Personal Mention
by Elaine Rassel Clean up day was a couple of weeks ago. I heard that Fran Briggs lost her bench that had books she shared with others. She has had it on the ground between the curb and the sidewalk where it sat for a long time. I don’t know if someone thought it was a “free” item during the clean up time, but it was taken. This was not a cheap bench and if she had to have another made, it would be even more expensive. I understand it was found in another section of town facing the house that took it. Now she has it up by the side of her house.
Another clean up benefited Sioux City Ronald McDonald’s House. Since last fall the MMCRU Royals Student Leadership Group had been asking the public, as well as students, to save their pop tabs. One of the students made a video showing what the collection of pop tabs was going for and there were posters publicizing the collecting of pop tabs.
A basketball game was held for members of the communities to leave pop tabs behind. Then_the students in Mrs. Weber’s math class couldn’t pass up her offer of the student who brought in the most pop tabs, being able to benefit with a “homework pass”. (Who would want to pass this offer up?!)
The MMCRU Royals Impact took 218 pounds of pop tabs to Siouxland’s Ronald McDonald House. Upon delivery of their precious cargo, they were told how these pop tab benefited the Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald House is available for people to stay with no charge while their child is hospitalized in Sioux City. There are several Ronald McDonald Houses near the bigger hospitals. My granddaughter and husband were able to stay in one by Iowa City while their son was hospitalized. She encouraged family members to leave some laundry detergent with her so she could donate it to the House. It was one of the items that many parents left off in appreciation of the House providing a place for them to stay. Places to stay are not cheap and when a child is hospitalized for any reason, the parents have enough to worry about_that is when a Ronald McDonald House is their answer.
So, save your pop tabs for next year’s collection! (Wouldn’t it be something if local restaurants and bars “pulled” the tabs before bagging the cans up?)
This week has been a rainy one. There has just been enough moisture to make grass grow like never before! Mowing in between rains has had its problem.
Sunday (May 23) was the day most of the graduates of MMCRU had been looking forward to. Once they cross the stage to receive his/her diploma, the graduate leaves this place they have known for years. They are filled with hope, ambition, and challenges they haven’t encountered or imagined. Yes, there is also fear of the “unknown” but it can also be mixed with anticipation. Parents want their children to not only grow up but to continue to learn and mature into wonderful adults. The graduates leave home and spread their wings before they return. They have to go into the world to truly appreciate their family and friends for what they have done for the graduate to get them this far.
I received word that had reached Facebook that Jennifer was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital. I understand she was having seizures that shouldn’t have been. Hopefully they can find what is causing these.
Keep in your prayers and thoughts, those who are experiencing health problems, those who have lost loved ones to death, are having financial problems due to the pandemic, and mending your ways as far as distancing from family.
