110 Years Ago – 1914
Announcement was made in St. Mary’s Catholic church in Remsen last Sunday of the approaching marriage of the popular editor of the Remsen Bell Enterprise, Eugene Kieffer to Miss Emma Kass the well known merchant.
105 Years Ago -1919
All during the war the home folks song, “When the Boys Come Home” and promised that they would have one real holiday to celebrate the gladsom occasion. Nearly all the boys returned home from serve and a homecoming of great proportions will be staged in Marcus on Thursday afternoon and evening on October 9 to which all the boys and their friends are invited.
K. Bancroft has announced that he will open up a meat market in the Flaherty and Bancroft building now occupied by the panatorium. November 1. Mr. Bancroft is a pioneer meat market man, having been in business in this city for many years until last spring when the shop was closed.
Little Roman Treinen, the six year old grandson of Mrs. Treinen, had the misfortune to break his leg one day last week. He was run over by a boy riding a bicycle.
Francis Cline and the steering wheel of his Ford car mixe dwhile hw was taking a business trip to Fielding last Saturday afternoon and the car came out of second. The steering wheel became loose and the car turned turtle over an embankment. Francis escaped luckly with only slight injury to his hand. The car was badly damaged.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mr. & Mrs. James Jul are the proud parents of a daughter who arrived Friday, September 30.
Probably the longest cement sidewalk ever built by a property owner in Marcus is now being laid on the property of Mrs. Anna Radcliffe. The walk extends from the George Ward home on Locust Street to the lot owned by Mrs. I.C. Thompson.
A son was born Saturday, October 4 in the LeMars hospital to Mr. & Mrs. C.P. Dorr.
Peters Brothers have installed a new gasoline dispensary said to be the last word in this kind of a machine. It is equipped with automatic air lift and is a self filling device. It is operated by air pressure and is said to be a great time saver.
Marcus new park given to the city by V.Sjostrom, will be formally dedicated with appropriate ceremonies on next Thursday, October 16. Following the ceremony, the Marcus Fat Men will cross bats with the Marcus Leans.
95 Years Ago -1929
One hundred and fifty people gathered around the festive board Tuesday evening for the annual Pilot rock Plowing Match and County Breeders Association banquet.
Seventy eight friends and neighbors of Mr. & Mrs Fred Wilkens gathered at their home Sunday and gave them a pleasant surprise in honor of their silver wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. J.W. Nield received word from their son James, law student at the University of Iowa, that he has received a scholarship for his lat year’s work which will be applied this year. He was one of six law students at Iowa to receive the scholarship.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom King are the parents of a son born Thursday, October 3.
J.T. Forristal who has acted in the capacity of manager at the Farmers Elevator, has resigned and expects to leave Marcus in the next week or so as soon as the vacancy has been filled. Mr. Forristal, with his wife and family, will locate in Sioux City.
85 Years Ago -1939
Dr. Charles Backer, noted lecturer, is coming to Marcus October 13 under the auspices fo the Marcus Rotary Club.
Gerald Goodburn, son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Goodburn, had the misfortune to break his arm in two places Tuesday afternoon while playing at school.
A fireof undertermined origin practically destroyed the barn on the property owned by the heirs of the Liggett estate Friday afternoon. The fire department extinguished the blaze using a considerable amount of water.
Two Marcus football players are out of the lineup due to injuries received the past week. Jim Radcliffe, center recevied a broken leg in the Cherokee game. At practice on Tuesday night Vernon Donner received a fractured collar bone.
Loye Birch and Phyllis Hodgin, who are attending Beauty School in Sioux City, were weekend visitors in the Dr. Knoop’s home at LeMars and also visited in Marcus Sunday night.
Adolph Groepper will hold his 38th sale of spotted Poland China hogs Tuesday, October 10 at his farm southwest of Marcus.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Frederick Michael, the infant son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Francks Jr. Phm 2/C was born Sunday, September 24, at 7:30 am and died at 12:20 pm at Portmonth, Virginia hospital.
Funeral services for John Fechter were held in Spencer on Saturday, September 23, at the Cobb Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Parker of the Congregational Church officiating.
The ordination of Rev. Dalles Johnson took place in Rev. Johnson;s home church, Oliver Presbyterian Chruch, Minneapolis, Minnesota Tuesday, September.
Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Scott moved their household furniture Tuesday to Manson where Mr. Scott has accepted a position as manager of the elevator.
75 Years Ago -1949
W.L. Gund for nearly 40 years treasurer of the town of Marcus, has resigned the office effective October 1.
The Marcus Hardware is advertising it’s fifth anniversary sale in this issue of the News to run from this Saturday through Saturday, October 15. The present owner Russell Mouw, came to Marcus in October 1944, buying the hardware from the estate of Fred Phillips of Remsen, Mr. Mouw came here from Cherokee where he had been in the employment of the IPS Company.
The Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters will observe their golden jubilee Sunday, October 9. The Sacred Heart Court No 405 was organized in 1899 and held their first meetings in the old Opera House which was formerly located on the property where the George Treinen and Mrs. Anna Carey residences now stand.
The garage on the Jake Roseen place a the south end of Main Street and its contents including a 1936 Plymouth and a number of garden tools, were completely destroyed by fire shortly after midnight Saturday. The care belonged to Edgar Roseen.
70 Years Ago -1954
Paul Means, 25 of Marcus, died Tuesday, October 5 at Cherokee after several weeks of illness. Paul is a son of Mr. & Mrs. H.E. Means of Struble and formerly of Marcus.
David Anderson, 72 a former resident of Marcus, died Friday, October 1 in Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, Illinois. He had made his home at Tinley Park, Illinois since leaving Marcus in 1941.
Mr. & Mrs. Eldon Addy are the parents of a daughter born Monday, October 4 in Sacred Heart hospital at LeMars.
Mrs. Frances Clark, 83 of Anthon, died Wednesday morning, September 29 at the Dill Nursing Home after a short illness.
The American Legion will again sponsor essay contest in the two Marcus schools during the coming November according to a decision made at Tuesday evening’s meeting.
65 Years Ago -1959
John Lawrence Busch, son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Busch, passed away suddenly early Friday, September 25. He was 18 years old at the time of his death.
Mrs. Olive Birch, 75 passed away Saturday morning September 26 in Rochester, Minnesota following an illness.
E.E. Evans, Marcus Implement dealer has received word that he has won a trip to Philadelphia and New York as a result of having sold the most Oliver tractors than any other dealer in the northwest Iowa block.
This Saturday morning, the Marcus Community school marching band consisting of 36 members will participate in the annual Morningside College band day.
60 Years Ago -1964
Mr. & Mrs. James Wilcox of Cleghorn are parents of a daughter born Monday, September 14 at the Methodist hospital in Sioux City.
Jacob Roseen, 89 of Marcus, died Monday morning in Cherokee after a lingering illness.
The Rev. Carl Grondox will be installed as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cleghorn and of the Mount Pleasant Community Presbyterian Church.
Lloyd Barnes, who has completed 50 years of membership in Seba Lodge No. 463, A.F. and A.M. Marcus was guest of honor at a special recognition night held in the Masonic Temple September 24 at which he was presented a 50 year certificate and pin.
Mrs. Jack Gordon was honored Monday afternoon at a surprise farewell party.
Mr. & Mrs. Orville Kooistra of Rock Valley are the parents of a daughter born Monday, September 21, at Sioux City.
55 Years Ago -1969
Raymon Shoemaker, 33 of McHenry, Illinois was laid to rest in Holy Name Cemetery here Wednesday, beside a sister who had proceeded him in death a number of years ago.
Mrs. Cletus Gravenish has purchased The Coffee Cup here from Mr. Gus Willems taking over its operation Wednesday.
Mrs. Grover Shubert was honored at a party in her home Saturday, September 27 in observance of her 75th birthday.
Mrs. L. James Smith, the former Gayle Flanagan daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Earl Flanagan, has received a promotion as assistant operations officer at City National Bank, Torrance, California.
Mrs. Viviann Wiedemeier entertained at a birthday party Thursday, September 26 honoring Mrs. Lawrence Bass.
50 Years Ago -1974
Aloysius Staver, age 65 who lived in Cherokee, died at his home Thursday noon. His death was sudden and unexpected.
Vandalism seems to be running rampant here in Marcus with the derailing of seven cars and three diesel engines last Friday night, September 27. According to officials a switch lock was broken to make the rail switch and then the signal light reversed to show a clear and straight track.
Mr. & Mr.s Ray Hansen are parents of a daughter born Monday, September 23.
Marcus got back on the winning track by defeating Sergeant Bluff 14-8 there last Friday. Ray Addy scored in the first quarter on a 55 yard punt return. In the third quarter John Bentz scored on a 1 yard plunge. Addy was successful in kicking both extra points to round out the Marcus scoring attack.
Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Ehrp of Marshall, Minnesota are the parents of a son born September 29.
45 Years Ago – 1979
John Cliffort Riemers of rural Marcus passed away last Sunday morning September 30 at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Sioux City after an extended illness.
Joe Bird, son of the Bill Birds of Marcus, was selected to be a part of the homecoming royalty of Morningside College.
Tim and Janet Galles of Marcus are the proud parents of a baby boy born Monday, September 24 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Howard Flanagan, Lakewood, California, former Marcus resident and business man, passed away Monday afternoon of a sudden heart attack while playing golf.
Leo Mitchell of North Glen, Colorado, a former resident of the Cleghorn and Paullina communities, will observe his 80th birthday October 6.
