Motion by Skou, seconded by Mummert to approve the agenda. Motion carried.
Motion by Ellis, seconded by Petersen to approve the minutes of the previous meetings. Motion carried.
Mongan called for comments from the public. Julie and Trapper Rudisill asked what can be done to remedy the ongoing nuisance at 1587 510th Street, Cherokee. The county paid to have the lot cleaned up but now numerous vehicles, tires and debris continue to pile up on the lot. Adjoining property owners are very concerned with all the animals that are living in the debris and would appreciate some assistance with resolving this ongoing issue. Sarah Tracy, Zoning Administrator, suggested that a future agenda item should be scheduled so the topic can be discussed with all parties involved including the County Attorney, Treasurer, Sheriff, Zoning and Board of Supervisors.
Ronald Honsbruch, American Legion, discussed a monument currently located at the Highway 3 Bypass bridge that was dedicated by the American Legion on Veterans Day, November 1962. The Iowa DOT contacted the local Legion Post to develop a plan to either relocate the monument or temporarily remove it during construction of a new bridge in 2026. Honsbruch also reported that a $1,000 funding deficit is an ongoing issue for the Martin Treptow Post #230 due to loss of older veterans and very limited participation of younger veterans. Honsbruch requested financial assistance from the Cherokee County’s Rural Betterment Fund to assist with room rent at their current location in the Historic Depot. The request was tabled for further consideration.
Motion by Ellis, seconded by Skou to approve the 2024/2025 Proposed Budget for publication and set a Public Budget Hearing on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. Motion carried. The Proposed 2024/2025 Budget includes tax rates per $1,000 taxable valuation of $4.72576 for urban areas and $7.65455 for rural areas.
