110 Years Ago – 1914
The twin sons of Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Johnson were christened at their home last Friday.
The Rudolph Zangger family luckily escaped serious or fatal injuries in an automobile accident at about eight last Sunday night.
A new 1-3 horsepower Kimble electric motor was installed in the news office last week and hereafter the small job press will be operated by electricity. The 4 horsepower gasoline engine will remain in the office to run the big newspaper press.
105 Years Ago -1919
The board of education has purchased shower baths for the public schools.
A Cleghorn man by the name of Newcomer met with misfortune on Monday night on the road between here and Cleghorn. He ran into a calf and his car overturned into the ditch. Mr. Newcomer escaped without injury.
100 Years Ago – 1924
M.J. Kelly has been appointed as night watchman and will begin his duties on November 1.
John Ohlendorf finished his husking corn on Tuesday and is the first, so far, we have heard.
Mr. & Mrs. Carl Hanson are the parents of a son born on Monday night October 28.
A new feature in the business line which will be greatly appreciated by the citizens of Marcus and vicinity will be a “Delicatessen Shop” conducted by the Mesdames Lura Ward an dHenry Abels. The ladies plan to do all kinds of baking.
85 Years Ago -1939
About noon today a fire thought to have started by a locomotive burned across a corn field that had been husked and over about 10 acres of alfalfa ground on the Baertling Brothers farm one and a half miles west of Marcus.
John Berendes and Ed Meylor will have a public sale next Tuesday, November 9 at the Berendes farm, one mile east of town. They are dissolving the partnership.
N.J. Wells received 85 birthday cards on his 94th birthday which occurred Wednesday, October 25. Friends all over the state remembered him but particularly his remaining comrades of the Civil War.
Sugar, 10 lbs at 52 cents with grocery order Friday and Saturday at Sjostrom Brothers.
Word was received Friday of the death of Mrs. Kate Greff at Chugwater, Wyoming. Mrs. Greff was a former resident of this community.
80 Years Ago – 1944
The Marcus High School Eagles dropped a close 7-0 game to the Kingsley hornets here Friday, The Kingsley team has been undefeated for three years.
Jackie Nicholson, who is staying at the home of his grandmother Mrs. J.B. Dunn, had the misfortune to fall last week and break his elbow.
Pvt. James Meylor, son of Mrs. Mary Meylor, received an honorable discharge from the United States Army to assist his mother with farm activities.
Women’s club met Wednesday, November 1 at the home of Mrs. John Delaney.. Mrs. Ray Niemann was in charge of the program, “Re employee of Service Men.”
Peter Miller Sr. was honored Sunday afternoon and evening at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Johann Miller when a number of relatives called honoring him on his 76th birthday.
75 Years Ago -1949
Mary, the infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Kilker of LeMars, passed away an hour after birth Monday, November 7 in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars. Mary was the great granddaughter of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Harvey of Marcus.
The good neighbor policy was well extended one day recently when 45 neighbors, friends and relatives of M.A. VanDAm and Robert Porter, Jr. who live southeast of Marcus, pitched in the harvested their corn crops in one day. Both Mr. Van Dam and Mrs. Porter are hospitalized.
Ronald, seven year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Gunnard Johnson of Pierson was injured last Tuesday, November 1 when he fell about 15 feet at the Grand Meadow school house. He was knocked unconscious but no bones were broken.
70 Years Ago -1954
Holy Name basketball team will open its season here this Friday night with Danbury Catholic coming to Marcus. Coach Walter Johnson will field a veteran club this year, having lost one member of last years squad.
Marcus movie fans will have an opportunity to see one of the best shows made since World War II when “The Best Years of Our Lives” comes of the Marland Sunday and Monday.
65 Years Ago -1959
The “tricks or treats for UNICEF” project conducted last Saturday evening by the young people of Grace Methodist Church collected the tidy sum of $113.
Sneak thieves some time Thursday or Friday night stole a tire and wheel and large doll from the trunk of the Fred Hoxsie Jr. car while it was parked at their home in east Marcus. The thieves also drained and gas tank.
