110 Years Ago – 1914
One hundred and fifty invitations have been sent to friends announced the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Dorr at their home Saturday, November 7.
James Dalton Sr. for many years a prominent citizen of Marcus and Cherokee county, died Tuesday, October 27.
Mr. & Mrs. Harm Seggerman of Remsen mourn the loss of their infant daughter, Marie died October 26.
105 Years Ago -1919
The new handsome oil station erected by 20 local people who hold interest in the Sammies Oil Company is now complete. Granville Petty is the city manager, but it will make no difference to the patrons, if he is the out taking lunch or off duty as you can serve yourself. Just drop a dollar on the amount you wish to spend and gaslone in the slot and out comes the gas.
A very successful surprise was carried out on Mr. & Mrs. Frank Porter Tuesday evening in celebration of their 16th wedding anniversary. The guests of honor were presented with cut glass and china pie plates.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Joseph Dempsey and Robert Meylor purchased last Saturday the auto garage and business of Arthur Day. The boys also brought the residence.
A kerosene heater exploded in the James Crangle home last week and smoked the walls to such an extent that this week the first floor walls are being decorated.
John Baerling returned home from his 15th trip across the ocean to Sweden. Mr. Baertling made the trip to settle the estate of his father.
William Gibson experienced a rather unpleasant happening one day this week while he was oiling a corn elevator. Some way his jacket caught fire and every thread of it was torn from his body. Luckily he escaped with only slight bruises. Born to Mr. & Mrs. Louis Kirchoff, October 29, a son.
At a meeting of the city council Monday night Ben Blietz was engaged to act as night marshall during the winter months.
95 Years Ago -1929
The Junior M Club play “Smile Rodney Smile” will be presented in the high school auditorium Friday, November 22. The juniors are giving the play to raise money for the Junior Senior banquet.
The county board of supervisors has purchased a new Austin Western road maintainer and snow plow at the cost of $3,400. It is a six wheeled machine with two drivers on each side. Equipped with electric lights so that it can be used day or night.
A.I. Birch on Tuesday of last week completed the construction of a new corn crib and granary on his section of the farm in Tilden Township. It has the capacity for holding 5,00 bushels of corn and 4,00 bushels of small grain.
Mrs. Harry Mich passed away in her home November 15 after a lingering illness.
Robert Sklar, proprietor of the People’s Store in Marcus, announces this week that he will close our hir entire stock of merchandise and will leave the first of January to work in the east.
85 Years Ago -1939
Jack Pokken has made an unusual record in husking corn on the Harold Dorr farm north of Cleghorn. Last Friday he husked 75 bushels in four hours and 40 minutes. In ten days he husked 1361 bushels or almost 130 bushels per day. The corn yielded about 90 bushels per acre.
This community was terribly surprised and shocked Saturday upon hearing of the death of Floyd Knox, life long resident of Marcus and Treasurer of Cherokee County. He was found dead in his room at the Lewis Hotel in Cherokee that morning.
Mr. & Mrs. Matt Schmillen are the proud parents of a baby daughter born to them Tuesday morning.
Ellis Geister is in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars with a back injury which required placing him in a cast, due to a fall from a scaffold about four o’clock on Thursday.
Donald Alesch, little son of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Alesch Jr. received painful eye injuries Saturday when he was attacked by a dog.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Ensign and Mrs. Eugene Dorr are the parents of a daughter born Thursday, November 9 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Once again the “lend-a-hand” policy has proved helpful when 60 members of the Legion, the Auxiliary, neighbors and friends succeeded in picking 80 acres of corn for Mrs. Mary Meylor Tuesday, November 14.
Word has been received by relatives of the death of Stephen, the 14 month old son of Mr. & Mrs. Loren E. Morris on Saturday, November 4 at the home of his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. R.P. Williams, Burbank, California.
Ensign and Mrs. Ronald Waggoner are the parents of a son born to them Monday, November 13 at the Sacred Heart Hospital, LeMars.
75 Years Ago -1949
William Baumgartel, 41 year old Marcus farmer, passed away very suddenly October 26 at this home southeast of Marcus.
One hundred and thirty five relatives and friends attended open house at the George Grauer home Friday afternoon and evening in observance of their 40th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. F.E. Rubbert will hold open house at their home Sunday, December 4 in observance of their 30th wedding anniversary.

