MMCRU Helps Clean Up
the Community
By Blaine Wicks
Last week the students and teachers of MMCRU High School helped clean up Marcus, Remsen, and Cleghorn. They were split up into groups to sort cans, paint at the fairgrounds, landscape at the school, clean ditches. and more. This project is to give back to the community that helps MMCRU so much over the school year. This was the school’s chance to make a difference for the community.
Ms. Spieler said, “The service day was a great experience for me and the students in my group. We got a lot accomplished and had fun doing it. The students worked really hard and I think felt really good about doing something for the community, as the community does so much for us. It felt good to give back.”
Mr. Oswald said, “I thought it was a great thing for our students to do something for our communities who do so much for us as a school. All too often we as people do things with the expectation we deserve something in return. It’s a great reminder of what being a community is supposed to be about, by doing for each other simply to help one another out and not to be shallow and get something back.
Freshman Diamond VanDerSchaaf said, “Service day was a very busy and important day. I personally feel that everyone did well for our communities who have always supported us and our school. Most people seem to fail to recognize all they provide for our education. The communities deserved a little care, and with service day, not all of the work was pushed onto only a few people. This most definitely lowered the stress on them and benefited the students because we got to miss some classes whilst learning of real work.”
Jordyn Holsinger said, “I did cleaning up of ditches one mile towards Remsen and did landscaping at the Grace Methodist Church in Marcus. Walking the mile towards Remsen was very tiring, it was also tiring carrying the huge garbage bag, and we wore bright yellow vests so we could be seen. Landscaping at the Grace Methodist Church was a blast because we were removing rocks around the plants so they could plant new ones and I got my hands dirty in the process.”
