120 Years Ago -1903
Lightning struck the barn of E.J. Edmonds and there was nothing left but a shell. The Fire Department, aided by a heavy downpour, kept the fire from spreading to residences.
Simpson Bethel School closed May 29th. Pupils not absent during the term are Florence and Adelbert McGee, Harold and Marian Derthick, Joseph Wirt and Ethel Harvey.
115 Years Ago – 1908
C.I. Bass and son sold 30 head of cattle last Saturday; their average weight was 1684 lbs.
Wixcel Manufacturing will move their plant from Sioux City to Marcus and will occupy the building that F.S. Barnes is building. They will make the hay loader here.
Henry Bush is building a fine new residence on his farm south of Cleghorn.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Workmen digging a basement at Danbury found a case of beer that had been buried their since 1891.
J. Z. Fehi and wife of Washta will visit their old home in Pennsylvania this summer. While there, they will attend the reunion of the Union and Confederate survivors of the battle of Gettysburg.
105 Years Ago -1918
Funeral services were held at the Danish Lutheran Church for Andrew P. Juhl, who passed away April 9 at Fresno, Calif.
Gus Goebel, Roy Imhoff and Pat Meylor have enlisted in the navy and will leave this week for Omaha from where they will be sent to the Great Lakes Training Station.
There will be a public meeting at the Idle Hour Theatre on May 13 for a discussion of the question of school consolidation.
The condition of Thomas Conley, a patient at the Le Mars hospital, is very serious.
85 Years Ago -1938
Larraine Rae became the bride of Arnold F. Willenburg of Remsen Monday in Holy Name Church.
Mrs. Catherine Jobst passed away Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Claude Grey.
Miss Myrtle Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Anderson, was elected president of the Business and Professional Girls’ Club in Sioux City.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Anderson announce the engagement of their daughter, Thelma, to Walter L. Calvert of Sioux City.
Miss Lucille Anderson of Cherokee, formerly of Marcus, has accepted the position of society editor of The Marcus News.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Dorothy Loomer and Duane Springer were united in marriage on May 7.
Norma Jean Mclntire is the winner of the annual poem contest, as announced by Irene Brooks, county school superintendent.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ellis are parents of a son born May 9
Maude Boler of Chicago became the bride of Maurice Prunty of Cleghorn at the Methodist church in Cherokee.
An honor roll board is being constructed for servicemen on the Municipal Building.
75 Years Ago -1948
Robert Miller, 74, a resident of the community of Marcus for nearly 50 years, died suddenly as he was being taken to a nursing home in Cherokee.
Mrs. S. A. Smorawske received word that the body of her son, Corporal John J. Keegan, was being sent home for burial from Iwo Jima, where the Marcus youth sacrificed his life in the war.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert H. Dorr announce the engagement of their daughter, Joyce, to Mr. Donald Glen Cline, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Cline of Cherokee.
70 Years Ago -1953
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Delperdang are the parents of a son born May 5 at Sacred Heart hospital in Le Mars.
Bill McDaniel has accepted a position with the American Telephone and Telegraph Company at Omaha.
Matt Brady has discontinued the operation of Matt’s Conoco Service located in the East Side building and will sell his equipment and stock at public auction.
Joseph Z. Schmilz, custodian of the public school building, signed a contract for the coming year at a ceremony Monday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Art Jenkins were honored at an open house May 18, the occasion being their 45th wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. George Treinen will observe their 50th wedding anniversary May 12, with a church service and open house.
Members of the Cleghorn graduation class will leave Friday night via train for Chicago, where they will spend Saturday on a conducted tour of the city.

Keith Hey, son of Mrs. Gus Willems, received an award for the highest scholastic grades in the senior law class at the annual awards banquet at Creighton University in Omaha.
Larry Nelson and Tom Bortscheler have been chosen to represent this community at Hawkeye Boys State at Des Moines the first, week in June.
Jim Pearson has completed nine months instruction at Universal Trade Schools of Omaha and is now employed as a mechanic at Brinks Rambler at Spencer.
Mr. and Mrs. Durward Rieper of Cleghorn are parents of their first child, a son born on April 27. He has been named Charles Henry.
55 Years Ago -1968
Mrs. Nick Bork has leased the beauty shop location in the McGivern building and plans to be ready for business this Friday. The new business will be known as the Beauty Nook.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Carney are parents of a daughter on April 27. Tracy Lee has four sisters to welcome her home.
Queen Jane Hirschman and King Tim Schlenger reigned at the Marcus prom. Attendants were Susan Carlson, Peggy Wailer, Jon Dorr and Denny Horstman.
50 Years Ago -1973
The Grand Meadow 6th grade class sponsored the movie, “Follow Me Boys” and earned $190.00 for the American Cancer Society.
Corinne Alesch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Aleseh, will graduate from the University of Iowa on May 25 with a bachelor of business administration degree with a major in accounting.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Mr. & Mrs. Duane Wittkop are the parents of son, born April 19 and named Jamie Duane. He has a sister, Kimberlee, at home.
The Classes of ’28, ’29 & ’30 of Marcus Public and Holy Name are planning a 3 day reunion for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 16-18.
Connie Ebert, Jeff Hiller, Ken Meylor and Scot Brady are featured in the Marcus Eaglet.
40 Years Ago –1983
Pauline Witter Boots, 50, died April 21 at Antigo, Wisconsin. She was born and raised in Marcus and graduated here in 1950. Survivors include her husband, 3 sons and her mother.
Peggy Carney of Marcus and David Duncan of Hartley are planning a June 25th wedding in Marcus Grace United Methodist Church.
Randy Seggerman, Steve Holmes and Roger Bohnenkamp are featured in the Marcus Eaglet Spotlight and David Rose is the lone senior in the MeridenCleghorn Senior Spotlight. All four plan further education.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Adam Bentz, 9 year old son of John and Faith Bentz, is pictured with a 61/4 pound walleye he caught on the west side of Storm Lake. He was, fishing for bullheads when he reeled in the catch.
Emilee Nelson, a 7th grader at Marcus Middle school was chosen student of the week”. She is a responsible student, hard worker and well liked.
Kelly Smith and Jim Miller are featured in the MeridenCleghorn Senior Spotlight. Both plan to attend further education.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Tern Koth Carver, 34, lost a 7 year battle with cancer and passed away Tuesday, May 4th at Omaha University Hospital. Survivors include a daughter, her parents, a sister, 3 brothers and her grandmother. Burial was at Storm Lake.
Arnold and Evelyn Weinreich Berglund of Marcus will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, May 16th, hosted by their families.
Amy Cowan and Heather Tentinger are pictured in “Free in 93”. Both plan to attend college.
25 Years Ago – 1998
Betty Hesse was honored at a retirement party May 1st at Hesse’s Chevrolet for 25 years of faithful service.
Mr. and Mrs. Denny Spieler are the parents of a 9 lb. 10 oz. son, born Thursday, April 23. He has a brother, Dylan, at home.
