110 Years Ago – 1914
W.H. Knox and Paul Bird, the Marcus alumni of Iowa State College of Ames, have a panoramic view of the campus building of the college at Ames and will have it framed and placed in the Marcus High School.
The Ingersoll Pool Hall has been thoroughly cleaned and repainted and is one of the netest and best arranged pool halls in this section.
A baby girl is reported at the home of Mr. & Mrs. George Erickson, Saturday, May 16.
Mack Johnson purchased the C.W. Meyers Barbershop in Remsen and will take immediate possession. Mack is operating a barbershop in Marcus and will continue his business here.
A.B. Olson is having his residence property improved by having a cement block foundation placed this week.

Corporal Carl Zangger reached home Tuesday morning from ten months service in France and like the rest of the boys in one happy lad.
Miss Mollie Fenton returned last Saturday from Dubuque where she attended the graduation recital at St. Joseph Academy
Marcus business place were gally decorated this week in honor of the returning members of the 168th infantry.
S.M. Wixcel, who has the agency for the Dart cars has sold touring cars to F.E. Rubbert and Albert Fielder.
Margaret Quirin, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Quirin is sick with pneumonia.

The junior class of Marcus High School royalty entertained the senor class at a banquet in the basement of the Methodist church on Saturday evening, May 17.
Mrs. Forrest Collier has accepted a position as bookkeeper in the Marcus bank.
Word has been received by L.M. Miller of the birth of a seven pound boy that has come to gladden the home of Mr. & Mrs. Don Loomis of Chicago on May 16.
John Nielsen, Humphrey Means, G.A. Johnson, Earl Krinklow and James Mulvany are all proud owners of new Chevrolet cars.
The junior senior banquet of Holy Name School was held Thursday evening May 22 in th escience hall with Miss Margaret Dunn acting as toastmistress.

Fire of an unknown origin destroyed the farm home on the W.E. Willey farm a mile south of Marcus Wednesday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. Benard Kosse are the parents of a daughter born April 29.
Jacob Wesley Carney, pioneer resident passed away on Thursday morning following a brief illness.
Mrs. Gordon Garvin is suffering from a very sorry hand. X-rays were taken and a piece of a crochet hook that was broken off in her hand years ago was located.
Friends and relatives were saddened to learn of the death of Jacob Wester Carney, who passed away Thursday morning.

Jack Galigan is driving a new two door Standard Ford delivered to him Wednesday, May 24 by Peters Brothers.
Five seniors at Holy Name High School will receive their diplomas Sunday, May 28 at 10 a.m. Mass.
Cattle prices during the past few months have been comparatively strong, reports Carl Oldsen, field representative for the Iowa Beef Producers Association.
The window of Nelson’s Furniture Store is beautifully decorated this week with poppy poster made by the pupils of Holy Name School.
The Marcus Oil and Supply Co. will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its organization May 20.
The Marcus public school faculty for the ensuing year was completed with the hiring of Miss Edith Qualheim of Denison, Iowa for the English an dramatic and Miss Sena Hansen for the normal training department.
Allotments are now being determined for the 1940 wheat crop.

Mike McClintock passed away Wednesday morning shortly after 7 a.m. at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines where he has been a patient for several weeks.
Greg Kennedy, 53 and well known farmer of Marcus Township, passed away at his home Saturday evening following months of illness.
The Home Economics Class of the Marcus Public School entertained their mothers and friends at a program, style show and tea in the school auditorium.
Ed Zimmerman received word this week that his nephew, Cleon McDonald, son of Mrs. Lillie McDonald of Montrose, SD, was killed in action October 8.
75 Years Ago -1949
Last rites were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm from the Mt. Pleasant Church for Miss Myra Simons, 72 who passed away at her home on Thursday evening May 12 following an acute heart attack.
Vera Kestel, daughter of Mrs. Joe Kestel of Marcus will be among the graduates of St. Joseph’s College in Sioux City Sunday afternoon to receive her x-ray technician diploma.
Richard Rattary has been selected winner for Marcus High School in the 1949 Essay Contest sponsored by the Flax Institute of the United States.
A small twister hit the Ralph Simonsen farm occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Meyer around 6:00 Monday evening destroying an 18 ft cattle feeder and scattering over the farm. On the Andy Meehan farm it knocked over the windmill and lifted a wagon box full of feed off the wheels.
Bob Stowater has accepted a position with Nielsen’s Electric Shop. Bob recently graduated from an electrician trade school in Kansas City.
Elmer Blietz has been appointed janitor and custodian of the Municipal building.
After 32 years and 7 months in the service of the Illinois Central Railroad, Mr. C.A. Reed has been placed on retirement effective January 10, 1949.