Construction of the new huge building at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator is moving along rapidly. The 123 foot wall of the bins have been completed and the top of the bins has been poured.
Mr. & Mrs. Will Ament will hold open house at their home Sunday, November 25 in observance of their 35th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Emma Woodall, 79 and former resident of Marcus, passed away at her home at Leola, South Dakota Tuesday, November 9.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Mossman of Marcus observe their golden wedding anniversary Thursday afternoon November 25.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Volz of Elkhart are the parents of a son born Thursday, October 28.

Vern Johnson of Marcus was named to the all northwest Iowa fourth football team by the Iowa Daily Press Association. Barry Grauer and Marlin Weicht were given honorable mention.
A great many friends of Mary Ellen Kelly braved a bitterly cold day to pay their respects to the Marcus writer at a community open house on her birthday Monday, November 16.
The Marcus Cooperative Oil Company of Marcus will be host to the people of this area at an open house in their new headquarters and super service station her Saturday.
The petition asking an election for the purpose of combining the present Grand Meadow and Marcus school districts was rejected at an adjourned meeting of the Cherokee and Plymouth county boards of education last Friday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. Lee Simons are the parents of a daughter born Monday, November 16 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.

Mrs. Anna Carey, 84, passed away early Sunday morning at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars following a long illness.
Denny Boots, Marcus seniors quarterback was named to the northwest Iowa football team selected by coaches of the area.
A carrot weighing two pounds was grown by Mr. & Mrs. Delbert Joslin. The Joslin’s planted one package of carrot seeds and harvested two bushels of carrots.
Mr. & Mrs. Boyd Kolb of Cleghorn observed their 25th wedding anniversary with open house at their home on Sunday afternoon November 8.
“Racing Fever” which plays Friday and Saturday at the Marland, is title of a new and the fist movie about hydroplane racing and it might also be the name of the disease that gripes the daring men who pilot these thundering boars. Joe Morrison, Barbara Biggart and Charles Martin star.

Open house will be held Sunday, November 23 from 2-4 pm at the Municipal building honoring Hans Rasmussen on his 90th birthday.
Lawrence Eickstaedt, son of Mr. & Mrs. Victor Eickstaedt, rural Storm Lake, graduated with distinction on August 4, from Stanford University at the Palo Alto, CA with a Ph.D. in marine biology. His wife is the former Jean Rutter of Marcus.
To mark their golden wedding anniversary Mr. & Mrs. Gust Berglund will be complimented with an open house on Sunday, November 23 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee.
John Specht 82, of Cleghorn, died Tuesday morning in Sioux City after a short illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Gerry Grauer of St. Petersburg, Florida are the parents of a son born Thursday, November 13.

Mrs. France O’Reilly, 92 of Marcus, died November 13 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars following a lingering illness.
Bob Hazen, a senior student at Northwestern College, has been assigned to do his student teaching at the Paullina Community School District during the period October 14 – December 21.
The high school Spanish classes hosted a Mexican dinner in honor of the foreign exchange students, Bertha Martinez and Susanna Cardenas on Thursday, November 14.
Mr. &Mrs. Carl Peterson of Marcus were honored on their 40th wedding anniversary with a dinner at a restaurant as guest of Mr. & Mrs. Gene Ferris and sons and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Peterson and family of Sioux City followed by a surprise party in the Gene Ferris home.
Mrs. Kendell Crawford and daughter, Tami and Kim and Mrs. Vera Fischer of Moville were Saturday guests in the home of Mrs. Melvin Lage.

Diane Sand, student from Marcus, will be participating in the 33rd Annual Iowa State Music Festival the weekend of November 16-17.
The children of Bill and Martha Ament invited you to celebrate with the 60th wedding anniversary of their parents. A reception will be held on November 25 from 2-4 pm at Holy Name Hall in Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Tim Schlenger of Kingsley announce the birth of a daughter born October 31.
Francis Muller announces the opening of a furniture store here in Marcus, with the opening date scheduled for Wednesday, November 14.
Mrs. Otto Carlson, 79 of Marcus died Sunday, November at her son’s home in Aurelia following a brief illness.
The Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Women of America Awards Program announced today that Mrs. Galen Rupp of rural Marcus has been selected for inclusion in the 1979 edition of Outstanding Young women of America.
