110 Years Ago – 1914
A brick work for the new Marcus Cooperative Company began the first of last week and the work is being rapidly pushed in order that building will be finished according to the contract.
About 8,000 gallons of oil were used on the main and side streets of Marcus this week and a special oil wagon for the purpose was shipped here to distribute the oil.
Work has started on the erection of an addition to the house on the farm owned by the Don Gregg estate in Tilden Township.
Nick Rassel has hauled lumber from Marcus for the erection of a large barn on the Rassel farm in Tilden Township. The barn will be 62 feet long and 40 feet wide.
K.N. Knox’s residence is practically completed. It is 30×40 feet in size and has three rooms in the second story, four rooms and bath on the first story and five rooms in the basement. It is the only hallow wall steel reinforced concrete house in the country.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Charien Furguson on Saturday, a son.
105 Years Ago -1919
Clinton Armburster had the misfortune to break his collar bone while playing ball. The accident was the result of bumping into Stanley Smith while both were trying to catch a “fly”
Francis Swindle of Cleghorn won the Cherokee County boys livestock judging contest and will receive the free trip to the boys camp at the state fair. Swindle secured 1284 points out of a possible 1540. Leo Wendt of Marcus was the second with 1253 points.
The George Hoxsie family were made glad yesterday by the receipt of a message stating that their son, Sherman Hoxsie landed at New Port News August 1 from overseas.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Francis Swindle has been elected to teach the Simpson Bethel consolidated school often called Peters school, located five miles south of Marcus. Miss Margaret will teach the Peters school located southwest of town.
Ross Simons in company with his son, Kenneth, went to Ames last Friday to make arrangements for the latter to attend college this fall.
G.A. Druyor returned last week from Port Clinton, Ohio where he was called by the death of his father.
Mr. & Mrs. Archie Brink accompanied by Miss Olive Sweet went to thee Lakes Sunday where they were entertained by Mr. & Mrs. W.D. Hazen who have a cottage there.
A baby boy was born to Mr. & Mrs. Frank Mansfield at Sioux Valley Hospital Wednesday night.
95 Years Ago -1929
A good rain visited this section Sunday following a continued dry spell. While coming a little late to be of the most benefit, it will greatly aid much of the corn.
Two Cleghorn youths, Lester Gibson, 23 son of Mr. & Mrs. George Gibson and Lloyd Mitchell, 23 son of Mr. & Mrs. John Mitchell lost their lives Thursday night in the pit on the Gund Farm southeast of Marcus. Louis Collins of Marcus located the bodies in the water Friday, Funeral services were held Sunday.
Mrs. John Williams suffered a broken right arm on Monday of last week. She was upstairs when the accident occurred, standing near the steps. She slipped, falling nine steps.
Eleanor Flaherty arrived home Friday from Minneapolis where she has been attending the Minnesota School of Business since last October. Miss Flaherty has had a position with the Sears and Roebuck wholesale house for the past few weeks.
F.H. Fry of East Orange Township has circular barn on his farm that is laid out far different from the ordinary barn in this section. It is 90 feet in diameter and has two floors, the lower being for cattle while the other holds grain, feed and hay.
85 Years Ago -1939
The fire department was called to the Clifford Smith home Monday morning. The fire originated with a can of gasoline in the kitchen. The damage was estimated at $100.
The Legion Junior baseball team defeated the Moville team on the local diamond Sunday by a score of 5 to 3.
The Grauer Bowling Alley will open for their second season next Saturday, August 12.
Robert Addy, son of Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Addy and Charles Osborn went to Ames Monday to make their preparation for enrolling in Iowa State College this fall.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Ida Kathryn Georges, 75, passed away Sunday morning August 6 at her home.
Mrs. Theresia Richer Ernest passed away Wednesday morning after an extended illness.
Lt. Virgil Wirt has been promoted to First Lieutenant. He has been transferred to France according to word received here by his wife.
Joe Weber, son of Mr. & Mrs. Amos Weber is now stationed at San Marcos, Texas.
Word has received here by relatives of the death of Mrs. Carl Weis, the former hazel Goodburn of Lincoln, NE. She passed away August 8 after a short illness in a hospital in Omaha.
The amount of $493.40 was collected for a month of July by the Women’s Division of the War Finance Committee as reported by chairman, Mrs. Ted Treinen.
75 Years Ago -1949
In Tuesday evenings final count Vonita Gordon of Meriden reigned victorious with 429,685 votes. Donna Fee of Cherokee was runner up with 327,871 votes. The girls will reign as Miss Cherokee County and Miss Columbia respectively at the Cherokee County Plowing March pageant to be held at Tomahawk field August 16-21.
