100 Years Ago – 1924
Weldon Wayne, three year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Schorg of Remsen became drastically ill Saturday after drinking several swallows of kerosene.
The following Marcus cars have been registered: Mrs. Laura Ward, Studebaker touring car; E.W.z Gill, Ford touring car; Carl Johnson, Ford Roaster and Chevrolet coupe to Rasmus Juhl.
Work has begun to replace the barn and corn crib at the Harm Seggerman farm south of Remsen which was destroyed by fire Tuesday evening. Many neighbors helped haul sand for the foundation which was made by Joe Wilberding and his crew.
95 Years Ago -1929
Maxine Williams entertained members of the freshman class of the public school and Mr. & Mrs. Art Olson Friday evening. A wiener roast had been planned but because of the cold weather a house party was held instead.
Miss Mildred Johnson has returned to Lyton where she resumed teaching in the consolidated school there after a two week vacation.
Mr. and Mrs. Vic Sjostrom and Miss Margaret and Marion Collins left Thursday for Omaha where they spent the weekend visiting with Lorne collins who is attending the Creighton University there.
Miss Naim, who is a student nurse in St. Joseph’s training school in Sioux City, was an over Sunday visitor with her parents Mr. & Mrs. James Dalton and family.
“West of Zanzibar”, starring Lon Chaney, begins Sunday at the Rainbow Theatre.
Mr. & Mrs. William Petrie are celebtating Mr. Petrie;s 87th birthday.
85 Years Ago -1939
John Berendes and Ed Meylor will hold a public sale at the Berendes farm one half mile east of town. They are dissolving partnership and Mr. and Mrs. Meylor will move onto the Geringer farm which they purchased and Mr. & Mrs. Berendes will move into Marcus soon after the sale occupying the house which they purchased in the southeast part of town from Greg Kennedy.
About noon today a fire thought to have been started by a locomotive burned across a corn field which had been husked and over about ten acres of alfalfa ground on the Baertling Brothers farm, one and one half miles west of Marcus.
It is expected that the ditching machines will meet near Mill Creek today to complete the digging for the main gas pipe line. WithinMarcus about one third of the piping for the town has been laid an dthey are laying 1500 to 2000 feet per day of a total of 20,000 or 25,000 feet which it is expected will be required.
N.T. Wells received 85 birthday cards on his 94th birthday which occurred last Wednesday, October 25. Friends from all over the state remembered him but particularly his remaining comrades of the Civil War.
Mr. & Mrs. John Peterson are the proud parents of a daughter born Saturday.
A crew of 25 men from the local CCC camp started work to establish a Soil Conservation demonstration on the Glen Curtis farm southwest of Cherokee.
A series of teas are being held through the county by the various township women in FArm Bureau work.
80 Years Ago – 1944
A.S. Paul Polson, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gottfred Polson of Cleghorn, has been designated “Honor Man” of Co. 804 consisting of 120 men at the US Naval Training Center at Farragut, Idaho.
Three hundred eighty eight boxes were packed, wrapped and addressed for overseas mailing to be sent to the men and women of the community serving in teh armed forces.
Tuesday, October 24 was the 61st wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Crocker, pioneer resident of Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Nagle will observe the tenth anniversary of the opening and operation of the Nagle Food Shop Saturday with a birthday party. The party is unique in that the guests of customers will be offered bargain specials on that day and will be served to treats besides.
Thirty five relatives, neighbors and friends of Mr. & Mrs. George Johnson surprised them on their 40th wedding anniversary Wednesday evening October 18 at the Methodist Church parlors.
Mr. & Mrs. Louis Jepson are the parents of a duaghter born to them Thursday, October 19 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
75 Years Ago -1949
A short prayer service was held Thursday afternoon at the Nelson Funeral Home in Marcus for James Edward, son of Mr. & Mrs. Wilken Paulsen of near Granville.
In spite of corn borer damage and loss from down corn, the vicinity of Marcus is harvesting a good crop this year. The crop in this area will run well over the 53 bushel estimate for the state.
W.W. Bass of Marcus has a very unusual hobby – in fact he is probably te only person in the world who raises albino mallard ducks.
The community of Marcus was shocked Sunday by the death of William Baumgartel, 41, who died very suddenly from a heart attack at his farm home seven miles southeast of Marcus.
Mrs. John Williams received a cut knee and wrenched back and John a broken rib in an automobile collision on the corner southeast of the school building.
