110 Years Ago – 1914
Excavation for the Catholic school building was completed last week and the material is here for the foundation. Other material is expected to arrive soon.
Miss Blanche Ulstad left Friday for a visit with her sister at Raymond, SD.
Few people in Amherst township are aware that a canning factory is a new local industry. Forrest and Robert Peters, aged 16 and 14 respectively are the promoters of a new factory for canning tomatoes, Their equipment includes a stove, a cooker, soldering, irons and torches. They have already canned 300 of the 1,000 they expected to place on the market.
Miss Winnie Toomex returned home Sunday from Rochester, Minnesota where she spent the past four weeks receiving treatments at the Mayo hospital.
105 Years Ago -1919
Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Dickson left yesterday morning for Lincoln , NE to attend the funeral of their grandson, the 12 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. M. Bradley. The boy followed the custom of taking a morning plunge in an out door pool. The storm of the night before had blown down and electric wire of high voltage the contact which caused his death.
Word has been received of the birth of a son to Mr. & Mrs. Earl Wirt of near Parker, SD, Saturday, August 9.
Most of the threshing is done and the best yield of oats were heard reported was Ralph Cave’s forty acres piece which produced 52 bushels per acre.
Charles Quirin shipped a carload of stallions to Mr. Dunham at Wayne, Illinois last Saturday. Mr. Dunham is one of the largest importers of horses in the US but finds in the Quirin barn better bred horses than can be had in the war ruined countries of Europe.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Frolich are the proud parents of a fine baby boy. This is the third son.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Ruth Rosburg was the honored guest at a surprise party given by several of her friends at the home of Miss Grace Wienk Monday evening August 11.
Mrs. Harvey Geibe has been nursing a very bad hand the past week.
Mrs. J.A. Michaelson and daughter Arleen returned last week from an extended visit at Arlington, Wisconson.
95 Years Ago -1929
Tom Knox is having on thrill after another. Tuesday, Dr. T.C. Knox received word that Tom in company with another young man, sailed for Europe on Monday of this week.
Joe Waller, a farmer living near Fielding, suffered a painful accident Saturday. A team of horses which were hitched to a spreader became frightened and before Mr. Waller could get hold of the reins, they knocked him down and the wheel of the spreader ran over his body. Both bones were broken in his right leg and one of his arms were badly injured.
Oscar Dorr and Lars Mahler left Monday on a trip to the Black Hills, Yellowstone Park and California. The boys plan to be gone for a month.
The J.P. Beck Company of Marcus has recently installed in their store a ventilating system that adds much to the comfort and health of those in the building.
Thieves entered the John Prunty farm home north of Cleghorn sometime between two and four o’clock Friday afternoon while the family was away. The radio, two sits of clothing, two billfold with checks and change amounting to $15.00 were taken.
85 Years Ago -1939
Registration of high school students for the coming school year will be on August 22 and 23. School will open September 4.
John Sand returned home today from the St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City.
Mrs. Ray Peters and her sister Mrs. Ella Sibeck and Mary Jane will leave Sunday for a two week trip to eastern points.
Dorothy Rose Cave is improving at the hospital in Rochester, Minnesota following a serious illness.
A hog house on the I.C. Edmonds farm in Rock township burned to the ground Friday.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Charles Hinspeter, retired farmer living with his son Ira, two miles north and two miles west of Marcus was seriously ill Saturday and passed away at the Sacred Heart Hospital on the following Wednesday, August 2 at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 16 days.
Charles Swindle had the misfortune to break his collar bone and Francis Briggs received injuries to his foot Friday morning when a load of hay on which they were riding tipped over.
Remsen, and the community in general mourn the passing of Fred Phillips, one of the leading businessmen in the town and resident there 35 years. Mr. Phillips died at his home Thursday evening following a heart attack.
After a lingering illness Mrs. Ida Georges died at her home August 6.
Mrs. Ludwig Anderson, Mrs. Henry Anderson and Mrs, Edwin Anderson were hostesses to a surprise birthday party last Wednesday, August 9 honoring Mrs. Lars Anderson on her 79th birthday.
75 Years Ago -1949
The “News” has received the first issue of the “Sunbeam” magazine published by Mrs. Roy Gable of Sioux City. Mrs. Gable was formerly Dorothy Cave, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Merle Cave of Marcus.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday in Holy Name Church in Marcus for Mrs. Hope Niemann.
John Keilhorn, about 40, was found dead at his farm home seven miles southwest of Marcus Thursday morning.
The 28 head of feeder pigs that strayed to the Lawrence Johnson farm several weeks ago proved to be the property of a neighbor, Vern Barnes.
Francis Bierman, who tenants the M.F. Joynt farm four miles south of Marcus, received a broken right collar bone and injuries about the chest Friday morning when a tractor turned over on him. He was mowing weeds along the road at the time.
70 Years Ago -1954
Mary Ellen Kelly received an induction notice from the Navy. She is now a sailor and an honorary crew member of the Battleship Iowa.
Plans and preparations for the eighteenth annual fair are approaching completion, according to Manager C.W. Samuelson.
A large crowd of parents and friends gathered at the playground last Thursday night for the annual Family Night.
The 48th annual Plowing Match will be held at its new permanent site on the south edge of Cherokee, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
Mrs. George Johnson of Aberdeen, SD, mother of Mrs, C.W. Samuelson of Marcus, passed away Sunday following an operation.

