110 Years Ago – 1915
The entertainment to be given Wednesday night January 6 for the benefit of the Marcus Library should be attended by a full house. The title of the play to be rendered is “The Spinsters Convention” and about two dozen people will take part in it.
After the first of January ten saloons will be open in Plymouth making 14 with those operating in LeMars, At Remsen, Louis Sunger will pay $8,000 for the privilege. At Craig a license of $1200 will be required and at Struble $1500. Saloons will be operated at Kingsley, Hinton, Merrill, Brunsville, Oyens, Westfield, and Akron. At the last named place the license will be $2000.
105 Years Ago -1920
F.E. Paine, who has been connected with the local telephone exchange since its organization eighteen years ago has resigned his position as manager to take effect February 1.
Christmas Day was rather a cheerless day for the J.W. Armbruster family as the quarantine card was tacked on their door. Quentheria, the youngest son had diphtheria but not in a serious form.
Mr. & Mrs. James Flanagan are parents of a son born on Saturday, December 27.
Vernance Sylvester last Monday for Los Angeles, California where he will join his parents Mr. & Mrs. V.F. Sylvester. Vernance purchased a one way ticket and if he likes the country as well as Harry Grauer and the other Marcusites, he will probably remain.
100 Years Ago – 1925
Mrs. E. Gowan celebrated her 90th birthday in the home of her daughter Mrs. J.W. Mitchell on New Year’s Day.
Mrs. A.C. Wilson died at her home in Amherst township Friday, January 2 following a brief illness.
Earl Lundgren had a serious accident on Saturday evening while returning from Cleghorn with his team hitched to a bob sled. The team ran away, knocking Mr. Lundgren unconscious and badly cutting his face.
School reopened Monday after the holiday vacation and the bus drivers are having considerable difficulty in making their rounds because of the bad roads. They go as far as possible and then return to town.
Lucille and Vera Herbert were hostesses at a watch party at their home Wednesday evening. The evening was spent in dancing and playing cards. Refreshments were served at the close of the evening.
95 Years Ago -1930
Lovel Simons, Amherst township farmer, recently purchased an unimproved 40 acres farm in Amherst township from Mrs. Charles Brown for about $135 per acre.
Mr. & Mrs. Albin Hanson are the parents of a daughter born November 10.
Mark Treinen, son of Mr. & Mrs. George Treinen, returned home Monday from the hospital where he had been receiving treatments for a broken leg.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Zangger are the proud parents of a son born Saturday. December 19.
The Marcus Township Farm Bureau ladies will hold on all day meeting at the home of Mrs. Ralph McConnell on Tuesday. At this meeting, the second in a series of lessons on cheese making in the home will be given by Miss Pearl Sims, HDA.
85 Years Ago -1940
On Thursday evening December 28 the members of Trinity Walter League were again hosts to their parents at their 15th anniversary banquet.
Farmers in the Marcus and Amherst township have sealed over 200,000 bushels of corn up to Wednesday evening.
Henry Alesch carried off the honors in the bowling tournament at the Marcus Recreation alleys during holiday week.
Miller’s Puffed wheat and Rice 2 lbs, for 15 cents; corn whole kernel Golden Bantam, No 2 can, 2 for 29 cents; water softener per lb. 5 cents; and Magic Washer soap, giant size for 59 cents at Treinen’s Market.
80 Years Ago – 1945
J.A. Michaelson, owner and manager of Michaelson Grocery for the past 23 years sold out to John Clarkson who took possession January 1.
Funeral services for Dorthea Pfiefer Kinzel, who passed away at her home in Cleghorn, December 18, were held at the Church of Christ at Cleghorn.
On December 28 the town of Merrill granted the IPS Company a twenty year franchise for electricity. The vote was for the proposition 125 against 1, total 126.
Alfred Bengston passed away Wednesday evening at his home at Marcus.
The huge quote of the Sixth War lawn in Cherokee County, $1,074.00 has been oversubscribed and again the county has reached another victory on the home front.
75 Years Ago -1950
The solemn blessing and dedication of the new pipe organ in Holy Name Church was held Thursday evening December 29.
An oyster supper was held Sunday evening in the H.E. Neir on their 54th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Ed Miller entertained a group of girls at a birthday party in honor of her daughter Janet’s 12th birthday Saturday afternoon.
The Cherokee county conference board has appointed Howard Montgomery to serve as county assessor for a four year term effective January 1 at a salary $4800 per year.
Mrs. Margaret Hey, chairman of the Marcus Christmas Seals sale reports that the nearly completed drive netted $333.15 to date. This is a new record for the town of Marcus, well above last years $278.36.
70 Years Ago -1955
The Clarkson Food Market here will observe its tenth anniversary with a big event this Friday and Saturday. The business also is changing its name from the Clarkson Clover Farm Store to the name first mentioned.
Eldon Addy, who several months ago bought a partnership in the Nielsen Electric Shop here, has purchased the interest of his former partner, Albert Nielsen, and assumed possession of the Marcus Business January 1.
