110 Years Ago – 1914
George Kuhl had the misfortune to break his right shoulder blade while playing ball with some children one day last week. He stumbled over some telephone wires which were fastened to the ground.
Dr. S.P. Delaney, Chiropractor of Remsen, will open an office in the old First National Bank Building in Marcus Saturday.
Miss Vera Neild has resigned her position at the Delaney Store and will work for a short time at Smith’s Cafe.
Pat Brady, one of the many up to date farmers of Marcus township stated work this week on the foundation for his barn which will be 48×54 in size. The barn will be lighted with electricity. Mr. Brady will have a private electric plant with a storage battery.
A fire alarm was turned in form the Elmer Hansen place Saturday. The damage was slight, as the shed that burned was a little value.
105 Years Ago -1919
Farm buildings on the farm owned by A.M. Swanson and tenanted by Hans Jorgensen, five and one half miles north of Marcus was considerable damaged by a small twister on Saturday afternoon.
Mr. & Mrs. S. Proctor are the parents of a son born to them Monday.
Mr. & Mrs. Ben Snyder have the sympathy of their friends in the death of their five month old baby who passed away April 29.
Charles Noltze has sold 120 acres farm to Jethro Stowater for $300 a acre.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mr. & Mrs. Goodburn are the parents of a son born, Saturday, April 26.
The Marcus Booster Club met at the Smith’s Cafe Thursday evening for a monthly banquet followed by a business building.
The Park Floral committee met at the home of S.M. Wixcel Wednesday evening and made necessary plans for the setting of flowers, shrubs and trees in the park. Friday was the time set for planting bulbs and the shrubs.
The senior class of Marcus High School enjoyed their annual skip day last Wednesday.
Cyril Brady was injured while discing in the field after his team became frightened and ran away.
Joe Green purchased a True Blue Oakland touring car with glass enclosure.
95 Years Ago -1929
Mr. & Mrs. Adam Hohbach have moved from the country into the Olson property.
Word has been received by friends of the serious illness of William White of Moore, Montana who suffering from high blood pressure.
Marcus won another cup last Saturday by defeating Larrabee in the finals for the county baseball tournament. This is the third county championship that Marcus has won this year: football, basketball and now baseball.
Catherine Wood and Evelyn Dorr of Marcus will represent this district in the scholastic meet in Iowa City.
The People’s Store began its grand opening sale Thursday morning to continue for 10 days. The store had been entirely re-arranged and decorated and painted, the old stock of goods closed out and the new stock displayed for the opening.
Junior Birch sustained a gash on the head as a result of an accident Saturday.
85 Years Ago -1939
A hundred and thirty six mothers and daughters were present last Thursday night in the Methodist church parlors for a banquet in their honor.
The Marcus public school faculty for the ensuring year was completed with the hiring of Miss Edith Qualheim of Denison for the English and dramatic and Miss Sena Hansen of Minneapolis for the normal training department.
The fire department was called to the home of Henry Anderson, 10 miles southwest of Marcus. A spark from the chimney is believed to have started a roof fire.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Sixteen boys meet at the community building last Tuesday evening for their first meeting as Boy Scouts with their Scot Master Roy Nelson.
A group of twenty neighbors gathered at the Leo Bird farm place on Tuesday to lend a helping hand with the plowing which had not been done because of his illness.
A Tuesday morning funeral service was held at the Catholic church in Minnesota for Wiley O’Toole a former resident of the Marcus community.
S. Sgt. James Whealon was recently awarded his good conduct medal and his Asiatic and Pacific Campaign Ribbon.
75 Years Ago -1949
Ernie Erickson was painfully injured Monday when he fell from a ladder while getting a brooder stove out of storage. He fell about 14 feet with the brooder stove in his arms.
The Marcus fire department was called to the Charles Auchstelter farm early Wednesday morning when the barn on the farm was ignited by a bolt of lightning. The farm is about six miles southwest of Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Fischer are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday, May 3 in the Methodist hospital in DesMoines.
