110 Years Ago – 1913
Alex Brown, who moved from Tilden Twp. to Paullina this spring is having a 30X32 ft. new modern house built on his farm. He has planted 200 evergreen trees and 100 catalpa trees and many fruit trees on his place.
The Meriden high school baseball team played the married men and defeated them 18-17. Meriden boys will play the Cleghorn and Marcus teams this week.
W.C. Evans, who will graduate from Morningside College in June, was elected to teach in the Marcus High School this fall.
105 Years Ago -1918
Funeral services for Howard McGee, 30, who died in a hospital at Sioux Falls Saturday following an auto accident, were held Wednesday in the Methodist church.
Earl Snyder, who is in the aviation corps, was here Monday to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Snyder.
Mr. and Mrs. John Williams arrived Marcus having driven from Los Angeles, Calif., in their auto.
The public school gave Freda Garison a kitchen shower in the T. Niemann home Monday evening.
95 Years Ago -1928
Lois McDaniel and Wayne Halstrom were injured in an auto accident north of Cleghorn.
Earl Flanagan, Phil Delaney, Margaret Snyder, Margaret Treinen and Leona Bindner will receive diplomas May 4 at Holy Name High School.
Funeral services for Charles Nelson of Pipestone, Minn., were held Friday afternoon in Marcus, having lived his first forty years here.
The bans of marriage were announced in Holy Name church for Esther Piercy to Max Roberts,
Cora Gund, Joe Green, Ivan Addy, Erwin J. Galles, Joe Hey have registered cars at Cherokee the past week.
The Beck and Walker Colored Minstrels will open their 7th season this year in Marcus on the Wixcel lot.
The Marcus baseball team won the invitation cup at Washta defeating Grand Meadow and Kingsley.
85 Years Ago -1938
Mr. and Mrs. Art Baumann are the parents of a son born at home Sunday evening.
George McCandless, commercial teacher at Marcus Public School, and Ruth Arnold are planning to be married.
Holy Name church was the scene of a lovely spring wedding Monday morning when Lorraine Rae became the bride of Arnold F. Willenburg of Sioux City.
Paul Norris was awarded second place in the Interstate spelling contest Friday at Council Bluffs.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Anderson announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Thelma to Mr. Walter L. Calvert of Sioux City.
80 Years Ago – 1943
The Rev. Edmund G. Kestel O.S.B. will celebrate his first solemn Mass in Holy Name church on Sunday morning.
Pvt. Lowell Franck, Pvt. Donald Loomis, Conrad Anderson, S2/c, Jean Kelly, R.N., Cpl. Ray Schnoes and Pvt. Max C. Rasmussen were home last week on furloughs from the armed forces.
Announcement was made recently of the marriage of Betty Bramhall of Oak Park, Ill., to David Peters on January 2.
Mrs. Raymond Schmillen has resigned her position as telephone operator and will leave Friday evening to join her husband at Rome, N.Y.

Mrs. Lowell Nelson entertained a group of little friends at a birthday party in honor of her son, Grant, on his sixth anniversary.
Faye Irvin, who purchased the M. E. Goodrich home in Cleghorn, moved into it this week.
Phyllis Kaiser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Kaiser, who will graduate from Concordia Teachers College has received and accepted her call to teach next fall.
Herb Stowater left Thursday of last week for Sioux Falls, S. D., where he joined a group of navy reserve men and went on to Norfolk, Va. There they boarded a ship for a two-weeks cruise bound for Jamaica.

Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Schlenger are the parents of a son on May 11. He has been named Robert Mark.
A group of neighbors, accompanied by twelve tractors, gathered at the Rassel Bros. farm south of Marcus to finish up the spring plowing.
Pvt. Thomas Hueser of Fort Riley, Kans., spent the weekend in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Hueser.
The service station equipment and stock of Matt’s Conoco Station will be sold at public auction. Col. Bill Collins will do the auctioneering.
65 Years Ago -1958
A miscellaneous shower honoring Marilyn Springer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Springer of Cleghorn, was held May 7 in the parlors of the Cleghorn Presbyterian church.
Sunday, May 11, being Mother’s Day, was also a day of special significance for Mr. and Mrs. George Treinen, who celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Ray Carey purchased the Jerry Pallesen residence property in west Marcus.
Patricia Norris, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. L. L. Norris, in company with her roommate, Mary Kay Donovan of Estherville, sailed on the S.S. Queen Elizabeth, starting a five-week tour of Europe.
In the recent contest sponsored by the Farmers Cooperative Elevator of Marcus the top awards were presented to Robert Carey and Karen Herzberg.
60 Years Ago -1963
Don Geringer and Fred Wilkens spent the weekend at Poplar Bluffs, Mo. and attended the Norman Dorr Carole Thies wedding.
Larry Kohn, son of Mr. and Mrs., Melvin Kohn, was revealed as valedictorian of the class of 1963 at the Community high school’s commencement exercises. Carol Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Miller, earned salutatory honors.
Darrell Nestor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Nestor of rural Marcus, is recuperating from heart surgery in University Hospital in Iowa City.
A beautiful candlelight ceremony uniting JoAnne Richter, daughter of Mrs. Ray Richter, and Wilbur Kaiser, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kaiser, in marriage took place on April 28 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Germantown.
55 Years Ago -1968
Julia Ann Davis of Marcus and Thomas H. Reaman of Yetter, IA. are engaged and planning their wedding.
Bob Swanger, Jr., of Cleghorn was among the 44 people confirmed at Maryhill Visitation church Wednesday evening.
The class of 1918 of Marcus High School will have a 50th anniversary reunion dinner at Speelmon’s in Cherokee May 18.
Rita Winkley of Fort Collins, Cob., bride-elect of Dennis Peavey, was honored at a bridal shower on May 11, in the Peace Lutheran Church parlors.
Father Edmund Kestel observed the silver anniversary of his ordination to the Priesthood of Christ in a Mass of Thanksgiving at Holy Name Church on May 12.
Ray Wankum is among a small detachment of men from Company A of 133rd Infantry which leaves this Thursday morning for Camp Carson, Cob., as a scouting party. The rest of the company will follow later.

Mr. and. Mrs. Clifford Ferrin will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on April 17 with a dance at the Avalon Ballroom in Remsen.
Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Jenness of Pierson announce the engagement of their daughter, Susan, to Ken Prescott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Prescott of Marcus.
Donna Pedersen, bride-elect of Larry Bird, was honored at a miscellaneous shower with a salad bar luncheon at Peace Lutheran Church on May 9th.
Joyce Alesch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Alesch and bride-elect of Larry Keffeler, son of Mrs. Armella Keffeler, was honored at a bridal shower in Holy Name Hall on April 29.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Mrs. Harold Bobolz, 59, nee Margaret Zembsch, died Monday, May 9th, after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at Hartley with burial in Marcus Holy Name Cemetery. Survivors include her husband and 2 sisters.

the Marcus Eaglet Senior Sidelights. All plan further education.
Mary Bird, Kathleen Dunn, Marilyn Ferrin and Valerie Slagter, all of Marcus, were named Roadman Scholars at Morningside College for the 1977-78 year.
40 Years Ago –1983
Everett Johnson, Anita Meyer, Gerald Kintigh and Jim Oswald are featured in the Meriden-Cleghorn Senior Spotlight. All plan further education.
MCHS will have 45 graduates this year. Their motto is,
We may not be able to change the past, but we can help to shape the future”.
Jeffrey W. Bird of Marcus received a Doctor of Juris Degree from the University of South Dakota. He has accepted a position with Arthur Andersen Accounting Firm in Minneapolis as a tax attorney.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Mr. and Mrs. Steve Hueser are the parents of a 7 lb. 13 oz. daughter, born May 3rd. She is named Diane Marie and has a brother at home.
Michael Goth, Tou Kham Lo Van and Tom Boun Lo Van, all of Marcus, graduated from Morningside College at Sioux City.
Lyndal Vozzo, a foreign exchange student from Australia, and Arlyn Wilcox, are featured in the Meriden Cleghorn Senior Spotlight. She will return to Australia and he will attend I.S.U.
30 Years Ago – 1993
M.Sgt. Vance Bruce Marquis will retire from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He, his wife and four children, will make their home at Little Rock, Ark.
Patricia Cronin Pearson, 46, passed away Thursday, May 13th, after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services were held in Marcus Holy Name Church with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include her husband, a son, a daughter, her parents and 4 sisters.
Angie Kuhnes and Jodi Ehrig are pictured in the MMC Free in 93 column. Both plan further schooling.
25 Years Ago – 1998
William J. Cronin,77, of Marcus, died Tuesday, May 5th, at his home. Funeral services were held at Holy Name with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, 4 daughters, 3 brothers and a sister.
Ben Pearson, Shelly Korleski, Kristy Rupp and Joe Daum are featured in ‘Out the gate in ninety eight’, in the MMC Insider. All plan further education.