Services for Mrs. Alice Forbes, 88 of Sioux City were held in the Nelson Funeral Home here Thursday afternoon and burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Cyril Reinert are the parents of a son born Monday, May 15 in the LeMars hospital.
Mrs. Laura Busch, 74 passed away Saturday afternoon, May 15 in the LeMars hospital. She had been ill for several months.
Jean Garlow was accepted the position of reporter and bookkeeper at the Marcus News made vacant by the resignation of Mrs. Vernon Ebert.
Dale Polson, 24, of Cleghorn died suddenly Friday morning at Spirit Lake where he had gone on a fishing trip.
Mr. & Mrs. Earl McIntire are the parents of a son.

August Sanow, 66, of Remsen, died Tuesday, May 12. Mr. Sanow farmed south of Marcus before moving to Remsen.
The Rev. C.W. Samuelson retired pastor of Carmel Lutheran Church here, and Marcus Fair since it inaugural 23 years ago has resigned that position.
Wanda Kay Rassel. 5 and half months old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Rassel of rural Larrabee died Monday May 11 in Cherokee after a short illness.
60 Years Ago -1964
Brudette Hanson, superintendent of the Marcus Community School for the past four years, Monday evening presented his resignation to the district board of directors at the groups regular meeting. Mr. Hanson will return to the University of Iowa to continue work on a doctors of Philosophy degree.
Mr. & Mrs. Bud Busch of Marcus announce the arrival of twin daughters born on Sunday, May 3.
Benjamin Radcliffe, 44 of Spirit Lake and a former resident of Marcus, met death Thursday May 7 when his truck left the highway near Harris, Iowa.
The new residents of 207 North Oak will be Pastor and Mrs. Richter and family. The plan to occupy Peace Lutheran Church’s parsonage on Monday, May 18.
Ray Hansen, Marcus farmer and trucker was struck in the jaw by a .22 caliber rifle bullet as he passed by a farm southwest of Remsen.

Miss Minnie Digel, 77 of Marcus, passed away Saturday, May 10 at Cherokee after a long illness.
The student Association of the University of SD would like to announce the election of Charles Nielsen, Jr. to the office of Student Body Vice President. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Nielsen, Sr. of Marcus.
Elmer Herzberg of Marcus won the four gallon of Cook’s paint given away by Marcus Lumber Company during its paint sale.
Clifford Ritts, a Marcus barber many years ago, died at Fort Dodge Monday morning.
Jack Shea of the Marcus Jaycees presented a Golden Winchester to Dale Sudtelgte of Remsen, and a Browning .22 rifle to Robert Gengler of Oyens at the recent Jaycee Gun, Coin and Antique Show.

The Senior Citizens honored Mr. and Mrs. Art Dorr on their 60th Anniversary at a 5:30 dinner at the Senior Citizens Leisure Lounge Wednesday, May 8.
Urban Keffler, 68, passed away Tuesday evening May 14 at the Lake City hospital following a short illness.
Mrs. Carl A Reed, 83 of Marcus died May 1 in Seattle, Washington hospital.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Seggerman will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary at an open house Sunday, May 19.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Jenks will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house on June 16 at Simpson United Methodist Church in Elkhart, Indiana.
Bill Pedersen, superintendent of the American Legion Golf Course in Shenandoah posted the second hole in one of the year Sunday morning as he aced the 136 yard No. 6 hole using a seven iron.

Joan Bryant will be competing in the Girls State Track Meet this weekend. She qualified by throwing the discus 118 feet and 10.25 inches at the district meet.
Word has been received that Trinity Lutheran Church will be featured on IS Farm Report, May 19 on Channel 9.
A baby girl was born to norm and Margaret Williams of Commerce City, Colorado on May 1.

The Marcus Boy scouts are still in process of selling a limited edition of a Marcus commermorative belt buckle which will continue through the the month of May.
Mrs. Daria Bush, 77 of Mapleton passed away at a Sioux City Hospital.
Amos Weber of LeMars will celebrate his 90th birthday May 11.
