110 Years Ago – 1914
There were only 106 votes cast in the Marcus township last Monday. Of this number 67 were Republican, 38 Democrats and one Progressive.
The businessman of Marcus invite the farmers to bring their children to town next Saturday afternoon and leave them at the Idle Hour Theatre to be amused with moving pictures until they are ready to go home.
Open meeting will be the program of the Y.W. girls for the summer season and it is believed it will prove highly successful.
Ralph Turner has rented the room over the News office and will open a pantatorium.
105 Years Ago -1919
Betty, the little daughter of Dr. and Mrs. F.E. Loomis, has been seriously ill with scarlet fever since last Friday and the home has been under quarantine Dr. M.F. Joynt and Drs. Warren and Kock from Sioux City, were in consultation on the case Sunday night.
Mrs. Lulu Crocke and Miss Ida Cox, who operate a home bakery, are in installing a new oven this week in their downtown establishment.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Charles Kracke, a daughter, Saturday, June 7.
Theodore Nieman left Tuesday morning for Iowa City to attend the summer school at the university. His little brother, John accompanied him for a few weeks treatment by a specialist for defective hearing.
100 Years Ago – 1924
A baby boy gladdened the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ralph McConnell on June 11.
Lee Sanchex has sold his barbershop to Sherman Hoxsie. Mr. Hoxsie will take possession this week.
Several young people enjoyed a wiener roast at the home of Miss Marjorie Mossman on Friday evening June 6.
The park will be opened to the public July 1 at which time a program will be planned for dedication.
95 Years Ago -1929
The Marcus Merchants lost a wild ball game in Paullina Sunday by a score of 7 to 9.
Miss Lorraine Halstrom of Cleghorn has the distinction of having led her class during the entire four years in high school.
Mrs. Patrick Brady, Mr. & Mrs. L.J. Givern, Miss Cora Gund and Francis O’Neill attend the golden jubliee celebration of Father John O’Riley’s 50th year of priesthood.
Committee appointed by the town council are interviewing tax payers in Marcus and getting their signatures to petition and checks which will make it possible to have our principle streets graveled under a cheaper method than if the work was ordered done by a resolution of necessity and the expensive taxed to the property.
The Marcus Municipal band will give its first initial concert of the season next Saturday night at eight o’clock.
85 Years Ago -1939
Fred Ritchie, Melvin Simons, Chris Miller and Dr. C.H. Swift returned Friday from a fishing trip to Pipestone Chain of Lakes in Canada. The report a catch of 100 fist.
George and Ronald Dorr and Frank Norris will go to Des Moines Monday, June 12 to attend the convention of Carrier Salesman.
A team pulling contest will be a feature of the livestock industrial show to be held in Marcus, August 31 and September 1. Final arrangements have been made by which the dynometer used in such tests will be here for the show.
The Lyric Theatre’s showing of the new picture, “Young Mr. Lincoln” Sunday and Monday enables Marcus folks to see the picture on the first day of its release along with those of the larger cities.
Francis Clarkson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Clarkson, has completed his schooling in aviation at Los Angles, CA and received his wings last Thursday, June 1.
80 Years Ago – 1944
The 5th War Loam Campaign, calling for the sale of $202,000.00 worth of war bonds in Iowa, will be launched throughout the state and county next Monday, June 12.
John Leavitt, son of Mr. & Mrs. Roger Leavitt Sr., was selected by the F.I. Goodburn Post of the American Legion of Marcus to attend the seventh annual Hawkeye Boys State at Grinnel College from June 4 to June 11.
Pfc James Smith of the Fairmont Air Base, Geneva, Nebraska, spent several days this week visiting with friends and relatives in Marcus.
75 Years Ago -1949
Mr. & Mrs. Aurthu Puhrmann, who lived north of Cleghorn, observed their 35th wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday afternoon May 29.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Hewicker entertained at a dinner and supper in honor of their crystal wedding anniversary.

The Marcus town council has purchased 75 stop signs and plans to make the through streets in Marcus.
Main Street, north and south, of course will be one of them, and the other two will run from the bank corner east to Highway 143.

Mrs. John Williams, 37, of Glendale, CA, died Friday, June 4 following an operation. She had been ill for some time. Mrs. Williams was a former resident of Marcus moving to California with her husband about four years ago.
Mr. & Mrs. John Delaney of Marcus, will observe their 50th wedding anniversary Tuesday, June 15.
Carl Hanson, 86 and former resident of this community passed away Monday, May 30 at his home in Gleenville, Minnesota.
Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Stick will hold an open house for their 25th wedding anniversary at their home.
Many relatives and friends gathered at the Methodist church in Marcus Sunday afternoon Jun e6, in honor of Mabel Pendelton Brown and George Brown, who were married in the Marcus church 25 years ago.
65 Years Ago -1959
Mrs. Gust Ahlgren, 65 of Quimby, died Tuesday June 2 after a six week illness.
George Wilson, treasurer of town of Marcus for the past nine years, presented his resignation to the town council at the regular meeting Monday evening. The Wilson family plans to move to Las Vegas soon.
Mrs. Mathilda Lenth, 82 and the widow of the late A.J. Lenth of Marcus, died Friday at a LeMars hospital.
Larry Slagter, operator of Larry’s Lanes here has announced the construction of a new six land bowling alley here. The bowling alley is at present in the basement of the Nelson Hatchery building.
A son was born May 25 to Mr. & Mrs. George O. Briggs, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital.

In a 2:30 pm service at Peace Lutheran Church, Sunday, May 24, the Rev. Gene R Richter was installed as pastor of Peace Lutheran Church.
Mr. & Mrs. Edward Nitzchke of Remsen, will observe their 50th wedding anniversary with open house at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen on Sunday, June 7.
Mr. & Mrs. Darrell Stowater are parents of a son born, Friday 22.
Mrs. Sophia Dorr was honored on her 92nd birthday, May 29 at a dinner held at Speelman’s in Cherokee.
Mrs. Caolyn Albrecht received her bachelor of arts degree in physical education at Westmar College.

Mrs. Prudence Michaelson, 85 of Marcus died suddenly early Monday morning at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Trudy Slagter, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Larry Slagter, will represent Marcus at Iowa Girls State at the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls June 8 through 14.
Ellen McGivern has announced that the law practice of her late husband L.J. McGivern, has been sold to Attorney Charles Knudson of Marcus effective June 1.
Mrs. Helmuth Anderson of Paullina a former resident of the Marcus community, passed away Tuesday evening at the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee after a long illness.

Theron C. “Spin” Lighter, 67 of Marcus, the retired editor of the Marcus News died May 31 at a Sibley hospital.
Mrs. George Wittkop, 69, of Remsen died May 22 at her home in Remsen after a brief illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Johnson of Albert City have adopted a baby girl.
Friends and relatives of Mrs. Anna Dorr are cordially invited to attend an open house on Sunday, June 9 in observance of her 90th birthday.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Mrs. Anna Wilson, daughter of Patrick and Francis Brady was born February 16, and passed away at the age of 84 on May 31 of a heart attack.
Mrs. Charles Hansen, 79 of Remsen died Wednesday in a hospital in Orange City.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Seel, Larrabee are parents of their first child, a daughter born May 16 in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital.
Steve McClintock, son of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas McClintock and Mike Meylor, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Meylor, are representing the F.I. Goodburn Post of the American Legion at the annual Boys State at Camp Dodge in Des Moines.
Lisa Dorr, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Craig Dorr, Joseph Bird, son of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Bird and Valarie Slagter, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Slagter have been named to the Dean’s List of Morningside College.
