110 Years Ago – 1914
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Porter were completely surprised at their home last Wednesday evening when relatives came in to remind them of their 11th wedding anniversary.
Ralph Turner has moved his panatorium equipment to the Dan Collins building on the east side of Main Street.
The Edmond Longergan Company makes announcement this week of their plans to erect next spring a two story brick building on their corner lot across the stret east of the First National Bank.
105 Years Ago -1919
Wally Clarkson is quite the hero about town since he thwared the plans of an attempted robbery here Friday night at the Edmond Londergan company.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Louis Kirchoff a son on October 29.
Work has begun to replace the barn and corn crib at the Harm Seggerman farm south of Remsen which was destroyed by fire.
100 Years Ago – 1924
About 25 of Francis Clarkson’s schoolmates came Wednesday November 19 to help him celebrate his birthday.
Friends of James Collins will be interested in knowing that he is going to broadcast some vocal selections from Woodman of the World Radio Station in Omaha.
A baby boy was born to Mr. & Mrs. John Harms Sunday, December 16.
A host of friends and relatives met at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Will Schmillen and surprised them on their return from a shopping tour in Sioux City on Thursday evening, December 13 the occasion being their silver wedding anniversary.
Each year has its own particular fad in Christmas gifts and this year the popular present is the radio. Hearing programs broadcasted from the various stations in the United States has proved a profatable and pleasant pastime for some months, but hearing programs from other countries is a new feature.
The country borad of supervisors have purchased a new Austin-Western road maintainer.

Fire of unknown origin caused considerable damage at the Clarence Sand home Thursday night.
Dr. and Mrs. J.A. Given are the parents of a baby girl born Sunday December 1 in the Methodist hospital in Sioux City.
Roy Barnes announces his third annual horse sale which will take place on Saturday at the Quirin barn. Mrs. Barnes offers 25 head of good horses raised on his ranch in North Dakota.
Humphery Means and Homer Weimer returned Sunday evening from a hinting trip in southern Pennsylvania. Each brought home a deer.
85 Years Ago -1939
James Whealon has accepted a position with the Farmers State Bank and began his duties last Saturday.
A business deal was made last week by which R.E. Smith sold his Ice Cream Parlor to Herman Lage of Cushing.
Mr. & Mrs. Ted Garvin and daughter Barbara of New York City arrived at Mr. & Mrs. Joe Garvin’s last Sunday.
Lawrence Swanson has been appointed president of the school board of Marcus township.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Pearson are parents of a son born Saturday November 25.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Edward Evans, the new owner and manager of Peters Brothers Garage, took possession December 1 and is open for business under the name of Evans Motor Company.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Keffler morn over the loss of their infant daughter who died Monday morning December 4. She was born Sunday evening,
Mr. & Mrs. Porter were pleasantly surprised Sunday evening with a purse at their home when neighbors honored them at a farewell party.
Sunday, December 3 marked the silver wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. F.E. Rubbert.
Pfc. and Mrs. Emory Brandt are the parents of a daughter born to them Wednesday morning November 29 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Meyer of Cleghorn received word Monday through a telegram that their son S/Sgt Elmer Meyer was killed in action in France on November 17. S/Sgt Meyer is a nephew of Mrs. Carl Kuehn.
75 Years Ago -1949
A burning pile of wood in the back of the Marcus Hardware nearly got out of hand Saturday before it was discovered and extinguished by the fire department. The wood was ignited from a neighboring incinerator.
The Sand’s Seed Service team from Marcus placed first in the Stockyards Bowling Association tournament at Sioux City which ended Sunday. They knocked over 3,064.
Ole Wallin had this misfortune to injure his right hand Monday when a piece of wood he was sawing at the Marcus Lumber Company flew off the block, breaking one of his fingers and cutting the others.
Sunday, December 4, Mr. & Mrs. F. E. Rubbert observed their 30th wedding anniversary. Approximately 90guests attended the open house in their home.
Mr. & Mrs. Ambrose Heinis of Peterson, formerly of Marcus, were pleasantly surprised last Tuesday evening when a group of relatives and friends called to honor them at a joint housewarming and birthday party. The guest of honor moved into their new home last Sunday November 27 and celebrated their birthdays December 2 and 5 respectively.
70 Years Ago -1954
Mr. & Mrs. Donald Goodburn announce the birth of a daughter born Wednesday morning December 1 in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were conducted at Holy Name Church Tuesday morning for Cyril Brady, 57, former resident of Marcus, who passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Portland, Oregon on December 1.
John Joseph Garvin, 79, a resident of this community for 60 years, died Tuesday at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following several weeks illness.
The Marcus News this week starts Volume LXXI according to the date lines appearing on page one of each issue. However some time in the past 70 years, two years and three months have been lost.
Cy Brownmiller, Marcus trucker, was one of four truckers to win safety awards at the Sioux City Trucker’s convention last week.

