Season ends for MMCRU Boys with Loss in District Final

The MMCRU boys basketball team saw its season come to an close with a 57-44 loss to South O’Brien in a Class 1A District 1 Final played February 20 at Cherokee. The teams had split their first two match-ups this season with each winning on the home court. The Royals finish with a record of 14-9.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 7-0 lead and the score was 14-7 at the end of the quarter. South O’Brien led 21-10 midway through the second period but the Royals trimmed the margin to five at 23-18 with just over a minute left. The Wolverines then scored the next five points, including a buzzer-beating three to take a 10-point lead into halftime. The closest the MMCRU would get in the second half was seven points at 39-32 with just over three minutes remaining in the third period.
The Royals were led in scoring by Brayson Mulder with 11 points and Jace Colling with 10. Jonah Petersen added six points, Wyatt Alesch five, Xander Tentinger and Lucas Braun three apiece and Mitchell Schnepf, Kamden Bork and Eli Schlenger two each. Colling notched four assists and Kyler Bork three.
Shooting accuracy was similar for the two teams. MMCRU made 17 of its 44 shots to finish at 39 percent. The Wolverines were 20-of-55 from the floor for 36 percent. From three-point range the Royals were 5-of-15 and South O’Brien 7-of-25. The Wolverines attempted 17 free throws and made 10. MMCRU was 5-of-9 from the line.
Mulder pulled down nine rebounds, made two steals and blocked two shots. Colling grabbed another six rebounds. The Royals committed 15 turnovers compared to seven for South O’Brien.
