110 Years Ago – 1914
Sympathy is a large measure goes to Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Hamand over the misfortune which has come to their four years old son who has been stricken blind. About five weeks ago a thin coating spread over one eye and they at once took him to a specialist. A few days ago the other eye became affected and he is now only able to distinguish lightness and darkness. The specialist assured them the child will be able to see in a few months.
Henry McQueen and Luther Miller are putting in a new water works at the former’s farm.
Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Knox and baby arrived last Friday from Primghar to make their home in Marcus where the people extend them a most cordial welcome. The Patton Lumber Yard will be managed by J.H. and W.H. Knox.
105 Years Ago -1919
Within the last week, the J.F. Collins Agency sold nine farms making 1181 acres in all amount to $370,926.
The Delco Lightning system has recently been installed on the A Noltze and Will Schmillen farms. All of the farm building in addition to the residence on the two farms are equipped with electric lights.
Mrs. Johnson, a theological student from Rock Island, Illinois, has accepted a call to preach at the Swedish Lutheran Church during the summer months.
Last Monday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Noltze invited about 75 neighbors and friends to their home and they had the opportunity to witness and listen to a demonstration on the Delco Lighting systems.
100 Years Ago – 1924
William Herron, a young man who had worked for James Edgar on a farm north of Marcus, died at the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars Monday afternoon.
Marcus Meylor returned Saturday from the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars where he has been receiving treatment for the past three weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. George Treinen, who will soon leave on an extended tour of eastern states, were pleasantly surprised on Sunday evening at their home north of Marcus. Returning home, they were greeted by one hundred or more friends and neighbors who deeply regret their leaving Marcus.
Funeral service for John Bjork who passed away at his home Wednesday morning May 14 following several months illness were conducted by Rev. Carl Bengston at the Carmel Lutheran Church.
95 Years Ago -1929
George Rohlfsen, who has been ill for several months, passed away Thursday, May 9. Funeral services were held in LeMars from the Lutheran Church.
Mrs. C.W. Dorr accompanied by her daughter Elizabeth and son Robert departed Tuesday evening by auto for Excelsior Springs, Missouri. They returned Saturday.
The community was called upon to mourn the death of one of its most respected citizens when William Wendt passed away Friday morning, May 16.
Sunday afternoon about 4 p.m. fire started in some manner in a wood pile at the R.O. Gordon home and spread to the grove and threatened some of the buildings. The fire department was called and soon had the fire out.
Simpson Bethel school house was badly damaged by fire. The fire was discovered by a US mailman when he was returning from Sioux City.
85 Years Ago -1939
On Friday evening, May 26 at the Marcus high school auditorium, 30 seniors of the Marcus High School will receive their diplomas.
The Coy Scouts will take over the town Saturday and all local citizens are asked to be on good behavior.
Herman Ohlendorf, 54 died May 24 after a short illness.
Eleven boys attended a meeting Friday night at the Legion Hall who are candidates for a place on the American Legion junior baseball team. Jack Knox was elected field captain.
Henry Woltman, farmer of Tilden Township, passed away at his home at the age of 54 years.
Lowel Nelson is in Omaha today April 20, buying a new stock of furniture for the Nelson & Son furniture store.
The girls and boys enjoyed an evening together last Thursday at the roller skating rink.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Cpl. Genevieve Foley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ella Foley of Marcus was recently awarded the Good Conduct Medal at this B-24 Liberator bomber training base for having faithfully performed one year of efficient and loyal service in the Women’s Army corps.
Michael McClintock, 53 and veteran of World War I, passed away May 17, 1944 at the Veterans hospital at Des Moines following an illness of several months.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Letsche received word Sunday morning that their son Pfc. Leland Letsche has been reported “missing in action” since April 28 on the Anzio Beach Head in Italy.
Fire destroyed the Palace Theatre at Alton on Sunday night causing a loss of about $12,000.
75 Years Ago -1949
Elmer Bjornstand, music instructor in the Marcus high school for several years, has been released from his contract here in order to accept a similar position in the West Des Moines high school.