Miss Agnes Linnea Johnson, 50of LeMars, died Sunday, December 6 at Sacred Heart Hospital following a four month illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Wilfred Goth are the parents of a daughter born Monday, December 7 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
A number of pickers and helpers gathered at the Bryan Cambell home to help Mr. Campbell home to help Mr. Campbell harvest his corn. Mr. Campbell had the misfortune of injuring his hand and was unable to do his picking.
Mr. and Mrs. George Grauer of Marcus recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Mr. & Mrs. LaVerne Miller of Council Bluff born Wednesday December 9.

Felix Treinen, 81, passed away Monday morning, December 7 at his home in Marcus following a lingering illness.
Mrs. Fern Riedmann. 7, passed away Tuesday, December 8 at the Greg Hilltop Home in Cherokee following a lingering illness.
Aaron Alm observed his 83rd birthday Monday at his home in Cleghorn.
Mrs. Bess Nelson entertained at a party Saturday afternoon December 5 honoring Miss Mollie Fenton on her 91st birthday. Several relatives and friends attended.
Mrs. & Mrs. J.W. Kruse of Paullina will observe their golden wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday afternoon December 13 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Germantown.
55 Years Ago -1969
Funeral services for Mrs. Joseph Hamman will be held at 9:30 this Thursday morning in Holy Name Church here. The Hammans live at Meriden and spend the winters in Texas. She passed away Sunday December 7 at Mission, Texas.
AMN John Carey was graduated with honors November 25 at Lowry Air Forces Base, Denver Colorado upon completing the Inventory Specialist Course at the 3415th Technical School.
Miss Mary Oberman, 82, of Granville, died December 4 at an Orange City Hospital following several months illness.
A daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. James Whited at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee on Thursday, December 4.
Mr. & Mrs. Clare Green were honored at an open house at the Memorial Presbyterian Church at Cherokee on Sunday, December 7 on their golden wedding anniversary.
50 Years Ago -1974
Mr. & Mrs. Steve Sand of Esterville announce the arrival of a baby boy born Sunday, December 8.
Word has been received of the death of Rev. Paul Melrose, a former Marcus resident.
Ambrose Heinis was guest of honor at a gathering in Holy Name Hall on Wednesday, December 4 complimenting him on his 85th birthday.
Kathy Knudson and Brian Friedrich each earned two superiors at the Spenser Speech Festival last Saturday.
The Marcus girls started out their basketball season with a close victory against Holstein Tuesday night. The Marcus girls played a hard fought game with a victory of 52-50. High scorer for Marcus was Rhonda Hansen with 34 points, Sue Knudson with 10 points and Becky Schmillen with 8 points.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Radio Station KCHE in their annual “Coach of the Year” award made the presentation to Coach Ed Smith who steered the Marcus team to yet another outstanding year and to the War Eagle Conference crown.
Mr. & Mrs. John Sand became the proud parents of a baby girl born November 28 in Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Steve Geringer, Sioux City was recently appointed to the Board of Directors on the Big Brother and Big Sister of Siouxland. Steve is employed as Acting Director of the Woodbury County Juvenile Detention Center.
Mrs. Robert Byer, 38 of Meriden, died Thursday November 29 in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital Cherokee.
A Marcus student will perform with the Buena Vista College Chorale at its annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 9. Barbara Hohbach daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Hohbach of Marcus is one of 50 members of the chorale.
35 Years Ago – 1989
The farm of James & Thomas McClintock was honored as a Century farm at the ceremonies held Tuesday, August 22 at the Iowa State Fair.
K-Products facility in Marcus was recently honored with the 1989 Governor’s Industry Award.
