the statues of Eagle Scouts, one of whom will be Bud Wheeler, son of MR. &Mrs. Hi Wheeler. At the same time Howard McConnell, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ralph McConnell, will become a Life Scout.
A son was born January 13 to Mr. & Mrs. Carl Peterson.
Mr. & Mrs. Erwin Tentinger are the proud parents of a daughter born January 12.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Miss Norma Strampe, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. O.J. Stampe, is a member of the farmed choir heard on the Lutheran Hour which is broadcast from St. Louis, Missouri every Sunday.
Patrick James Garvin, 66, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars Wednesday morning, January 10 following an illness of two months.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Treinen of Jackson, Nebraska, are the parents of a daughter born December 31 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Friends and relatives of Mr. & Mrs. Lin Stowater pleasantly surprised them at their home Sunday the occasion being the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Stowater.
Relatives received word January 13th that Sgt. Kenneth Dalton, son of Mrs. W.J. Dalton of Laurel, Nebraska has been reported killed in action in Belgium on December 22.
75 Years Ago -1950
Mr. & Mrs. Will Ament of Marcus won the Cherokee County Championship in the 1848-49 Hy-Line farm flock laying contest. The Ament flock averaged 201.5 eggs per hen housed.
Marcus High School was featured on last Sunday’s broadcast of the “Scholarship Quiz” from radio station KAYL in Storm Lake. Richard Rattery was the winner in competition with Water Means, Richard Pallesen, Margaret Rae, Betty Holmes and Sue Hogue.
Dr. and Mrs. Wiedemeir entertained Sunday at the pre-birthday dinner honoring their daughter, Karen.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred hoover entertained Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Woodall at dinner Monday evening honroing Mrs. Woodall on her birthday anniversary.
The Marcus Eagles lost two games the past week, one to Remsen on Friday evening and other to Grand Meadow on Tuesday evening. Both games were on the Marcus floor.
70 Years Ago -1955
Funeral services were held at the Holy Name Church Monday morning for Mrs. M.C. Evans who passed away at her home early Saturday morning January 15 after a brief illness.
Leonard Earl McGee, 71, passed away Saturday, January 15 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars after a six week illness.
Mr. & Mrs. George Rabel were honored on their 35th wedding anniversary Sunday evening of the last week when a group of friends and neighbors gathered at their home.
About fifty friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Ruden Sunday evening to honor them on their 15th wedding anniversary.
Saturday night for the first time in many long years the Marcus Public School brought home a championship from a country tournament. Accomplishing the feat was the girls team and they did it with wins over three tonight teams Washta, Cleghorn, and Aurelia.

Mr. & Mrs. Herman Treinen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Tuesday, January 19.
Joseph List, 72, of Alton died Tuesday, January 19 in Sacred Heart Hospital in their home.
Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Means will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Tuesday, January 26 with open house in their home.
The Marcus Eagles won an overtime thriller from Kingsley here Friday night in the most exciting game of the year. Time ran out with the score tied at 61, and Marcus scored six points in the three minute overtime while Kingsley failed to count.
Marcus Bancroft, a Marcus attorney, will undergo surgery this Thursday at Worrall hospital in Rochester, Minnesota for the detached retina of his left eye.
Boots Wallin has moved most of his equipment to his new blacksmith shop on west Railroad street and is now doing business from there.
Mr. & Mrs. Francis Cronin are the parents of a daughter born January 3 she has been named Julia Anne.

William D. Hazen, 95, passed away Sunday, afternoon at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following a brief illness.
Billy Redman, widely know drummer, will be the featured soloist next Tuesday night, January 26 for the annual winter band concert by the Marcus Community High School Band.
Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Mayer will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary Sunday, January 24 with open house at the Peace Lutheran Church parlors at Marcus.
Frank Meyer, 79, of Remsen passed away Monday evening at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following a brief illness.
Eidon Addy, who several months ago bought a partnership in the Nielsen Electric Shop here has purchased the interest of his former partner. Albert Nielsen and assumed possession of the Marcus business on Janyary 1.
Mr. & Mrs. Harry Neir were honored on the 59th wedding anniversary at a dinner held at the Municpal building New Years day.
The Clarkson Food Market here will observe its tenth anniversary this Friday and Saturday.
The Marcus girls basketball team realized an ambition of many years standing Tuesday evening, The defeatd the Meriden girls for the first time in the history of the schools. The boys however, lost to Meriden.
John Carlson of Lake Benten, MN, and a former resident of Marcus passed away on January 1.
The Marcus Sportsman club will hold its first fox hunt of the season next Sunday afternoon.

Tom McIntosh has been hired by the Board of Education to replace Al Van Abbema as a high school English teacher.
Kenneth Nagle, 62, of Rockwell City died Saturday, January 10 in a Fort Dodge hospital following a Fort Dodge hospital following a stroke. He was a native of Marcus and grew up here.
The Rev. E.J. Plummer, 89, of Marcus passed away Saturday, January 10 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.
Mr. & Mrs. George Rabel marked their golden wedding anniversary Tuesday, January 6.
Cecilia Santos, an exchanged student from Brazil, will be staying with the Carroll Kuehn family for six months. Cecilia will be participating in the Youth for Understanding Teenage Exchange Program.

Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Wilberding will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on Friday, January 24.
Mr. & Mrs. Gary Lussier are the parents of a daughter born Monday, January 13 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
A large barn on the Brian Nelson farm was completely destroyed by fire Tuesday morning when sparks from a tractor ignited the structure.
Much has been said and written about the weekend storm comparing it with storms in the past. Can’t say how bad they were in the past but do know this has a humdinger. With winds averaging 45 miles per hour with gusts up to 70 and a ten inch accumulation of snow you received from these components a raging snowstorm. Roads were blocked in both town and rural areas and from all appearances many will continue to be so for some time.
Mr. & Mrs. Dunn received word that their daughter, Joanne is on the Dean’s list this last semester at Arizona State University.
Hans Raun, 79, a former resident of Marcus passed away at his home in Sioux City December 30.
Mr. & Mrs. Jens Haahr spend Monday and Tuesday in Omaha where they attended a convention of Gamble dealers.

Mr. & Mrs. Michael Theisen of Remsen are the proud parents of their third child a girl, born Friday, January 4 at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City.
Mrs. Henry Meyer, 85 of LeMars died Monday, January 7 in a nursing home at LeMars after a long illness.
Mrs. Harold Bork, 50 of Marcus died Wednesday, January 9 in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital at Cherokee of a long illness.
Marv Ebert, owner of the new Southside apartments, announces they will have an Open House showing this Friday, January 18 and 19.
Mrs. Roger Nilles, 76, longtime Remsen, area resident died Thursday, January 19 at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars after a lengthy illness.