Thieves entered the warehouse and garage of the West Iowa Telephone Company located at the end of the Exchange building some time Thursday night and made away with eight coils of copper wire averaging from 10 to 130 pounds per spool. The loss is estimated between $150 and $200.
Mr. & Mrs. Bill Seggerman are the parents of their first child, a girl born Friday, December 24 in the Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Harry Neir were honored on their 59th wedding anniversary at a dinner held in the Municipal building New Year’s Day.
65 Years Ago -1960
The announcement was made this week of the change of ownership of the Ford dealership in Marcus. The new owners are Willis and Allen Wagler, brothers who come here from Mr., Pleasant, Iowa.
Mr. & Mrs. Emery Goodrich of Cleghorn will be honored at an open house in observance of their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday, January 10 at the Cleghorn school house.
John Harms, 83, died Monday, January 4 at a nursing home here following a lingering illness.
Fred Klingbeil, longtime Plymouth county resident, passed away at his home in LeMars, December 29.
Harry Sholly, 68, Sutherland died Monday, January 4 in Sioux Valley Hospital after several weeks illness. His death was attributed to heart trouble.
60 Years Ago -1965
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Wilkens are the parents of a son born Tuesday January 4 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mrs. Anna Bancroft, 89, passed away Monday evening at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following a heart attack suffered Sunday night.
Don Guest took over his duties as Cherokee County auditor the first of the year. Mr. Guest was elected to the post last fall succeeding Erma Smith who retired after many years of courthouse service as auditor and deputy auditor.
Judge L.O. Lampman, 70, formerly of Primghar, who retired as district judge in the Twenty First Judicial District August 31, died December 30 at Seal Beach, California where he had made his home.
Four band members have been selected to participate in the Northwest Iowa Band. They are Louise Baker, ten sax; Jan Berglund, alto sax; Linda Baker, french horn and Ina Irwin, clarinet.
55 Years Ago -1970
Seven girls will compete for the Marcus Miss Title at the pageant Sunday evening at the high school auditorium. They are Barbara Bindner, Sally Specht, Julie Bohnenkamp, Patty Nielsen, Barbara Snyder and Marcia Steffen.
Mr. & Mrs. Arley Schmillen will observe their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their children on Sunday, January 4 at 207 E Maple Street in Cherokee.
The Niemann Jewelry is officially closed after 80 years of operation in Marcus.
Raymond Quirin, 64 died Wednesday, December 24 at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls. He had been ill since March of 1967 when he suffered a severe stroke.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Simons announce the arrival of their first child a daughter, born Saturday, December 27.
Mrs. Kirk (Olive) Kingsbury, 76 died Thursday morning December 24 in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.

Mr. & Mrs. Joe Rosener are proud parents of a set of twins born Monday, December 30.
A former Cleghron man, Virgil Kirchoff was recently appointed to the Board of Directors at the First National Bank at Belleville, Illinois.
The Marcus Fair Association held its annual meeting and elected its new officers as follows: Chargles Krekow, president; Jerry Meylor, vice president; Dale Lynn, secretary; and Lois Krekow, treasurer.
Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Schlenger of Santa Carla, California are parents of a son barn Friday, December 27.
Mr. & Mrs. Merle Sand, hosted a breakfast in their home honoring their grandson, Cody Allen Sand, following his baptism in Holy Name Church Sunday morning.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mrs. Aruthur Beerman, 87 of Marcus died Wednesday, December 26 in the care center at Paullina of a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Lundell of Cleghorn are the parents of a son born December 24 in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital, Cherokee.
Mrs. William Petersen, 69, died Friday, December 21 at her farm home south of Cleghorn.
Pat Collins and Boze Rassmussen have announced to the News that the “Hawkeye will rise again” They have planned to rebuild after the old building was destroyed by fire several weeks ago and on the same site.
Mr. & Mrs. Dick Petersen were honored at a dinner party in observation of their 40th wedding anniversary on Wednesday evening at the Golden Pheasant in Remsen.
Mr. & Mrs. Laurence Busch of Moville are the parents of a new daughter born December 23.
30 Years Ago – 1985
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Glackin woule like to invited friends and relatives for their 25th wedding anniversary the event will be held at the VFW in Cherokee on January 5.
On January 16th, Mike Moats one of the members of Local Boy Scouts Troop 113 of Marcus, Chartered by the Marcus Jaycees, received the highest rank in scouting when he became an Eagle Scout.
Rosa Apel, 83, of LeMars, formerly of Marcus and Sioux City, died Tuesday in a nursing home in LeMars after a year of illness.
An open house will be held at the Marcus Community Center on Saturday, January 12 in honor of George Hoefling’s 80th birthday.
Mrs. Cheryl Richeal received word from Osan, Korea that her husband, Msgt. Bob Richeal was injured jumpping out of the way of a taxi. Bob hit a pile of lumber and broke his right elbow and injured the left elbow, both knees and bruised his check. He is to have surgery.
