The telephone office will discontinue giving the me of day and the train information owing to the extra heavy traffic and to expatiate more rapid operating.
M.R. Nagle, an old settler of Marcus, died at the Nagle home in this city at seven o’clock Tuesday evening following a long illness with stomach trouble.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mrs. Josephine Hamilton entertained twelve girls Saturday afternoon in honor her daughter’s birthday.
A baby girl was born to Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Hamilton.
Henry Baker was a victim of a surprise birthday party on Friday night when his wife invited 25 neighbors and friends to help him celebrate his birthday.
Leo Franck, who has been a patient at the LeMars hospital for the past three weeks, returned home Sunday evening.
95 Years Ago -1929
Simpson Bethel school house was badly damaged by fire Friday morning about 5:30.The fire was discovered by a US mailman wen he was returning from Sioux City.
Those of Amherst who attended a birthday party for Mrs. Heller were Mrs. Charles Swindle, Mrs. Glen Gibson, Mrs. William Gibson, Mrs. John Holmes, Mrs. Robert Porter, Mrs, Ralph porter and Mrs. Lester Briggs.
William Dickson was called to Sioux City Wednesday by a serious illness of his brother Clarence who is suffering form Neuritis.
85 Years Ago -1939
Wallace Kruse has accepted a position as manager of the meat department with the Council Oak store.
The married folks dance will be held Tuesday a the Japanese Gardens here for the benefit of the Colt Show.
John Zembsch has been appointed deputy county treasurer and has gone to Cherokee to work with his townsman, Floyd Knox, in the treasurers office.
Roland George Poppin, the youngest son of Mr. & Mrs. John Poppin, passed away Monday morning after an illness of four days.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Norma Alesch spent the weekend in the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Alesch.
Mr. & Mrs. Carl Anderson received word that their son, Tommy, has arrived in England.
Lois Peters passed her mental and physical tests at Iowa City which classifies her as on of the hundred candidates to enter training in the Cade Nurses Corp.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Donner received word that their son, Cpl. Vernon Donner, was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
The waste paper drive started last week brought in a load of 17,380 pounds of paper, netting $151.32 from the sale.
Due to increased cost, effective May 15, The Marcus News rates will be as follows: local and state $2.00 per year in advance and out of state of Iowa in US $2.50 per year.
75 Years Ago -1949
The Marcus people attending the 24th annual Des Moines Register and Tribute spelling bee held in Des Moines were Mr. & Mrs. George Wilson and sons Robert and Jack, Duane Bork and Miss Virginia Robinson.
Mr. & Mrs. AL Pitts received word from California of the death of Laura Hinkley, a former resident of Amherst Township.
The crew of men working on the new Evans implement company lot mad a surprising and pleasing discovery recently when they uncovered what was expected to be the remnants of a long buried sidewalk as perfect as the day it was put in.
The Cleghorn consolidated school district voted Tuesday to issues bonds in the amount of $100,000 for the purpose of building an addition to the school building. Out of the 250 votes cast, 197, favored the proposition and 56 opposed.

The businessmen of Marcus are sponsoring a series of free moving pictures at the Marland Theatre for the summer months.
The Masonic Temple began its construction this week.
The junior-senior banquet and prom of the Marcus High School was held April 23 with the Mardi Gras motif carried through the evening.
Holy Name was awarded several honors at St. Mary’s Remsen at the DYO Day.
Mr. & Mrs. Bill McDaniels are the parents of a daughter.
Mr. & Mrs. Carroll Weber are the parents of a son born Sunday, April 18 in the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
65 Years Ago -1959
Duane Faul, formerly of Marcus, recently won a Shell Merit Fellowhip to Stanford University this summer.
Mrs. Sarah Kline, a resident of Marcus since 1897, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Announced this week was the sale of the large tract of land in south Marcus belonging to Ed Polson. Carl Klingborg, operator of the Klingborg Building Supplies, being the new owner.
The Marcus school board has purchased a sprinkler system for the football field and baseball field and baseball diamond, which will be used this summer.
Twenty acres of virgin prairie was plowed up this spring on the Norman Smith farm. This piece of prairie grass still contained two ruts form the old trail from Holstein to LeMars, over which pioneer traveled across country without regard to property lines.
The Marcus Fire Department was called to Maynard Johnson farm last Thursday when a tractor caught fire.
James Brady Sr., 68, a widely known farmer, died suddenly evening while watching a television program at his home southeast of town.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Jenks were honored at a farewell party Friday evening in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Eldon Hansen.
60 Years Ago -1964
Nancy Boyd, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Boyd, was installed as historian for SNEA at Missouri State College.
Amos Weber returned home Saturday form Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars where he had been a patient for a week with pneumonia.
Chels Metcalf, a Marcus barber for many years passed away following a several month illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Briggs announce the arrival of a daughter born Monday, April 6.
Dedication services for the new Meriden Evangelical Free Church will be held Sunday, April 19.
55 Years Ago -1969
Captain Michael Treinen, who was just returned form a year of duty in Vietnam, talked briefly at the meeting of the Marcus Rotary Club.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Hoover have purchased the Gus Hadel home and moved in last week.
Elmer Douvia, 61, passed away suddenly Monday evening at his farm north of Marcus.
Ten Marcus High boys went on to Akron Thursday to help out with sandbagging operations.
50 Years Ago -1974
The men of the Marcus Fire Department hosted the Annual Wives Dinner at the Iron Horse in Sheldon. A presentation of Bulova Watches to John Clarkson, 36 years on the department; Howard Peavey, 35 years; Ray Gates, 30 years and Wendell Grauer, 29 years.
A group of men helped out at the Bill Berger farm 9 miles south of Marcus to plow 240 acres of land.
Mrs. Charles Knudson will receive the St. Anne Award in St. Micheal’s Church Leeds, Sioux City, Iowa.
ZVicki Dunn returned to Wartburg College at Waverly after spending a ten day Easter and semester break in the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Dunn.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Andrew Ballard, 72, of Marcus passed away at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee of a brief illness.
Jeff Pedersen and Mark Johnson have returned from the National Wrist Wrestling Championship Tournament held at Great Bend, Kansas,
Stephanie Seggerman tied for 1st place at a Math Bee. Other contestants were Susan Ballard and Lisa Spieler. Stephanie will be representing Marcus at Fort Dodge.
Peggy Carney, Marcus, is one of Buena Vista College art students who will exhibit her works at an art show and sale.
Thomas Hodge, 87, of Pierson passed away Thursday in a Sioux City hospital.
40 Years Ago –1984
The 1984 Little Miss Marcus is Julie Peters. Julie received a crown and banner from the Marcus Fair Board and a necklace from Hogue Jewelry.
Sand Seed Serive, a name synonymous with the Soybean, was partly destroyed by fire last Friday in that the office, seed processing unit, a small portion of the warehouse and the bagging facility are inoperable.
Robert Swanger, 64, of rural Cleghorn passed away very suddenly at his home after a two year illness.
