115 Years Ago -1909
Bonita Walsh, while roller skating last Sunday, fell and broke her right arm.
The home of Fred Harvey last Friday evening was the scene of a pleasant surprise lawn party. This occasion was planned and executed by Mises Ethel and Irene Harvey in honor of their brother Walter’s twentieth birthday.
As a result of an automobile accident near Remsen last Friday night, Josephine, the 16 year old daughter of F.J. Klostermann died Tuesday morning.
L.H. Talcott last Friday sold his residence property to Henty Wilson who will get possession the first of June. Mr. & Mrs. Talcott plan to move to Marcus and expect to go west until after the winter.
Fritz Bergman and Emil Vikanden recently arrived from Sweden where they spent the last winter with home folks. They were accompanied by the latters brother, Ralph, who will also make this country his future home.
110 Years Ago – 1914
A senior class of Marcus enjoyed their annual skip day last Wednesday. A very enjoyable time was reported.
Marcus, Amherst and Liberty Farm Bureau ladies met at a joint session at the Albert Prunty home Monday. Miss Manilla Baker, instructor from Ames, conducted the meeting in sewing.
105 Years Ago -1919
Born to Mr. & Mrs. George Alberty a son, Tuesday, May 13.
Earl Gill, who has been clerking in the Mick and Kass Store for several years has resigned to accept the appointment of rural mail carrier. Mr. Gill will succeed Orville Schumaker who has acted as substitute for several months.
The Misses Gund have purchased an electric coupe, which is the first electric car owned by Marcus people.
Fred Wilkens has erected one of the best corn cribs and granaries on his farm that can be found any where around. Despite high prices of materials the farmers of Marcus vicinity are making improvement this year.
Henry Diegel is putting a hog house 26 x 28 foot and combined crib and oats granary 26 x 32 foot with 12 foot posts.
J.J. Garvin who has held the position of superintendent of the Municipal Water Plant for more than a year, handed in his resignation to the City Council yesterday.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Claus Schroeder’s little girl is seriously ill with double pneumonia. A trained nurse is in attendance.
Miss Esther Miller, thirteen year old daughter of Peter Miller, who lives north of Marcus, had the distinction of being the best eighth grade speller in the rural schools of Cherokee County.
Mrs. Lora Parmely known to Marcus friends as Miss Lora Proctor, who met a tragic death in an auto accident in Kansas.
95 Years Ago -1929
The grade pupils of Holy Name school presented a pleasing program to a large audience in Holy Name hall Tuesday night.
Friends and family were saddened to learn of the death of Jacob Wester Carney who passed away Thursday morning.
Clifford Dorr had the bone in his right wrist cracked Sunday while playing ball. He was hit with a pitched ball and has suffered greatly from the mishap.
The heavy frost that visited this section last night is thought to have destroyed some of the fruit such as apples, cherries and strawberries.
Mr. & Mrs. Adam Hohbach have moved from the country into the Olson property.
Marcus won another cup last Saturday by defeating Larrabee in the finals for the county baseball tournament. This is the third county championship that Marcus has won this year, football, basketball and now baseball.
85 Years Ago -1939
Allotments are now being determined for the 1940 wheat crop, according to Ray R Marsh, chairman of the Cherokee County Conservation Association.
The Marcus Oil and Supply Company will celebrate the twentieth anniversary of its organization May 20.
The people of the Marcus community invested more than $1,000/week in Savings bonds during 1938.
Fred Dorr begun construction on a new home on the est side of Locust Street in the first block south on Amherst Street.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Tuesday afternoon the Legion Auxiliary entertained the mothers and wives of all service ment and women at a party in the Legion Hall. 160 registered at the desk with Mrs. Ray Walsh and Mrs. R.P. Muehl.
George Dorr, son of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Dorr, received the rating of Sgt. May 1 at March Field, California.
This week of May 8, 1944 marks the beginning of the 5th year of business for the third generation of the Delaney Store.
John Ohlendorf, who has been living in Remsen, has moved to Marcus and plans to make his home here.
75 Years Ago -1949
Mr. & Mrs. S.M. Wixcel residents of Marcus until eight years ago when they moved to Waterloo, where honored on their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Mary Tracey, 73, passed away Wednesday morning at the Silent Night Nursing Home in Cherokee.
Between 60 and 70 head of spring pigs were destroyed by fire along with a hog house on the Ronald Ludwig farm northwest of Marcus Tuesday of last week.
Word has been received that the body of Lt. James Garvin arrived in New York Saturday abroad the army transport Haiti Victory. The body is being shipped to Marcus and services will be held at Holy Name Church upon arrival of Lt. Garvin. He was reportd missing November 29, 1943 during a mission in a P-38 Lightning Fighter group which was furnishing escort protection to heavy bombers.
Fred Mossman was called to Onawa on business this week and expects to be gone about two weeks.
Bids for the position of custodian of the public school building were opened at Monday evening’s meeting of the board and that of the incumbent, Art Nielsen, accepted.

