130 Years Ago -1893
Sixty-five car loads of stock have been shipped from Marcus this month as opposed to 30 cars for the same month last year.
Olson’s new blacksmith shop, replacing the one destroyed by fire last week, is well underway and it will be larger and better than ever.
The city council met to attempt to provide better fire protection for the community. Last week’s fire caused a $6,000 loss and wiped out the accumulations of a lifetime.
125 Years Ago -1898
B.O. Skew is has been appointed postmaster at Fielding and he has chosen Charley Helm as assistant.
Fred E. Hunt, the popular tonsorial artist of Marcus was united in marriage with Martha Phillipson of Meriden.
Ralph Porter of Marcus and Miss Sara Heller of Amherst were united in marriage in the Heller home Wednesday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m.
120 Years Ago -1903
W.E. Welley delivered 50 head of hogs and 30 fine fat steers to E.J. Edmonds. He received $2,742 for the lot.
The incorporation of the Fielding Telephone Company is found in this News issue. The authorized capital stock is $5,000 divided into shares of $10 each. It will do general telephone business.
The city dads purchased 300 feet of hose to be used in connection with the water works in case of fire.
115 Years Ago – 1908
Bert H. Titcomb and Miss Hilda A. Turner were quietly married in the Christian parsonage by Rev. Coonradt. Bert plays the harp in the Collins orchestra and Hilda helps her father E. Turner in his store. They departed on a wedding trip to Minnesota and will be at home in Marcus after April 15.
Marcus shipped out 783 cars of stock in 1907 and 577 car loads were shipped in.
Marcus has two skating rinks – one in the Opera House and one in the old school building. The Sullivan Harp Orchestra furnished music at the Opera House while the Christian Church orchestra was at the old school rink.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Howard Lutes will receive $1,100 as superintendent of Marcus Public school. Alta Ferguson will be principal and May Pennington will teach grammar. Harriet Fry will be First Intermediate teacher, Marie Fry will be Second Intermediate and May Freeman will have Primary.
Dr. A. C. Knox and Dr. H.S. Evans have rented the four rooms in the Fry and Bass block and will move next week to their new location.
Farmers in large numbers attended the opening of Johnson, Peltz and Johnson, the implement dealers, last Friday and Saturday.
105 Years Ago -1918
J.H. Knox has accepted a position with the Fullerton Lumber Co. at Wakefield, Nebr.
The Collins & Treinen Auto Co. advertise a Studebaker “35”, six passenger with electric starter and lights for $1,335.
Three Marcus barbers by mutual agreement have decided to raise the price of shaves from 15¢ to 20¢. The new price is to take effect the first of April.
95 Years Ago -1928
Mark Bancroft won first prize with his Rhode Island Red Cockerel at a Sioux City poultry show.
Esther Show will return to her teaching job at Marcus public school after attending her father’s funeral at Wellman.
Mrs. Margaret Richardson passed away Tuesday after an illness of two weeks.
Ruby Holmes and Edith Garvin are patients in the Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars following appendectoies.
85 Years Ago -1938
Dr. Loren Collins, who has been studying surgery in Vienna, Austria, departed from Hungary shortly before Hitler’s march through Vienna.
Mr. and Mrs. Peter L. Miller were joined by twelve of their thirteen children to help them celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary.
J.W. Mitchell defeated H.C. Brooks for mayor in an exciting election at Cleghorn.
W.W. Bass and Sons have rented the W.E. Wiley farm one mile south of Marcus and will operate it as a livestock feeding farm.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Donna Mae Pearson and Eric Carlson were united in marriage at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, in the Carmel Lutheran Church.
Edgar Roseen, S2/c is spending a 15 day leave in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Roseen. He is stationed at Corpus Christi.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wankum are the parents of a son born Friday, March 26.
75 Years Ago -1948
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Garvin have purchased a Gamble house and will put it on the lot in south Marcus, north of the Mark Garvin home. Their son, Merlin, is farming the farm.
Earl’s Tavern Bowlers set a new game record – they scored 1028 points – bowlers were Herb Stowater, 205; Junior Franck, 224; Leon Ebert, 209; Junior Slagter, 215; and Jerry Rae, 175.