Cleghorn will have a new mayor come January 1. He will be Harold “Shortie” Smith who defeated incumbent Ralph Shafer Shafer by the narrowest of margins.
A group of neighbors and friends gathered a the Walter Kamradt farm southwest of town last Thursday to pick his corn. Walt was recently released from Sacred Heart Hospital where he underwent treatment for heart ailment.
Mr. & Mrs. Craig Dorr are the parents of a daughter born October 26.
60 Years Ago -1964
Cherokee County voters, by 61% approval authorized the county to issue bonds for a new courthouse. The county vote 5,574 to 2,862 surpassed required 60% approval.
Mr. & Mrs. Larry Eickstaudt of San Francisco, CA are the parents of a son born Saturday, October 31.
Cottage cheese 12 oz carton, 10 cents; pork steak, 39 cents per lb., chuck steak, 49 cents per lb; cabbage, 2 cents a pound at Mighty Mite IGA.
Alex Dementevas of South Bend, Indiana, brother of Mrs. Stasy Nenortas, passed away Monday evening, November 2.
The new Marcus Junior Chamber of Commerce is planning a toy repairing project for the Christmas season. The Jaycees are asking the people of the community to donate toys of any kind from bicycles on down in any state of repair. They will be put in shape, or possibly used for parts and then become a part of some children’s Christmas somewhere.
55 Years Ago -1969
Anthon-Oto defeated Marcus Friday night 34-6 in the last game of the searson. Late in the fourth quarter a Powell to Connie Mead pass produced Marcus’ only score. The extra point was unsuccessful.
Meriden-Cleghorn high school present a three act comedy play entitled “Marrying Margaret” on Friday, November 7 at the Cleghorn auditorium. The plot centers around two conniving sisters who try to marry off their older prudish sister.
Word has been received that Margaret Rawson, who is enrolled in a medical secretarial course leading to an Associate of Science degree, is doing excellent work.
Final rehearsals are continuing for the all school play “Flowers for Algernon” A review calls it “The compelling story of Charlie Gardon willing victim of a stage experiment – a moron to a genius, a man in search of himself” Presentation will be Friday, November 7.
Marcus students have been invited to attend Prospective Teacher Day at Northwestern College in Orange City, November 5. These planning to attend are Patricia Nielse, Ann Dorr, Craig Strub, Mary Irwin, Debbie Davis, Theresa Brady, Tom Schlenger, Jeanette Earnest, Marcia Steffan, Mildred McIntire, Sally Specht, Virginia Lynn and Trudy Slagter.
50 Years Ago -1974
Betty Nelson, Steve Ducommun and Kay Krekow of Marcus Community High School have attained the hoghest honor available to Iowa High School musicians by being selected as a member, Steve and Jay are the children of Mr. & Mrs. Leonart Nelson, Mr. & Mrs. Galen Ducommun and Mr. & Mrs. Charles Krekow and the students of Miss Linda McClain.
Harry Powell, 75 of Marcus and former Sioux City resident, died Tuesday at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee after a short illness.
Sylvan Schuknecht of Cleghorn, an employee at the Farmer’s Elevator in Marcus, suffered a broken hip and cracked wrist in a fall while at work Friday morning.
The Marcus High School vocal music department will present the musical “Guys and Dolls” tomorrow night Friday, November 8 in the high school gym. The story, a musical fable of Broadway, takes place in the 1950’s.
The Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church held a farewell dinner and program to honor Rev. and Mrs. Harold Sieglaff who are retiring after seven years service to the Mt. Pleasant and Cleghorn Presbyterian churches.
45 Years Ago – 1979
The Marcus Eagles ended their season Friday night with a 29-13 loss to the Paullina Panthers. This, their only season loss, gives the Eagles an overall record of 7-1.
Mr. & Mrs. Carl Peterson will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary with an open house November 11 at the Mr. Pleasant Church south of Marcus.
Mrs. LeRoy Skaggs, 45 died Saturday in Joplin, Missouri after a long illness. She had been a resident of Joplin the last seven years, prior to that she had lived in the Cleghorn community.
Mr. & Mrs. Glenn Reistoffer of Paullina are the proud of parents of a daughter born Friday, October 26.
