110 Years Ago – 1914
About fifty members of the Rebekahs enjoyed an anniversary celebration in the lodge room last Thursday night.
While Mr. & Mrs. Fred Johnson and daughter, Gladys, were driving along the Otis Briggs place Saturday on their way to Marcus, the team they were driving ran away throwing the three occupants out and demolishing the carriage.
Earl Cox returned last night from South Dakota, where he has been teaching.
105 Years Ago -1919
William Dickson, M.J. Kelly, Vince McClintock, Charles Meehan, William Ryan, Raymond Meylor and Earl Snyder were among the class of 65 initiated into the Knights of Columbus in Cherokee last night.
The following boys were confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church be Rev. Ilten last Sunday, Albert and Harold Hohbach, Ervin, Carl and Paul Letsche, Elmer Olson, Herman Nitzschke, Otto Kielhorn and Martin Rubert.
Chelsea Metcalf and A.L. Shedd shipped a car of hogs to Sioux City Monday receiving the top price of twenty dollars and forty cent per hundred.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Mrs. Joseph Hamilton entertained twelve little girls friends Saturday afternoon in honor of her little daughter, Eileen Josephine’s tenth birthday.
Mrs. Charles Auchstetter went to LeMars on Tuesday morning to spend the day with her husband who is a patient at the Sacred Heart Hospital. Mr. Auchstetter recently had an operation on his ear which was very painful.
The west division of the Amherst township Farm Bureau ladies met at the Emil Digel home on Thursday.
Forrest Collier has accepted a position as bookkeeper with the Morrell Packing Company at Sioux Falls.
A very pleasant event occurred on Tuesday evening, April 15 at Carmel Lutheran Church when members of the congregation held a reception in honor of Rev. Carl Bengston.
95 Years Ago -1929
Robert Sklas of Sioux City for fourteen years sales manager and efficiency man of the K & K System of chain stores, this week purchased the general merchandise store in Marcus over twenty years operated by Mich and Kass.
At the annual election of county bankers held in Cherokee, Tuesday, Lee Woods of the Farmers State Bank was elected president of the Cherokee County Bankers Association.
The Marcus batmen downed Calumet on the home field by a score of 19-5. Slim Drefke led the hitting with a couple of singles, two triples and four bagger.
Arthur Slagter, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Slagter, out spelled the other contestants fof the county spelling bee held in Cherokee Saturday and won for Marcus the county championship.
85 Years Ago -1939
The annual high school music festival will be held in the high school auditorium Friday night April 14 at 8:00 p.m.
John Zembsch has been appointed deputy county treasurer and has gone to Cherokee to work with his fellow townsman Floyd Knox in the treasurer’s office.
Lowell Nelson is in Omaha today, April 20 buying a new stock of furniture for the Nelson and Son Furniture Store.
Nine car loads of fat cattle were shipped to Chicago Saturday, Sunday and Monday from Cleghorn.
A.M. Johnson, 89, pioneer resident of Marcus, was laid to rest Saturday.
Alf Ohman of Sioux City will move his family to Marcus and open the store formerly operated by Louis Collins.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Mr. & Mrs. Francis Bierman of Pierson are the proud parents of a girl born April 4 at the Sacred Heart Hospital.
A housewarming was held for Mr. & Mrs. Charles Nielsen at their home on Monday evening April 3.
Straub’s Store advertised Robin Hood flour 50 lbs. For $2.34 with a free 9.5 inch oven glass pie plate.
Lr. Francis Brady who is home on leave after completing 25 missions of flight over enemy territory, gave an interesting account of his flying at the Rotary dinner Tuesday noon.
75 Years Ago -1949
A carload of steal containing material for two grain storage tank was unloaded her Wednesday. The tanks are for the Farmers Elevator and will be erected just west of the present installation.
The congregation of Carmel Lutheran Church purchased a new organ and it will be dedicated Sunday evening.
70 Years Ago -1954
Howard Fitzgerald, superintendent of schools at Elkhorn, Iowa for 12 years, has been elected to serve as superintendent of the Marcus schools for the coming year. He will succeed Superintendent Carl Gaumer, school head here for the past two years, who resigned his position.
Mr. & Mrs. Loren Lukens became the parents of twin boys on Saturday, April 10.
Clarkson’s Clover Farm Store advertised Duncan Hines cake mixes 3 for $1.00; Fireside marshmallows 14 oz. Package 25 cents and jello 6 for 47 cents.
Mr. & Mrs. Barnes returned to Marcus last Wednesday after spending the winter months in California.
Mrs. Louie Miller received news of the arrival of two new grandsons. A son was born to Mr. & Mrs. Dale Brown and a son born to Mr. & Mrs. Paul Brown.

The first step in the installation of a dial exchange here was started by the West Iowa Telephone Company this week, the construction of a building to house the exchange.
Shirley Dorr of Marcus has recently accepted a position as research assistant with Science Research Associates in Chicago with their reading program.
Jack Hueser, young Marcus farmer, lost the little finger on his left hand Saturday in an accident which happened when he and some other men were working on a well on the farm of his father, Herb Hueser.
Duane Faul, formerly of Marcus and now teaching in Jefferson High School of Portland,OR has been awarded a Shill Merit Fellowhip to Stanford University.
60 Years Ago -1964
Mrs. Esther Smith, 74, a former Marcus resident passed away Friday, April 3 following an illness of two months.
A bay window in the vacant Horsie house in east Marcus was broken over the weekend, screens removed, attic window broken, and things torn up generally. Mrs. Agnes Baumann who discovered the damage believes that it was done by dogs witch should have been kept tied up.
Mrs. C.A. Denhardt 86, passed away Monday. April 6 at her home of her granddaughter Mrs. Kent Jemerson, following an illness of several months.
Merle Baumgardner reports that he won a portable television set for his sales efforts of the last few weeks, making more than $4,000 worth of prizes he won in the past few years.
Mr. & Mrs. David Drefke of Sioux City are parents of a daughter born February 25.

Ralph Gibson, high school principal at Marcus for the past nine years has submitted his resignation to the local board of education effective at the end of June.
Mr. & Mrs. Deloit Zimmerman of Spencer are the parents of a daughter born Thursday, April 3.
Gene Schaeffer, Junior High science teacher at Marcus Public School has been awarded a National Science Foundation Institute at Texas A & M University.
50 Years Ago -1974
During the month of March, fifth and sixth grade students of the Marcus Community School participated in a poster contest, sponsored by the Marcus Garden Club, using as a theme some phase of the energy problem. Winners of prizes were as follows: Marilyn Nervig, first; Jody Moser, first; Rhonda Goth, second; Cindy Brownmiller, third; and Laura Busch, third.
Mr. & Mrs. Dan Brownmiller are parents of a bay born Sunday, March 31.
Kay Bass, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Bass has been pledged to become a member of Psi Chi National Honor Society in psychology both at the local and national level at Westmar College.
Mr. & Mrs. Emmet Ryan will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary at an open house to be held April 21.

Marc Bies of Marcus has received word from Iowa Federate Women’s Club scholarship chairman, Mrs. R.D. Loften, that he is the recipient of a 1,000 merit college scholarship.
Jim’s Farm Service was recently honored for their feed sales achievement at Golden Sun’s “Salute to Success” recognition banquet.
Andrew Ballard, 72 of Marcus died Thursday, April 5 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee of a brief illness.