Construction of two additions to the Sand Seed Service building on the northeast edge of Marcus will make the concerns home what is believed to be the longest seed building of its kind in the world.
Ronald Dorr, of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Dorr of Marcus was among 384 students of the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls to receive a degree and diploma at the annual spring commencement Monday morning May 23.
Relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Keefler gathered at their home Sunday, May 22 in honor of their fifteenth wedding anniversary.
70 Years Ago -1954
Joseph Niemann, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Nieman of Marcus was honored at the annual Iowa State College journalism awards luncheon at the college.
Dale Polson, 24 of Cleghorn, died suddenly last Friday morning at Spirit Lake where he had gone to fish in company with friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl McIntire are the parents of a son born Thursday, May 20 in the Scared Heart hospital in LeMars.
JoAnn Weimer has accepted a position with the Farmers State Bank and will take up her duties June 1.
65 Years Ago -1959
Mrs. Ella Briggs 86 of Penny Farms, Florida long time resident of the Marcus community passed away Wednesday afternoon May 20 at the Marcus Nursing Home following a brief illness.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hansen are the parents of a daughter born Friday May 15.
Joan Rieper was revealed as valedictorian of the class of 1959 of the public high school at commencement exercises last Thursday evening. Miss Rieper is he daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rieper of rural Marcus.
Agnes Busch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Busch has accept a position at the Davis Commercial Bookkeeping.
A surprise and farewell party was given in honor of Fern Letsche Saturday afternoon by the employees of the telephone company.
60 Years Ago -1964
This Sunday evening the members of the Class of 1964 will receive their diploma from Holy Name high school at commencement exercises in the parish church.
This will be the last class to be graduated from high school as only the elementary grades will be taught next year at Holy Name.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in Gasu Church in Detroit Michigan for Dr. James Rayond Delaney 55, who passed away at his home Saturday.
Frank Clark, 75 passed away at Lakeland, FL, Monday, May 18. Mr. Clark had for many years spent the winter in Florida returning each spring to spend the summer on his farm adjoining Marcus on the west.
Ben Enncking, 61 of Marcus died suddenly about 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the Glenn Rohlfsen farm about two miles west of Larrabee. Mr. Enneking had had heart trouble which presumably resulted in this death.
55 Years Ago -1969
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Miller of Paullina will be honored on their 35th wedding anniversary Sunday June 1.
R.S. Ames, 78 of Astoria, SD and former resident of Marcus, died Wednesday afternoon May 14. He was the father of Bob and Dick Ames of Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brady of Storm Lake became the parents of their first child a daughter born Tuesday, May 20.
Mr. and Mrs. Cy Delaney were honored at dinner at the Waeside in LeMars Thursday evening on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mrs Frances Stowater was complimented in observance her 70th birthday anniversary Monday afternoon May 19 at the home other daughter Mrs. Howard Juhl.
50 Years Ago -1974
Friday, May 24 the Grand Meadow School will close its doors and end an era that had its beginning in 1920.
Children and grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dorr of Marcus cordially invite friends and relatives to an open house in honor of the couples 60the wedding anniversary on Sunday, June 2.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Pallesen will observe their 25th wedding anniversary at an open house in their home on Sunday, May 26.
Julie Meylor was presented with a book given to her by Miss Diment and Mr. McIntosh in appreciation for the writing she did for the National Council Teachers English Composition Contest.
Duane Gravenish 17, year old son of Mrs. Mary Gravenish of Meriden, was accidentally shot Tuesday night about 9:00 as he and his brother Dean were tending some chores.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Mike Bird, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bird is the recipient of a four year Army ROTC scholarship.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wright of San Mateo, CA are the parents of a son born April 30.
Five Marcus students will graduate from Iowa State University at Ames this Saturday. They are Tom Brady, Gayle Ducommun, Ruth Mayer, Julie Meylor and Karen Pallesen.
Several Marcus boys will be participating in the State Track Meet this Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26.