Louis Weber and son of Marcus have entered eight Shorthorns in the national livestock show which will be a feature of the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines August 28 to September 6.
John Julius, son of Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Julius and Marcus fanciest fancy diver won the Midwet AAU diving championship for 13 and 14 years olds at Lincoln, Nebraska last Sunday.
Father Leo McCoy was honored at a farewell party given by the members of the parish Wednesday evening, August 12.
Carl Anderson, 79 and resident of this community for 36 years, passed away Thursday, August 6 at the LeMars hospital after a brief illness.
Friday afternoon the M.M. Club honored Mrs. Emma Blietz on her 79th birthday which was Sunday, August 9.
60 Years Ago -1964
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Jenks of Elkhart, Indiana proudly announce the arrival of a baby boy in their home.
Thomas Carney, 76 and longtime resident of the Marcus Community, passed away Monday, August 10 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee where he had been hospitalized for two weeks.
Mr. & Mrs. Lester Dorr, 926 First Ave SE, LeMars plan an open house in observance of their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, August 16.
O.S. Nelson, 68 and well known Cherokee County farmer, died at a Cherokee hospital Saturday morning after a brief illness.
W.W.I. Barracks and Auxiliary will have a picnic Sunday, August 16 at 11 a.m. at Martin Access park east of Larrabee.

Mrs. Gust (Lillian) Johnson will be honored on her 80th birthday at an open house Sunday afternoon August 17.
Richard Walker was graduated Friday, August 1 from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls with a bachelor of arts degree in business education.
Marine Lance Corporal Dennis Horstman, son of Mrs. Bill Horstman of Marcus, was promoted to his present rank while serving in Vietnam with the Second Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment, First Marine Division.
Rog Nelson, Marv Simons, Willie Husman and Curt Grauer attending the football game in Minneapolis Saturday. Playing were the Denver Broncos and the Minnesota Vikings.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Hanson and Michele were Sunday supper guests in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Hanson in Cherokee.

Mr. & Mrs. Glenn Cave of Cherokee will observe their 25th wedding anniversary August 18 with an open house.
Several relatives and friends gathered together the evening of August 1 to honor Mr. & Mrs. D.C. Drefke on their 40th wedding anniversary.
Vandalism in a most degrading form was displayed by the aerosol paint spraying of the Marcus Bath House, the west of the new high school, and doors to Holy Name gym, the tank of the water tower and finally the man’s car.
Miss Debby Fisher, professional Scout Council and Director of Camp of the Hills the past two summers, will be honored by the Board at a tea on August 18.
Mr. & Mrs. Ben Hueser of Quimby will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, August 18 at an open house.

Mrs. John Mauer, 90 of rural Cleghorn died Wednesday, August 8 in a Cherokee nursing home after a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. J. Ryes Rodriquez are the parents of a son born August 3 at Homstead, FL.
Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Braun, Sr of Alton will celebrate 25 years of marriage on Sunday, August 19.
On Friday evening neighbors and friends honored Mr. & Mrs. Pat Tracey and family with a house warming.
Mrs. Harold Sterman has been appointed to lead local volunteers in organizing the 1979 Breath of Life campaign in Marcus according to Raymond A Palis, president of the Iowa Chapter of the Custic Fibrosis Foundation.