Elmer Hansen, 71 and former Marcus resident, was laid to rest in the Marcus-Amherst Cemetery Tuesday afternoon.
Ed Miller has bought the interest of Irvin Nielsen in the Marcus plumbing Company here.
The rural school building recently purchased by the public school board was moved to the school property last week where it is being prepared for use as a music room.
At last report no one had claimed the 28 feeder pigs that appeared at the Lawrence Johnson farm two weeks ago. The theory has been advanced that they had been stolen at some distant place and the thief changed his mind or last his nerve and turned them loose.
70 Years Ago -1954
A new bakery will open for business in Marcus about October 1 according to present plans of Gerhardt Baumann of Cherokee, operator of Baumann’s Home bakery there.
Eldon Addy of Marcus has purchased a partnership in the Nielsen Electric Shop from Albert Nielsen who has operated the business for a number of years.
Over 150 people attended the opening house at the Dill Nursing Home here Sunday, August 1.The home, operated by Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Dill, has been rejuvenated and enlarged to a comfortable and attractive place for thee old folks and Mr. & Mrs. Dill are to be congratulated on the improvements made since they purchased the home.
Shareholders of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator of Marcus approved the proposed construction of a quart million bushel grain elevator at the associations annual meeting here Saturday evening. The vote was 96 to 14.
65 Years Ago -1959
John Johnson of Paullina died Monday at his home after a long illness.
Over four inches of rain, accompanied by high winds and some hall struck this community early Sunday morning. The rain was more than welcome, but its traveling companion did a lot of damage in the are from Highway 5 and 3 south for several miles.
Peter Petersen, 84 long time resident of the Cleghorn Marcus vicinity died Tuesday evening August 4 at LeMars following a lingering illness.
M.W. McCoy has taken over full management of the Nelson Hatchery in Marcus according to announcement made this week by Ernest Nelson owner of the business.
Mrs. Carl Reed was the winner of the colonial bedspread given Saturday evening by Nagle’s Apparel.
Robert Boyd, 75 who had made his home at the Marcus hotel for the past several years, died Saturday, August 2 at Sacred heart hospital in LeMars.
60 Years Ago -1964
Remsen will celebrate the 75th anniversary of its incorporation with a three day celebration August 13-5 with the traditional parades old time costumes bearded contest and carnival with rides for five, ten and fifteen cents.
One of Marcus best known business changed when Mike Enright, formerly of Macomb Illinois bought Clarkson’s IGA Food Market.
Mr. & Mrs. Edward Meehan of Minneapolis, Minnesota are parents of a daughter born Thursday, July 23.
John Galigan, 84 passed away Sunday morning, August 2 at his farm home near Marcus.
Miss Karen Haahr, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jens Haahr, Marcus will graduate from Emmanuel Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska, Friday, August 7.
55 Years Ago -1969
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Jacobson of Larrabee will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, August 17 with an open house at the Larrabee Schoolhouse.
Lyle Quirin, 59 of Marcus, passed away Saturday, August 2 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Vincent Garvin were honored on their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house at Holy Name hall Sunday, July 27.
An open house to honor Mrs. Marie Specht on her 89th birthday will be held Sunday, August 17 at Peace Lutheran Church parlors.
50 Years Ago -1974
In honor of the 35th wedding anniversary of Rev. and Mrs Edgar Streufert and the 35th anniversary of his ordination in to the holy ministry, the congregation of Peace Lutheran Church will hold an open house in the church parlors on Sunday, August 11.
Mrs. Lovell Simons, 83 of Marcus died August 6 in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Lee O’Brien of Green Bay, Wisconsin are the parents of a baby girl born Monday, August 5.
Mark Wilcox, son of Mr. & Mrs. Earnest Wilcox, Route 2, Marcus has been given a $400 Farmland Industries Scholarship at Iowa State University for the 1974-75 academic year.
Fifty guests and members enjoyed an afternoon of viewing hobbies and crafts bought in for display to the Senior Citizen’s meeting Wednesday, July 31.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Charleton Rassel, 11 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Rassel passed away Tuesday afternoon following an accident when he fell from his bicycle.
A house warming party was held August 1 in the new home of Verdine and Edna Ehrp of Remsen.
Jan Nenortas, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Kass of Remsen, graduated from Western Iowa Tech Community college on August 3 with a diploma in mechanical drafting.
Donald Baumgardener, age 63 of Tacoma, Washington, passed away Saturday, August 4. He was the brother of Merle and Russel Baummgardner of Marcus.
Marcus Snow-Birds enjoyed a weekend outing at Little Sioux Park at Correctionville.