A new home is being built for John Ogren on the lot across the street north of the Marcus Hotel.
Elmore Wallin has moved his body and fender shop to the former Marcus Lumber Company wood shop building south of the Farmers Elevator.
70 Years Ago -1954
Mr. & Mrs. George Scott will hold an open house on Sunday, May 9 at their home in honor of their silver wedding anniversary.
Dr. G.R. Hobson, a Marcus senior member of the partnership of Hobson and Haines was elected first vice president of the Iowa chiropractor’s Association last night.
Pvt. and Mrs. Vernon Ebert are the parents of a son born Thursday morning, May 6 at the Scared Heart Hospital.
A group of friends and relatives from Marcus gathered at the Ben Ohlendorf home Thursday to honor Mrs. Adam Grauer on her 87th Birthday.
65 Years Ago -1959
Harm Seggerman Sr. 77 years of age died at his home here Tuesday morning following a short illness.
John Miller, who farms about three miles northwest of Marcus was lucky to escape with his life from a harrowing experience which occurred about 11 o’clock Thursday morning. While driving through a hay field on his farm, his car caught fire.
Charles Addy Jr. of Troop 113 of Marcus was one of twenty boys scouts to receive an Ad Alter Dei medal. The medal is the highest award in Catholic scouting.
The work of tearing down the present service station of the Community Cooperative has been started.
60 Years Ago -1964
Eugene Kieffer, 75, editor and publisher of the Remsen Bell Enterprise for 45 years died unexpectedly at his home there Friday.
Earl Davis, 51 of Marcus, lost his life Monday night when his car struck a bridge abutment of Highway 18 about five miles east of Sheldon.
Mrs. James Peterson of Remsen won the winner of the Morgan Jones bedspread given away Saturday evening at Nagles Apparel.
Mr. & Mrs. John Stamer, Jr of Marcus are the proud parents of a daughter.
55 Years Ago -1969
Joan Brady of Remsen was among the 41 freshman students who received their nursing caps at St. Joe’s Mercy School of Nursing.
Funeral services for Leslie Davis, 74 of Marcus.
Dean Barnes are agronomist in Crop production for ten Northwest Iowa counties, was given the ISU Alumni Key Award by the Clay County Alumni at their annual banquet.
Mr. & Mrs. Max Drefke are the parents of a duaghter born at FVH in LeMars Wednesday, April 23.
Gayle Ames, Steve Johnson, Dan Schlenger, Lynn Seel, Julie Bohnekamp, Debbie Davis, Ann Dorr, Bob Dorr, Jeanette Earnest, John Mayer and Patricia Nielsen were inducted into the National Honor Society.
50 Years Ago -1974
Mr. & Mrs. Sam Gibson of Fort Worth, Texas are the parents of a daughter born April 24.
Pvt. Robert Goodburn has finished his eight week basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and is new in Advance Individual Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Joan Bryant of Marcus was crowned Cherokee County Beef Queen at a banquet and style show held Friday, April 27. Yvoone Grauer was selected as the Beef Princess.
Marcus Variety formerly Brel Variety Store will have their grand opening this Friday and Saturday, May 4 & 5 according to new store owners, Mr. & Mrs. Carlyle Peterson.
Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Schwarz of Marcus will be celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday, May 6 with an open house.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Herman Klingsensmith 95 of rural Washta, after a brief illness.
Floyd Bentz passed away at the age of 55 at Floyd Valley Hospital.
40 Years Ago –1984
An open house honoring Leo Brady will be held Saturday morning at the Western Cherokee Mutual Insurance Office. Mr. Brady has served the Mutual for many years as an agent, director and full time adjuster.
Norbert Lamberty, 60 years old passed away in Duluth, Minnesota.
Marilyn Nervig of Ames and Mr. and Mrs. Stan Nervig were Easter Sunday guests of Mr. & Mrs. Mike Knutson. They also celebrated Alison’s birthday.