E.E. Evans plans to begin construction on a 40 x 80 foot quonset type building north of the Evans Motor Co. It will face north and will house Massey Harris farm equipment.
The Marcus community was shocked Thursday evevning to learn of the death of Jesse Nield, one of the early pioneers of this community.
Louis Jorgesen has bought the plumbing and heating equipment of the Marcus Hardware.
70 Years Ago -1953
Earl Rae arrived home with his release from active duty in the Marine Corps. He served 21 months of active duty at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hagenbucher are the parents of their fourth daughter. Lora Gayle arrived March 15 and weighed 9 lbs. 3 oz.
Dr. M.F. Joynt and Wylie Satterlee shared their recent trip to Mexico with the Marcus Rotary Club. Maureen Flanagan, Betty Hohbach, Charles Roberson and Irvin Deichmann, seniors from the two schools, were guests.
65 Years Ago -1958
Five Easter hams and $25 in “Marcus Money” are up for grabs in the weekly Saturday drawing.
Former Marcusite, Alice Williams Moyer, 39, of San Fernando, Calif., died March 20 at Van Nuys, Calif. She is survived by her husband, three brothers and a sister.
Linda Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nelson of Marcus, is doing well as a member of the Iowa Wesleyan women’s basketball team.
Howard Fitzgerald, superintendent of Marcus Public schools the past two years, tendered his resignation to the board of directors. The board accepted it.
60 Years Ago -1963
Charles Brown, 86, a former Marcus area farmer, died at Worthington, Minn. He is survived by his second wife, five sons, and two daughters. Burial was in Marcus-Amherst cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Busch, Jr. are the parents of a 7 lb. 13 oz. daughter, Laura Beth, born Sunday, March 17.
The Mt. Pleasant Guild sponsored a Father-Son Fellowship March 12. Ralph Gibson gave a toast to the sons and David Wailer to the fathers. Bernie Saggau of Cherokee was the featured speaker.
Marlin “Pete” Erickson will sell their eight room modern house at Public Auction Friday, March 29. The residence is at 209 Radcliffe Street, Marcus.
55 Years Ago -1968
Major and Mrs. Charles Rosburg, Karen, Steven, Julie and Kristi are visiting Mrs. Rosburg’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Mayer and with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Rosburg at Vermillion, South Dakota. Charles has just returned from a year in Vietnam.
Mr. and Mrs. LuVern Nelson are the parents of a 7 lb. 5 oz. daughter, Karen Alice, born Wednesday, march 13. She has a brother and a sister.
50 Years Ago -1973
Mr. and Mrs. Milton Wurth are the parents of a 9 lb. 4 oz. son, named Kenneth John, born Wednesday, March 28. He has two brothers, Andrew and Dennis.
Former Marcusite, JoAnne Busch, and Alan Jenness of Marcus are planning an October wedding. JoAnne is employed at Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company and Alan is attending W.I.T. in Sioux City.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Local golfer, Earl Flanagan, scored a hole-in-one at a course in southern California, around San Diego. It was on the 7th hole, 194 yards long and he used a 4 iron. It has been confirmed by Mrs. Paul Flanagan, Erv Anderson and others.
Ann Schwarz, formerly of Marcus and Norman Dean Spooner of Spencer are planning a June 24th wedding.
40 Years Ago –1983
Mr. and Mrs. David Stodden of Marcus are the parents of an 8 lb. 1 oz. daughter, Barbara Joan, born Friday, March 18. She has two brothers to welcome her home.
Jeff Frederick and Mary Rose are featured in the M-C Senior Spotlight.
35 Years Ago – 1988
The Cleghorn Centennial Committee will sponsor a Prime Rib dinner April 15 in the Cleghorn gym. All proceeds will go to the Centennial Fund. Maxine’s of Holstein will cater the meal.
Dennis Specht of Farmer’s Coop Elevator, Marcus recently completed comprehensive training in the management of a high quality feed mill operation.
30 Years Ago – 1993
eo and Marie French of Meriden will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, April 10. It will be hosted by their children and will be held in the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church basement.
The seniors of Iowa Hawkeyes Basketball team will be in Marcus April 18 to play a game vs. members of the MMC faculty and area college seniors.
