110 Years Ago – 1913
The directors of Meriden bank have decided to build a new bank on the site of the old one. Work will begin immediately and they expect to occupy the new building by January 1, 1919.
Peters Bros. have sold a new sedan to the Costello brothers, a coupe to Ernest Rae and touring cars to Reverend J. Soe and Gordon Garvin.
Cletus Frank, 10 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Frank, of Remsen died after a brief illness of infantile paralysis.
100 Years Ago – 1923
C. R. Rosburg, 54, proprietor of the variety store, died Friday after two years of ill health. He is survived by his wife and children, Rex, Ruth, Helen and Marie.
James McClintock, 76, died Saturday, August 18, after a long illness. He is an early pioneer of Marcus. Survivors include his second wire and 9 children. Services were in Holy Name with burial in We church cemetery.
The A. I. Swanson residence in Cleghorn was recently purchased by Bill Vine. Vine will take possession in October.
95 Years Ago -1928
About sixty relatives and friends gathered in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Gay yin to bid farewell to Bernard Garvin, who left Monday evening for his home in Toledo Canada.
The enlargement of the Niemann Jewelry shop was completed this week and Mr. Niemann is ready to do business on a much larger scale.
The oil station being erected by the Community Coop Oil Co. is nearing completion and will be ready for use by Oct. 1.
85 Years Ago -1938
With registration set for Tuesday and Friday of this week, classes will open Monday, Sept.5. Coach L. T. Manning opened football practice Monday afternoon.
Clarence Radcliffe passe away at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars Sunday morning after a brief illness.
Trinity Lutheran church of Sioux City was the scene of a lovely wedding Saturday where Marvel Barnes of Sioux City became the bride of Robert Lepper.
Vance Marquis and Bob Hagey pitched a good baseball game for the locals, winning 11-4 over Cherokee.
Ralph Grauer has purchased the feed grinding equipment of Louis Grauer.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Anderson of Primghar were honored Sun day when relatives gathered at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Marti Carey on the Andersons 30th wedding anniversary.
Funeral services were he or Charles Fredrick Hoover Thursday afternoon.
The first football game of the 1943 schedule of Marcus high will be played at 3:30 Friday afternoon at the playground with Orange City.

The purchase of the Gamble Store in Marcus by Earnest P. Haahr was announced this week arid the new owner is now in possession.
Miss Orpha Potter, 69, of Cleghorn met almost instantaneous death about 3:00 Sunday afternoon in an automobile collision at the corner north of Meriden. Seriously injured were Kenneth Ehlers of Cleghorn and Kenneth Ahlgren of Cherokee.
Mrs. Ella Foley, 67, of Glendale, Calif., former Marcus resident for 40 years, passed away Friday of heart failure in the home of her daughter in Des Moines.
70 Years Ago -1953
The new home for the Bob Ames family is about ready for occupancy. It is located at the south end of the street east of the playground.
A thief or thieves broke into the Johnson Hardware sometime Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, stealing only a .22 caliber target pistol and two hunting knives.
Joseph A. Waller, 65, a farmer living near the Fielding store, was killed instantly at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon when the tractor he was driving upset, breaking his neck.
Mr. and Mrs. Matt Brady of Long Beach, Calif., are parents of a daughter born Tuesday, morning, Sept. 1.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wallin are parents of a son, Rodney James, born Saturday, Aug. 29.
A son, Douglas Francis, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Cronin Thursday, Aug. 27.
Jean Lauters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lauters, became the bride of Carl Dreckman son of Mrs. Elizabeth Dreckman of LeMars, at Holy Name Catholic Church Tuesday Aug. 25.

Sharon Kay Lage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Lage, became the bride of Jack Dawson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Dawson of Washta August 30 at Peace Lutheran church.

Mrs. Martin Nelson, 70, a longtime resident of this community, died at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee Aug. 25.
Funeral services for Delmar R. Dunn, 46, of Omaha, a former resident will be Thursday afternoon in the Nelson-Mauer Funeral Home.
Steve Ogren showed the Grand Champion baby beef, a Hereford, at the 32nd annual Marcus Fair.
Mr. and Mrs. Jens Haahr, Lori and Lisa, returned home Aug. 17 from a vacation trip to Nebraska, Washington, Oregon and California.

Steve Smith graduated from Iowa State University at Ames on Thursday, August 16. He received a Bachelor of Music degree, with distinction, in the Honors program.
Sandi Stainer, bride-elect of Ed Sand will be honored with a miscellaneous shower at Peace Lutheran Church Sept. 4.
A farewell coffee will be held for Rev, and Mrs. Kenneth Hilt following morning worship at Faith Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Henry Specht, 83, died August 19 at her home.
Brian Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Miller of rural Marcus, won both Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion with his entries of a cross-bred and an angus at the Marcus Fair.
A morning farewell coffee for Mrs. Harold Hipple of Marcus was held in the home of Mrs. Hillis Carris, Cleghorn, with Mrs. Fred Deichmann and Mrs. Lowell Erickson as Co-hostesses.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Goodrich, Cleghorn, attended the District 9-1 cabinet meeting for Lions International at Storm Lake Aug. 12.

Walt Prilts, custodian of the Meriden School Building. received an estimate of $ 17.000 to repair the entire roof of the Meriden building. He also stated that the Ford tractor used for mowing and snow removal needs replaced.
Jean Denis Joubert ,17, of Orleans, France is an International Cultural Exchange. The Max Mugge family met him at Des Moines and he will spend the next month with them.
Dale Taylor brought his old 1923 Model T Ford to Claude Grey as it needed tuned up. Claude’s talented fingers soon had it purring like a kitten.
40 Years Ago –1983
Lori Lynn Funk of Marshalltown and Steven Jon Mitts of Marcus were married August 6th at Marshalltown. They will be at home at Spencersport, N.Y. where Steve L employed by Eastman Kodak Co. at Rochester, N.Y.,
Lloyd Mdy of Long Beach, CA, Chuck Nielsen of Irvine, CA and Susan Nielsen of Aurora, CO, returned to their homes after spending a week in the Thelma Nielsen home. They helped Bessie Addy celebrate her 100th birthday.
The annual Alamo reunion was held at the Stanley Birch farm at Cleghorn this past weekend. Friends who winter at Alamo. TX joined in the festivities.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Kyle and Sandy Tapper of Marcus are the parents of an 81b. 3oz. daughter, named Jacqueline Marie, born Sunday, August 14. She has a sister and a brother at home.
30 Years Ago – 1993
A fall style show will be held at Holy Name Church Hall. Thursday, September 2, at 7:30 p.m. Clothing from Mr. B’s and the Carriage Shoppe at Sheldon will be modeled with displays from Outlets and Elodie’s.
Scott Inserra of Macon, Georgia and Susan Rosener of Marcus are planning an October 3rd wedding in Marcus Holy Name Church.
Duane and Jo Nafziger and Mark, Sarah and Elizabeth Nafziger attended the wedding of Kris Nafziger and Debra Ryman at Gettysburg, S.D. It was an outdoor wedding at the bride’s sister’s home overlooking the Missouri River.
