110 Years Ago – 1914
George Bass, brother of Charles Bass, passed away on Thursday, April 5.
George and Elmer Goodburn left on Monday night for Zion, IL called there by the serious illness of their father, who has been in poor health for some time.
Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Knox and baby arrived last Friday from Primghar to make their home in Marcus where the people extend them a most cordial welcome. The Patton Lumber Yard will be manged by J.H. and W.H. Knox.
A large number of business places have installed fire extinguishers in their places of business.
H. Treinen and F. Cline returned Friday evening form Omaha and brought a new Studebaker home with them.
At least 1,000 people enjoyed the excellent music by the Marcus Band Saturday night. It was a splendid scene, one which was never enacted in Marcus before. Of course, there have been larger crowds before but this reference is made to the brilliancy of the streets and the band stand as it was lighted with electricity.
105 Years Ago -1919
Bert Krekow, owner of the Old Two Good Livery Barn, sold the building and site to the Sammies Oil Company. The Sammies Oil Company sold the building to Gus Hadel. Mr. Hadel guarantees to wreck the building within a reasonable length of time.
George Hopper, for the past twenty seven years and resident of the Marcus vicinity, passed away Tuesday, April 29 at his home in Marcus due to a heart disease.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Anderson are the parents of a son born to them on Monday, April 28.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Leo Frank, who has been a patient at the LeMars hospital for the past three weeks, returned home Sunday.
The Ralph Porter accompanied her son, Ray, to LeMars on Tuesday where he is a patient in the Sacred Heart Hospital.
Joe Green has purchased a True Blue Oakland touring car with glass enclosure.
Cyril Brady was seriously injured in the field when a disc passed over his body. He was unconscious when found and removed from his home.
95 Years Ago -1929
Simpson Bethel school house was badly damaged by fire. The fire was discovered by a US Mailman when he was returning form Sioux City.
Rev. Father George Cooke departed Sunday for Milwaukee where he will be gone for several days.
William Dickson was called to Sioux City Wednesday by the serious illness of his brother Clarence.
The People’s store began its grand opening sale Thursday morning to continue for 10 days. The store had been entirely re-arranged, decorated and painted the old stock of goods closed out and the new stock displayed for the opening.
85 Years Ago -1939
Henry Woltman, farmer of Tilden Township, passed away at this hom eat the age of 54 years.
Lowell Nelson is in Omaha today, April 20, buying a new stock of furniture for the Nelson & Son furniture store.
The girl and boys scouts enjoyed an evening together last Thursday at the roller skating rink.
At a meeting here Monday evening, preliminary steps were taken toward the organization of a Rotary Club in Marcus.
To a capacity house and musical talent of a Marcus public school presented a very pleasing concert in the gym
80 Years Ago – 1944
The waste paper drive was off to a glorious start Friday when the high school students and truck drivers canvassed the community and brought in a load of 17,380 pounds of paper, netting $151.52
In the preliminary state contest held in Storm Lake, the music students from Marcus placed two first, six seconds and two thirds.
Rev. and Mrs., Everett Dorr of Varina are the parents of a son.
The American Legion Auxiliary will entertain the mothers of men and women in service, also the wives of servicemen.
75 Years Ago -1949
Funeral services were held at Holy Name Church on Thursday, April 28 for Mrs. Anna Sand, 83 and former resident of Marcus, who passed away at her home in Los Angeles.
William Pitts, 44, was critically injured late Monday morning when a team of horses became intractable and dragged and kicked him.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Coyour of Sioux City have purchased the coffee shop in Marcus and are now in possession. Mr. & Mrs. Emil Engelbrecht, the sellers , have no definite plans for the future.
70 Years Ago -1954
Charles Addy, manager of the Marcus Oil & Supply Company is back in the turkey raising business. Charles has 2,500 Broad Breast Bronze turkeys which he bought from the Dorr Hatchery.
Mark Bancroft, local attorney has been elected president of the Marcus Rotary Club for the year.
Mr. & Mrs. Ralph McConnell returned Friday afternoon from a four month trip to Oregon and California where they enjoyed a pleasant visit with relatives and friends.
65 Years Ago -1959
Charles Addy Jr., of Troop 113 of Marcus was one of twenty boy scouts to receive an Altare Dei medal.
One of the plate glass windows of Clarkson’s IGA Supermarket was broken last Saturday afternoon when the brakes on a car driven by Mrs. Art Long failed to function.
Harm Sefferman, Sr. 77 years of age, passed away at his home here Tuesday morning following a short illness.
Butch Ames announces in an advertisement this week the opening of the Kid’s Korner drive-in here.

Mary Spieler, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Martin Spieler graduated recently and received a diploma from the Junior Secretarial course at NBT College in Sioux City.
Miss Alma Anderson, former long time resident of Marcus, has been a patient at the SVMH in Cherokee recuperating from a broken hip suffered in a fall at her home.
Warren Weber left Monday for Iowa City where he will undergo ear surgery at the hospital there.
Neither Elmer Harzberg nor Mrs. Alfred Schmillen answered the call last Saturday night and they missed winning prizes of $50 each in Marcus money.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Nagle were in Omaha Sunday and Monday attending the Fall Market for Men and Boys at the Paxton hotel.

Mrs. John Bentz, 67, a Marcus resident since 1947, passed away suddenly Saturday afternoon at her home here
Mrs. Lawrence Rupp returned home Sunday from Kansas City where she accompanied her daughter Mrs. Keith Brachter on a ten day Golden Age Garden Tour.
Ray Hanson was honored at a surprise party Monday evening in observance of his birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. Norbert Boever entertained at a picnic Sunday at their home in Sioux City honroing Tim Boever who will soon be leaving for Vietnam.

Gregory Grauer, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Grauer, has been accepted as a first year student in the college of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University at Ames.
The Street widening project which began lat fall in now in full swing. In addition to new sidewalks IPS is installing a new lighting system.
Marsha Delaney, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Edward A Delaney and Dave Means, son of Mr. & Mrs. Harold Means, were crowned queen and king of the Marcus prom.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Sandra and Julie Goth, Yvoone Grauer, Joan Bryant, Jane Sokolowski and Tina Leonard are competing for the title of Cherokee County Beef Queen, sponsored by the County Cowbelles and Cattlemen;s Association.
A surprise birthday party was held in honor of Mrs. Henerietta Tentinger on April 12th.
Wade Berger of Marcus was elected 2nd State Vice President of the Iowa State Society, Children of the American Revolution, at the 32nd Annual State Conference of CAR at Des Moines.
The mile relay team of Mike Knudson, Chuck, Hansen, Stu Hielman and Tim Erdman placed second at Aurelia’s track meet.
40 Years Ago –1984
Work commenced this week on a new building project at the Marcus Oil and Supply Company station. The new section will house an automatic car wash.
Rev. Brian McNamara has been appointed as pastor of the Marcus United Methodist Church.
Stephanie Simons of Marcus has recently became a Junior Member of the American Simmental Association.
Mrs Cindy Stevenson of Marcus was named Chairperson of the 1984 Mental Health Bellringer Fund Drive.
