110 Years Ago – 1914
The most sensation catch of the season at West Okoboji Lake was made at Dixson’s Beach on Thursday, September 17 by George Hooper of Marcus when he landed from his dock a large amber eel measuring 44 inches in length and weighing between 7 and 8 pounds. It was a fine specimen and is said to be the only one of this specimen ever known to have been taken from the lake.
The lecture course committee will begin a canvass this week for the sale of season tickets for the Marcus 1914-15 lecture course. People interested in high class entertainment here should respond by purchasing tickets.
105 Years Ago -1919
It will be remembered by our readers that Joe Hey recently resigned his position with Louis Seeger in the harness and repair business, which he has held for the past 18 years. His resignation was made for the purpose of seeking a new location where he could engage in business for himself but after and extended tour of the eastern part of the state, returned home with the statement that in all his travels saw no place that looked as good to him as Marcus. Mr. Hey has long felt that there is room in Marcus for another harness and repair ship and has decided to engage in this business an dhas arranged to open up a new shop in the old post office building on Main Street.
Merle French left Monday for Iowa City to resume his studies in the medical department of the state university. Merle will receive his degree in March.
Friends of Mr. & Mrs. Axel Sjostrom former Marcus residents, will be interested in learning that htye have adopted a five year old boy.
Joe, the young son of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Marquis, who has been ill with pneumonia has recovered.
Miss Merna Dose came to the home of Mr. & Mrs. john Dose to stay an undetermined number of years and to enjoy the comforts of this home.
100 Years Ago – 1924
The Marcus News takes pleasure in the installation of a brand new deluxe Model C Intertype machine. The News comes to its readers this week set by the new intertype which cost several thousand dollars to install.
Mr. & Mrs. John Williams departed by auto Monday morning for Pasadena, California where they will spend the winter. Mr. Williams has made five trips this way and prefers that mode of traveling to the palace cars.
New corn cribs are being erected this week on the John Brady and Mrs. Rosa Ryan farms.
Robert Dorr and Horace Armbruster of the city departed Monday for Mankato Commercial College.
Junior Boss, son of Mr. & Mrs. J.C. Boss was an honored guest at a party held in the primary room on Wednesday afternoon, the occasion being his seventh birthday. Each o fthe 44 pupils was served to an individual birthday cake decorated with a single lighted candle.
Cards have been received announcing the birth of Winston Freemon to Mr. &Mrs. John Hyndman at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee September 25.
95 Years Ago -1929
Marcus people were pleased to learn that Rev. E.J. Plummer has been reassigned to the Methodist Episcopal Church here for another year’s pastorate by the Northwest Iowa conference at Eagle Grove, Monday.
A gold medal for the member of the county baby beef club showing the best all around membership in 1919 was awarded to Lloyd Thompson of Aurelia who was the owner fo the grand champion baby beef selected at the Pilot Rock Plowing Match.
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Ohlendorf, who moved into their new home last week were given a house warming Friday by fifty of their friends and neighbors. The guests brought dinner with them and served cafeteria style at noon.
A.J. Thompson accompanied by Rex Rosburg and Everett Delaney left Tuesday for Leech Lake, Minnesota, where they will spend a week at pike fishing. Leech Lake has been the mecca for several fishermen in this community and good catches of nice pike are to be expected.
85 Years Ago -1939
New sidewalks are being laid today just south of the Farmers State Bank building.
Mrs. Chris Hohbach was claimed by death Wednesday afternoon at her home following an illness of just a few weeks.
Mr. & Mrs. W.W. Bass, Jean and Mr. & Mrs. Charles Bass returned Sunday from Lethbridge, Canada where they went to attend the funeral of John Bass the previous Monday.
Thirty-three boys are now in Coach Joe Yoder’s football squad. Interest has been gaining in the sport at the high school with the result of additions to the squad since the first week of school.
Resealing of corn in Amherst and Marcus township is getting underway, according to Fred Mossman who is the sealer for this townships.
Felix Treinen and Hugh, Bill Mueller and Ed Meylor returned home Tuesday evening from a three day fishing trip to Minnesota.
80 Years Ago – 1944
The Farmers Elevator of Marcus will operate under new management after October 1 with Harold Stienjes of Larrabee replacing Ralph Scott who has accepted a similar position at Manson, Iowa.
Mrs. Frank Schmillen was honored on her birthday last Wednesday when relatives came to help celebrate.
A number of relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Claus Schroeder Friday evening in honor of their 29th wedding anniversary.
A daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Seel Sunday morning September 24 at the Sacred Heart Hospital.
Friends of Mr. & Mrs. Al Olson honored them at a farewell party Saturday night.