70 Years Ago -1954
Jonas Wallin, 94 who has been making his home at Paullina for several years, died early Wednesday evening. He had been in normal health and his death was due to his advanced age.
The unveiling of the 1955 Chevrolet in Marcus will take place, Thursday, October 28 at Nagle Chevrolet as part of the annual nation wide showing of the new models.
Allan Grauer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Grauer, is enrolled as a freshman in the University of South Dakota Law School at Vermillion.
Marcus Chapter no 376 Order of Eastern Star held a special meeting Wednesday evening in the new Masonic Temple in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Chapter and Chapter having been granted on October 27.
Mr. & Mrs. Cletus Henke of Cherokee are the parents of twin boys born Wednesday, October 13 in the Sioux Valley hospital at Cherokee.
65 Years Ago -1959
The Marcus Fire Department was called to the Dick Peterson farm a half mile west of Marcus late Monday afternoon by a burning combine. The fire was speedily extinguished by the firemen damage to the motor, belts and adjacent equipment was heavy.
Pins started rattling Monday evening at Larry’s Lanes here, the new six land bowling alley just completed by Mr. & Mrs. Larry Slagter.
Mr. & Mrs. Albert DeBoer returned October 8 from Germany where they have been since August. The DeBoer’s visited his father and her parents as well as other relatives and friends.
Mr. & Mrs. Leland Hogue are the parents of a daughter born Saturday, October 17 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Funeral services for Dale hoover, 45 of Sioux City were held in Holy Name Church here Wednesday morning with the Rev. Robert O’Reilley officiating.
60 Years Ago -1964
Funeral service were held Thursday morning, October 8 in Holy Name Church for Arnold Toomey former Marcus resident who passed away at a Los Angeles hospital following a short illness caused by a influenza complications.
Warren Baker, 57 and lifetime resident of the Pierson community passed away Monday morning at his farm home following a lingering illness.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, October 6 at Holy Name Church for James Cronin with the Rev. Robert O’Reilly officiating.
Mr. & Mrs. Hames Sand are parents of a son born Saturday, October 10 at Sacred Heart Hospital.
The Marcus Fire Department observed Fire Prevention Week by responding to a fire in the trailer home of Darlene Means on th enorth edge of Marcus. Defective wiring caused the trouble but did little damage.

Mrs. Ben Ohlendorf, 77, passed away Sunday, October 12 at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee.
Mrs. George Pratt, 81, of Kingsley, passed away Wednesday, October 8 at Kingsley. She was the mother of Mrs. Wendell Rainboth.
Sunday, October 5 was the open house for Mr. & Mrs. Art Berg of Cleghorn who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Barry Hagey of Minneapolis are the parents of their first child, a daughter, born Friday, October 3 at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Mrs. Fred Deichmann entertained a group of ladies in her home Saturday afternoon. October 11 to honor her mother Mrs. Rachel Addy on her 83rd birthday.
50 Years Ago -1974
Myrtle Benedict, 79, away Tuesday morning October 15, in the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee following a short illness. She was a lifelong resident of Marcus.
Remsen’s first annual Oktoberfest is planned for Saturday, October 26.
Jim and Tiny Gill of Meriden will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with a dance to be held at the Avalon Ballroom in Remsen on Saturday, Ballroom in Remsen on Saturday, October 19.
Mr. & Mrs. James Sanow of Marcus are parents of a daughter born October 9 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.
Irene Meyer, a senior at Marcus Community School was recently notified that she is to be featured in the Eighth Annual Edition of Who’s Who Among American High School 73-74, the largest student award publication in the nation.
Mr. & Mrs. Barry Hagey of Waseca, Minnesota are parents of a daughter born October 7.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Jay Peters of Meriden, Iowa will be 90 years old on Monday, October 22. He would enjoy receiving cards from his friends for the occasion.
Mr. & Mrs. Gary Mishler of Spencer are parents of a daughter born October 11 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.
Kathy Andrews, daughter of Mrs. Margaret Andrews of Marcus, will be among a special group of scholars honored at a special convocation at College of Saint Mary in Omaha during Family Weekend at the College.
Funeral services were held at St. Pancration Catholic Church in Lakewood, CA on Friday, October 5 for Howard Joseph Flanagan who died on October 1 at Community Hospital, Long Beach.
As advance 90th birthday open house for Rose Lage will be held on Sunday, November 4 at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus.