On May 9 Mr. & Mrs. George Scott were honored on their silver wedding anniversary at an open house in their home.
The children and their families of Mr. & Mrs. John Schreier gathered in the Schreier home on Friday, May 7 to honor them on their 42nd wedding anniversary.
Ken Fry today announced the sale of Fry Jewelry, effective this summer, to DeWayne Schott of Marcus.

Adam Pfeifer 92, passed away Tuesday morning May 5 after a lingering illness.
Marcus high school musicians received two division II ratings at the state large group contest held at Remsen, May 2.
The work of tearing down the present service station of the Coop Oil Company has been started by the Herman Fischer crew they are proved quite adept to that line of work.
The daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. Richard Pallesen May 3.
60 Years Ago -1964
Funeral services were held Thursday, morning for Earl Davis, 51 who met death Monday evening when his car struck a bridge abutment on Highway 18 about five miles east of Sheldon.
Jean Bork of Marcus and Norma Toel of LeMars are two rural youth who will receive two year $160 scholarships to assist them in their educational plans in becoming teachers.
Mrs. Ednam Swanson 78 of Cleghorn died in Cherokee last Friday.
Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Dorr will observer their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, May 10 with an open house.

The Marcus Fire Department was called south of town early Sunday morning to a fire in Lawrence Rassel’s Ford convertible.
Chuck Ogren and Bonnie Sadler reined as king and queen for the junior-senior prom.
Mrs. Kenny Ludwig underwent major surgery Monday at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee for a non-functional gallbladder.
50 Years Ago -1974
Gary Fischer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Herman Fischer of Bloomdale who carries a healthy 29 handicap had the honor of making the first hole in one at the Randall Oaks Golf Course for the 1974 season.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Jones of LeMars are the parents of a son born Thursday, May 2.
The Marcus Community High School Band, chorus and girls glee will present its spring concert Tuesday, May 14.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Wiebersch are the parents of a baby boy born April 27.

Mr. & Mrs. Ron Dorr of Lansing, Michigan are the parents of a baby girl born May 1.
A new scoreboard for the little league has been constructed by Fran Galles, new manager of the League and will replace the old scoreboard at the City ball park.
Dan Miller has relocated Miller Repair Shop to the buildings formerly occupied by Sigler’s Corner of Highway 3, one mile west of Cleghorn.
Mr. & Mrs. Mark Hanraham of Cedar Rapids announce the birth of their first child, a son on May 1.
The 880 yeard relay team of Mike Knudson, Stu Heilman, Tim ERdman and Rick Simons came in first at 1:35:99 at the Dutchman Relays in Orange City Monday.
40 Years Ago –1984
A community Auction, sponsored by the Marcus Lions Club, will be held at the Marcus Community Center. The many items donated by businessmen in the surrounding area will be auctioned off towards the purchase of a new air conditioner for the community center.
Marchael Clifford Schlenger, 72, Marcus passed away at a Cherokee nursing home following a short illness.
The 1984 Charles Rosburg outstanding athlete scholar is Kevin Lehan, the winner of the Ruth Witter outstanding athlete award for 1984is Sue Beaton and the Marvin Hanson award is won by Tom Bies, chosen by the Board as the most promising sophmore athlete.
Tom Cochrane of Marcus will celebrate his 80th birthday Thursday, May 10.
Joe Hueser, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jack Hueser and Kim Moats, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Dwight Moats were crowned King and Queen of the 1984 Marcus
High School Prom.
Mr. & Mrs. Ivan Theisen of Route 1 Marcus received a bench grinder they won during the recent Ag Days program, sponsored by the Sioux City Association of Buiness and Industry.