Petty Officer and Mrs. Herman Fischer of Norfolk, Virginia are announcing the birth of a son born to them Friday, September 22.
75 Years Ago -1949
Miss Shirley Briggs, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Grances Briggs of Remsen has been named a member of the Collegian Reporter staff at Morningside College, Sioux City.
Miss Kate Jungers, 79, passed away Tuesday morning in the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. She was a pioneer resident of Marcus coming to this community with her parents as a child.
October 1 will mark 30th anniversary of Joe Hey of Marcus in a business that is growing rare now a day- that of the harness maker.
Corn crop prospects in this section haven been lowered to a marked degree in the past few days with corn borer damage becoming apparent in the form of down corn. The wind Sunday snapped off a great deal of corn that had already been weakened by borers in the shank and the damage is estimated at far previous expectation.
Robert Pitts has accepted a position as salesman for the Marcus Hardware.
70 Years Ago -1954
Douglas Mott, son of Mrs. Lois Mott and Wilmer Ogren left Wednesday morning for service in the Air Corps.
Chris Juhl, a resident of the Marcus community his entire life passed away Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Dr. and Mrs. C.H. Gutenkauf of Des Moines are the parents of a daughter born Thursday morning, September 30.
The new Marcus Bakery will open its doors for business this Friday morning in the Niemann Building just north of Johnson’s Hardware.
65 Years Ago -1959
Harold Hagart, who comes here from Remsen, will take over the management of the Hatz Frozen Food Center here October 1.
The junior high science class of the public school visited the Marcus water plant Tuesday where Superintendent Marion Bird and Dr. M.R. Nelson explained and demonstrated the plumbing and filtering system.
The new Marcus Econ-O-Wash operated by Harry Nelson of Akron plans to open this Friday morning for business. It is located in the building just? North of Dixson’s “66” station near the south end of Marcus Street.
At a recent election of the senior class of St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing, Frances Lou Benedict was elected president.
60 Years Ago -1964
Emil Ebert, 65, died Wednesday, September 16 suddenly of a heart failure at his home on Frenton Street here in Marcus.
The sale of Fred’s Place in Marcus was announced this week. New owners is Jeanette Juhl, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Juhl and she will be the youngest member of the Marcus business circle.
Mrs. Guy Rae was honored Thursday afternoon on the occasion of her birthday by several neighborhood ladies.
David Joslin, son of Mr. & Mrs. Delbert Joslin, completed his basic training September 4 at the Recruit Training Command, Naval Training Center, San Diego, California.
The Marcus Eagles wasted little time last Friday night in putting the Willow game on ice scoring two quick touchdowns and going on to win 47 to 0. Larry Galvin led the Marcus scoring parade with 4 touchdowns. Also scoring were quarterback Denny Boots and fullback Steve Schmillen.
55 Years Ago -1969
Debra Davis and John Mayer were queen and king at the Marcus homecoming.
Bernard Nelson, 8 of Marcus, died Monday at Cherokee following a lingering illness.
The Marcus Jaycees will host the first annual Marcus demolition derby Sunday afternoon at the playground.
Frank Leesley, 81 born and raised at Washta, died Thursday, September 18 in a Sioux City Hospital. He also lived in Kingsley and farmed near Oto, retiring in 1986 to Sioux City.
Mikel Schmillen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Schmillen of Marcus, is a 6 ft. 160 lb. Defensive halfback on the Westmar College football squad. He is after his third Westmar football letter.
50 Years Ago -1974
Services for Mrs. Anna Mossman, 89, were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church Rev. F.W. Shreve officiated and burial was in the Marcus Cemetery. Mrs. Mossman passed away Sunday, September 22 at the hospital in LeMars after a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Letsche of Marcus are the proud parents of a son born September 19.
The Marcus defensive team was able to hold Remsen-Union top runner Clark Treinen to less than half his former game average last Friday night here. However, Marcus ended up on the short end of the 10-6 score for their lost of the year.
Mrs. Ray Drefke hosted a farewell coffee in her home on Friday afternoon honoring Mrs. Gary Kluver.
Walt Disney’s “Snowball Express” will be shown this weekend at the Marland.
Mr. & Mrs. Neal Bork of Cherokee became parents of their first child, a son, born September 20 at SVMH Cherokee.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Mr. & Mrs. Juhl are the proud parents of twin boys born Saturday, September 15 at the Orange City Hospital.
Jim’s Farm Service, Inc will hold a Grand Opening this Saturday, September 29 from 2:00 – 9:00 p, at their new location at the west end of Cedar Street.
Oscar Heline, 89 of Marcus, died Sunday, September 23 at his residence of an extended illness.
David Bolfik, 106 South Elm St has qualified as a member of the 1979 Top Club of New York Life Insurance Company.
